Lionel Messi's sublime chip was the highlight of a victory capped by Juan Roman Riquelme's penalty as Alfio Basile's side outgunned the Mexicans to book their place in Sunday's showpiece encounter at the Jose Pachencho Romero stadium in Maracaibo.
Argentina looked the most threatening in the early stages but it was Mexico who had the first clear chance when Juan Carlos Cacho took advantage of a defensive mistake but fired over the crossbar.
Javier Zanetti responded for the South Americans but the Internazionale midfielder shot weakly after creating an opening for himself, while West Ham striker Tevez went close minutes later after escaping the attentions of two defenders.
Mexico almost took the lead in the 35th minute when Andres Guardado hit the right-hand post before Tevez shot straight at keeper Oswaldo Sanchez after combining well with Riquelme.
Deadlock
Argentina broke the deadlock on the stroke of half-time, however, as Riquelme floated a free-kick into the box and United defender Heinze acrobatically volleyed home at the back post.
Mexico coach Hugo Sanchez brought on Omar Bravo and Alberto Medina during the interval in search of an equaliser and they very nearly found it 10 minutes into the second period but Nery Castillo was unlucky to see his shot come back off the bar.
And it took a moment of magic from the masterful Messi on 61 minutes to finally break Mexico's spirit as the Barcelona star collected Tevez's pass on the right-hand side of the area and produced a majestic chip over a floundering Sanchez.
It got worse for the Central Americans four minutes later as Rafael Marquez obstructed Tevez in the box and Riquelme produced an audacious chip from the resulting penalty to put the result beyond doubt.
Substitute Rodrigo Palacio fired over when well placed and Messi saw an effort drift wide of the left-hand post late on as Argentina threatened a fourth and they will now bid for a record 15th title against arch-rivals Brazil.
Mexico, on the other hand, will contest a third-place play-off with Uruguay.
What do you think? Have your say.

So, it's squeaky bum time again, from now until August 31st.

I'm trying hard not to get stressed by the Tevez thing. Obviously the PL and WHU know exactly the position they've managed to get themselves in and so they have to tread very carefully but there is no way on earth Tevez will ever play for WHU again and it will be sorted before the season starts.
On Rossi, I think United fans are overwhelmingly in favour of him being given his chance at OT. I personally think Smith will go and Rooney will be number one choice with Tevez and Saha competing for the role as his partner (not suggesting it will always be 442 but for simplicity, go with me here). If one of those three gets injured the only back-ups will be Rossi and Ole, so I think Guissepe will stay.
However, if he asks for a move and SAF thinks that would be the best thing for the player and United, who are we to argue?

I'm cock-a-hoop about the coming season but surely EVERYONE'S head is wrecked by the Tevez fiasco?
As for Rossi, I still hope that he will play for us next season but his agent has been making some very negative noises and I would be gutted if he was sold, no matter what the reasons. He is the reserve player I've been most excited about since a certain David Beckham excelled out on loan. And there's nothing sweeter than a future star coming up through the ranks.
As for Heinze, picture him celebrating a goal in front of the Kop, in a Liverpool shirt. Makes you sick to the bottom of your stomach, doesn't it? If it doesn't, well it should do.
Sorry if all this sounds a bit negative for you, I'm just saying it how I see it.
And don't forget this is entirely hypothetical. If we seal the deal for Tevez before August 31st and Rossi and Heinze stay as United players (or Gabby signs for ANYONE but the dippers) then I'm happy as a dog with two tails!
Frank Old Trafford (12/07/2007 at 14:57)
Gaby at the dippers? The only thing he'll be doing at Anfield is scoring goals for us! He's not stupid!!
Mick, Dublin (12/07/2007 at 15:33)
As for Heinze, he was quoted today as saying "The interest in me from important teams such us Liverpool, Juventus and Real Madrid makes me feel proud." To be fair, he went on to say he is happy at United but if he is even considering joining the dippers it's enough to make the blood boil. A certain G Neville will have harsh words with him after that quote, that's for sure!
And, before I get a rep as the MEN forum misery-guts, I just want to say that the issues around Tevez, Rossi and Heinze are the ONLY things worrying me right now. And they could all be solved in the next few weeks and I'll be happier than Larry.
Jaysus, you know times have changed when I'm getting accused of negativity!

I am not buying newspapers too. Especially the red tops and no SKYSPORTS news for me.
This is too much to bear,it is stressing me out.

On Heinze, I can NOT see Fergie agreeing to sell him to Liverpool. Quite apart from how much he hates them, why would he sell a quality player like that to one of our closest (albeit not that close in fairness!) rivals? Ain't gonna happen.
On Tevez, I would describe myself as anxious for it to be sorted out because it's such an exciting prospect for us, while being calm in the knowledge that Gill, Watkins and Fergie know what they are doing and will get it done.
I'm less sure about the Rossi situation but, for the reasons given earlier, am hopeful he will stay.

If it's true Tevez is on his way to OT next Tuesday, but will you know that before Aug 31st?
