Queiroz: Reds style a winner

WINNING COMBINATION: Carlos Queiroz and Sir Alex Ferguson
CARLOS Queiroz reckons Manchester United did football a favour by winning the Premier League title last term.

After a four-year drought, the Red Devils roared to their 16th championship trophy on the back of some scintillating free-flowing tactics.

With a host of player of the year awards, Cristiano Ronaldo was undoubtedly United's star man.

But with Wayne Rooney, Paul Scholes, Ryan Giggs and Louis Saha playing major supporting roles at various points of the season, no-one could have complained about the entertainment value at Old Trafford.

United's approach under Sir Alex Ferguson was in marked contrast to the perceived safety-first tactics employed by Jose Mourinho at Chelsea and Rafael Benitez at Liverpool.

And, without mentioning his club's major rivals by name, Queiroz feels in an age where football must compete with all major entertainment industries in a bid to attract supporters, it is fitting United finished last season top of the pile.

"The Manchester United culture is to win by playing great, creative football," said Ferguson's assistant.

"It is about winning and entertaining. It has always been like that.

"Sometimes, with so much competition from all the other sports and things like TV, football needs to be innovative to keep the title of the best sporting entertainment.

"For some time now, the game has moved in one direction. The systems and strategies and the general way teams approached the game had become so defensive and cautious.

Important

"That is why it was so important, not just for Manchester United but for the game as a whole, that we won the championship.

"We proved it is possible to win trophies with an attacking style of football."

Queiroz's comments will be greeted with a wry smile by the body of United fans who felt the former Real Madrid coach was behind the decision to abandon the club's traditional all-action 4-4-2 formation a couple of years ago.

Yet Queiroz's stock has risen markedly over the past 12 months.

A key figure in Cristiano Ronaldo's decision to remain with the club following the post-World Cup attacks on the brilliant winger, Queiroz has become a father figure to the 22-year-old.

He was also trusted with the task of travelling to Portugal with chief executive David Gill for the lightning May raid that ended with the capture of highly-rated young duo Anderson and Nani.

Clearly, Ferguson is an admirer of Queiroz's coaching abilities and feels comfortable having him around. It is a respect which is mutual.

"The manager is a great believer in playing an entertaining brand of football," observed Queiroz.

"Of course, we need to have different approaches against teams like Bayern Munich, Real Madrid and Juventus. At times we have to be efficient.

"But mainly, Manchester United needs to play with fantasy, imagination and creativity.

"We need to produce attacking football and be sure when we have the trophies in our hands, it is because we deserve it."

Just three games into his side's pre-season programme, Ferguson already needs to fiddle about with his plans for the Premier League opener against Reading on August 12.

The loss of Paul Scholes for up to a month with a knee injury is a blow, especially as Owen Hargreaves is yet to play any major part in training, let alone play a match on United's current Far East tour.

With Anderson not due to train with his new team-mates until they return to England at the weekend, unless Hargreaves' condition suddenly improves over the next fortnight, Ferguson may find himself turning to the trusted talents of long-serving duo Darren Fletcher and John O'Shea as he looks for someone to partner Michael Carrick against the Royals.

What do you make of Queiroz' comments? Have your say.

we definately did win with style and makes football interesting! football can be so boring when you get 2 boring teams like chelsea v liverpool who just want to defend. United on the other hand are so exciting.

Right on, Carlos. We Americans are slowly getting drawn in to watch the Premier League matches. We need a legendary, star-filled team like Man United to understand what real football is all about and why it's the most popular sport in the world. Keep the big four going! Frankly, it's quality sport, rather than Beckham that will turn the tide. In my little part of the world, it is growing.

Great ,attacking football throughout the season despite injuries, and Chelski moaned about theirs?Just check how many times Terry and co won 1-0,or by odd goal last season ,in comparison to Uniteds victories!

The current situation clearly shows that despite spending millions, we still need the likes of Fletcher and O'Shea in the squad.

Clearly, CQ and some others have forgotten about that awful tripe UTD served up in the FA Cup. Yes, we were brilliant in the league, lucky in europe but that FA Cup final performance was the worst I've seen as UTD supporter and that includes the loss against Everton.

CQ needs to disguise his feelin's and keep the players feet on the ground akin to the Great Keano at Sunderland. You're only as good as your last game and UTD last competitive performance was a stinker.
Loads of room for improvement this year....

The FA Cup final admittedly was dire ,both teams looked jaded ,and of course it could have gone either way .Chelsea sneaked it.However how many other games were like that .Wasnt the Replay at Reading an exciting tie ,Home FA cup v Pompey wasnt a bad match .
So no team has 100% scintillating football ,but the good football certainly outweighed the bad!

Red Family Man, they are much maligned but they will both play a part in the coming season. I have no problem with this, i just hope that JOS is not playing his part in central midfield. Either full back or up front, they're the only positions he can play!

Oh or in goals obviously!!

dboy, eire

I suppose everything you do in life is as flawless as you seem to expect Man Utd to be is it??

'Both teams were tired in the FA Cup Final'!!!!!

Don't talk nonsense fella, there was no excuse for that contrived heap of utter dross in the most famous domestic cup in the world.

These prima donnas should be having a long, hard look at emselves after such an inept, gutless display.

They only play when they fancy it and that is simply not good enough.

Carlos sure says a lot these days, who could blame him though..... As a United fan, u'd want to agree with him entirely, but as a football fan, even I have to say that the best attacking football in the last few years was that unbeatable Arsenal side - at times the football they played was unbelievable, hence this article only mentions Rafa and Jose when referring to those playing negative style football. Anyway, at the moment though, we are playin some lovely football, but also have fantastic defensive ability.

i going to buy the DVD : ¨Chelsea:The Mourinho Years¨ and send it to my neighbor that have 7 kids . It the best way to send them all to bed at the same time.

That is a harsh view of the season dboy... I think it undermines the achievement. The lads deserve a bit more acknowledgement than a verdict based on one game.

birdy much maligned i cant recall any criticism of oshea when he has played in defence. most genuine fans are happy for him as cover for all of the defensive positions. you will find very few fans who will accept that he is even adequate in midfield. and as for the other guy you already know my position on him HE IS SIMPLY NOT GOOD ENOUGH.

It takes two teams for a decent game of football. And when you have a team as expensively assembled as Chavski who are determined to close down space and avoid defeat at all costs, is it any wonder the FA Cup Final was a fairly drab affair?

Looking at United's season as a whole, we played the best football of any team in the league, bar none. Shame on you fans who are sniping about a single game of football at the end of a long hard season.

United entertained me as much last season as they have done in any season I've followed over the last quarter of a century. But still people moan. Go figure.

Denis Law back heel I think you should look closer to home (obviously not your own home as it is no doubt overlooked by our magnificent stadium) if you are talking about not getting your money's worth. You lot are dire.

By your comments there Bobbydazzler, I take it you mean Darren Fletcher! I wonder what the midfielders of France, Roma, Liverpool and Arsenal who he outplayed would think of your suggestion that he is not good enough? He has showed more commitment to United than so-called fans favourites Gabby Heinze and Ruud van Nistelrooy!

Oh my Buddha, gals & guys, we'vw sighed Owen Hargreaves, Nani, Anderson, with Tevez to come, and yer mincing around complaining about JOS, the CAT, top goals to shots ratio in the league, earin' a fair wack. Shame on you!

John O'Shea played in 32 league games last season - more than Scholes, Vidic, Heinze, Saha, Neville etc. Fletch played in 23 league games. In case some of the JOS / DF bashers haven't noticed, we won the league - they must be doing something right, you can't win the Premier League title with 9 men. Give them a break, and the credit they thoroughly deserve.
