The Reds are confident of wrapping up a deal for the player over the next fortnight, but the question of who actually owns the 23-year-old Argentinian ace could yet be the subject of a legal tussle.
The economic rights to the player are held by London-based company Media Sports Investment (MSI), but Tevez's registration until 2010 is owned by West Ham as part of the deal which took him to Upton Park from Brazilian club Corinthians. MSI, headed by Iranian businessman Kia Joorabchian, are understood to have lined up the move to United which it is hoped will be concluded once Argentina's involvement in the Copa America ends.
There is still some doubt over the carve-up of the transfer fee, with uncertainty over how much MSI and West Ham will get - and any money which goes to MSI could prove that the Hammers were still in breach of Premier League rules when they fielded him in the closing stages of last season.
West Ham were fined £5.5m last season for breaking those rules when they signed Tevez and his fellow Argentine Javier Mascherano.
To escape more severe punishment they had to assure the ruling body that the offending part of the contracts of Tevez and Mascherano - which stated that their contracts were joint owned by MSI - had been removed.
The Hammers did not do that to the satisfaction of other relegation-threatened clubs, but the Premier League was sated enough to allow Tevez's registration to stand.
Agreement
If West Ham allow MSI to receive some or all of the fee, it is tantamount to an acknowledgement that they did NOT terminate their agreement with MSI, and is sure to bring fresh demands for action from Sheffield United, who were relegated after Tevez was allowed to play on and inspired West Ham to escape relegation.
The Blades will take the next stage of their appeal against their relegation to the High Court on July 13.
Tevez himself says he will not sort out his future until after the Copa America but is believed to favour a move to Old Trafford.
"Signing Tevez would be like getting Mark Hughes back - but with more mobility," says Clayton Blackmore, a former colleague of "Sparky" for both club and country.
"Tevez is a fantastic player - he showed that last season when he single-handedly kept West Ham in the Premiership.
"I have heard some Argentinians say he is better than Diego Maradona, but he also works very hard when he doesn't have the ball.
"If you watched him for West Ham towards the end of the season, as soon as they lost the ball he would run back 30 or 40 yards to put pressure on the opposition, which makes things much easier for his defenders and midfielders."
UNITED have been invited to play a fourth friendly on their pre-season tour of Asia against Chinese side Guangzhou Pharmaceutical FC on July 27 at the 80,000-seater Guangdong Olympic Stadium in Guangzhou.

Surely the powers that be would have concluded their investigation when they arrived at the decision to fine Westham 5 milion pounds?
How can there be any doubt left now as they've looked into it, presumably sorted it to their own satisfaction and ceratinly should have left the path crystal clear as to any further dealings regarding this player.
This should have all been done whilst they had the chance to look at all apects of the original deal.
This mess needs sorting out once and for all no matter how embarrassing it is to the authorities or clubs concerned.
Someone clearly did not do their job properly or this wouldn't be raising its ugly head again?

Tevez and Rooney are too much alike to suit each other on the field for my liking.

I don't think that this is a team of galacticos yet. As arrogant as some young players can be, I don't think they always match the more "grown-up" superstars. Nani and Anderson are young and haven't sounded arrogant to me. I imagine that Fergie has had a think about their character. Tevez has a great work ethic and attitude and doesn't sound like a player who is a troublemaker. I think the team will be quite manageable--Ronaldo will remain my concern.

Eitherway if we don't sign him we will need someone else - and if we do the FA should be signing off that the transfer has been completed correctly so that there is no chance of it coming back to bit us as the season progresses. I wish they would investigate Chelsea's transfers and dealings as much as they pay attention to ours!
PS: Birdy & Mick what part of Ireland (& Dublin) are you lads from?

All I can say is if Manchester wants to sign the player and the player wants to come to us (he has already said he wants to come to United and was once seen going for a press interview in a UNITED shirt). The deal is good as done. Surely the intricacies of the deal can be ironed out between Kia J and WHU and these has got nothing to do with United.
All United needs to do is to make sure, they buy the rights/registration outright from whoever owns the player registration/rights.

1. Mascherano is on a long time loan with an option to buy at the end.
2. Tevez - quality player, people saying too much like Rooney. Give me a break, who wouldn't want two Rooneys!
3. Galacticos - People always forget that temperement and personality are 2 of the most important things that the scouts look for. I think the comments from Nani and Anderson have both been pretty humble and positive so far. Of course, they sometimes get it wrong and it is difficult to keep someone on £100k a week humble!
4. Lastly, I am fairly confident that we will only be signing a deal for Tevez if it is either a long term loan or if we take ownership, we have all of the rights. Personally I think that David Gill has done a pretty good job so far, so not too worried.
Can't wait for next season

PS My theory is that Tevez is being bought as a defender; someone has to track back when Nani and Ronaldo play.
