GABRIEL Heinze is poised to leave Manchester United as Real Madrid prepare a £6m bid to tempt him to the Bernabeu.
The Argentinian ace has vowed not to discuss his future with anyone until after his country’s involvement in the Copa America ends, but has let friends know he is unhappy at playing second fiddle to Patrice Evra for much of last season.
And that could mean Mikael Silvestre’s Old Trafford career is extended by another season despite strong interest from both Bordeaux and top French club Lyon.
The Reds are also said to be considering an £8m bid from Everton for Alan Smith and Kieran Richardson as they look to recoup some of the initial £40m outlay for Owen Hargreaves, Nani and Anderson.
Option
Heinze’s injury troubles and his long absence on international duty – he will miss United’s pre-season tour of the Far East should Argentina progress in the Copa America – have not done him any favours, despite being a fans’ favourite.
And United legend Pat Crerand believes that a move away from Old Trafford may be the best option for the player.
“I think there is a strong possibility Gabby will go,” he said.
“That would be disappointing for the supporters and for the club but since Patrice came in he has been magnificent, and Gabby must be thinking he won’t play as often as he would like.
“Then you see that Roberto Carlos has left Real Madrid – so they are desperate for a left-back.
“And if you are not in the team like Gabby, you are not happy. A manager would also be angry with any player who is happy sitting on the bench.”
But Crerand feels Heinze will get games if he should stays, saying: “There are very few players at this club who are certain of their place every week – maybe three or four.
Injuries
“Look at the players United have used over the years who are not first choices but have ended up playing 25 games a season because of injuries, resting players and so on.”
Silvestre comes into that category. After starting the season, he broke a metatarsal in September, lost his place as Evra and Nemanja Vidic came into their own, and then broke his collarbone in April to ensure a miserable end to the season.
That ensured he only played 14 league games last season.
His absence from the recently-released photograph of the United squad sporting the new-look kit sparked fresh speculation that he was on the move this summer.
The explanation for that one is simple as the photo was taken in April, and Silvestre was absent from training due to his injury – the picture also features Phil Marsh, who has since left the club.
But former team-mate Laurent Blanc is keen to take the French international defender to Bordeaux, while Lyon are also interested in a player who has now been at Old Trafford for eight years.
United players return for pre-season training tomorrow without Heinze and new signing Anderson, who is also on Copa America duty with his Brazilian team-mates.
In fact, Anderson could miss United’s pre-season tour if Brazil reach the final, which is on July 15, the day after the Reds fly out to the Far East.
What do you think? Have your say.

Gaby looked well off the pace last season, which exposed his tendancy to wander out of position but look at the season before: no-one played with more commitment or fire and I lost count of the times his last minute tackles saved United.
With the way Utd are stretching the play now full back is one of the most crucial areas on the pitch and I agree they need more top quality cover there. I just don't think Gaby will be happy to sit on the bench - especially if there's a chance of him taking Roberto Carlos's shirt at Real.
As for the scousers... no way.

Just a point - a read an interview with Anderson and he claimed his best (or possibly favourite) position is "left back, bursting forward with the ball like Roberto Carlos." I've no idea where I am going with this point, but it is nice to share knowledge with my red chums!

I think the offer for Smith and KR is fair and should be accepted, 2m for a fringe player like KR is good business, we should also sell Sly and get somebody like Baines in as cover for Evra - he is young and still learning but would be a good prospect for the future.

Madrid have just bought Chivu and show no interest in Gaby.
Barcelona want Milito, if not then Andrade, and third choice is Gaby.
Gaby has said that he will not comment on his future until after the Copa america.
He also said that he is very happy at united!
6 million for a top international defnder, having a laff!
Yes indeed everything points to Gaby's exit and that every single word of this article is gospel!
8 million quid for 2 England internationals? Daylight robbery!

the prices are rediculous! yes richardson is rubbish but he is english and left footed and therefore should fetch 6m himself! gabby a proven international defender should be no less than 10m and smithy 6m as dont forget he is an england international! or do these things only count when its united buying!

Two very good reasons why we pulled out of (or perhaps were never interested in?) any deal for Gareth Bale.

A few things:
Because Gabby can buy out his contract, that sets a limit to what United can get. I'm guessing the buy-out is around £5-6M, as those are the figures floating around and would translate into £50k-£60K per week. He's a great character, so it's sad if he goes but I don't think it will really impact us greatly, unless Evra breaks something. Sly can cover, and presumably one or more of the young lads will also get some experience. I don't think United were really looking at Bale, in hindsight. I really expect gabby to go and Fergie must know that. He's Argie's first choice LB, he'd be foolish to play reserve when he could hold down a spot at other top clubs.
We're all agreed that Sly is not good at CB but he is definitely solid enough at LB; others have already pointed out his attributes. I was always happy with him when he played LB, though certainly I'd take Evra over him, though not Gabby on his form last season.
United really do sell their players cheap; god only knows why, but I assume they like to just clear the decks quickly. If we sell Smithy then it can't just be to balance the books, as the article suggests. We'd just be too short of experienced cover. If Smudge goes then it's got to mean United will bring in someone else.
