And one of his major tasks will be pruning a top heavy first team squad.
While there is still room for a proven scorer, Sir Alex finds he has a surplus of requirements in other areas.
Alan Smith, Guiseppe Rossi, Gabriel Heinze and Keiran Richardson have all been linked with moves away from Old Trafford.
Richardson loves being a United player but his performances at the UEFA Under-21 Championship didn't improve his case for the season ahead.
United supporters would be sad to see Smith, Rossi and Heinze leave but they're unlikely to be guaranteed places in the starting line-up.
A switch to Spain or Italy looks likely for Heinze while Smith must decide whether he's content to resume his shadow role at Old Trafford or accept first team football elsewhere in the Premiership.
And since clinching their ninth Premiership title, United have welcomed back a handful of players, including Rossi, from loan spells in England and Europe.
Phil Bardsley, Gerard Pique, Jonny Evans, Chris Eagles, Dong Fangzhou and Ben Foster are all available to Sir Alex again, albeit Foster is sidelined until next year with knee ligament problems.
And despite Rio Ferdinand's insistence that United are chasing a quadruple next term, five of them will remain fringe players.
Salford-born Bardsley has been interesting Everton after Aston Villa boss Martin O'Neill opted not to pursue any interest while ex-Barcelona prospect Pique could return to La Liga with Real Zaragoza.
Interest
The signings of Nani and Anderson suggest Eagles will struggle to even make the substitutes bench and he could be heading for another loan spell.
United's third close season capture, Owen Hargreaves, could make his debut in the club's opening Asian friendly against Urawa Red Diamonds in Toyko on July 17.
Anderson, likely to be involved in Brazil's Copa American defence until July 15, and Nani may not feature at all until the home season curtain raiser against Inter Milan on August 1.
David Trezequet is one world class striker definitely not heading to Old Trafford. But the French international claims the Reds were interested.
The former Monaco forward recently signed a new contract with Juventus but says United, Liverpool and Barcelona were all keen on him.
"As soon as Juve showed their desire to keep me I accepted immediately," he says.
What do you think? Have your say.

Is this the same Fergie who was bemoaning his depleated squad after the FA Cup final. Sounds more to me like the 'revolving door' policy in practice.

He's not up to it - get rid.

Sell Rossi - ridiculous. No other word for it. He's never gotten a chance with us. Whatever people's opinions on Richardson or Fletcher may be, its undeniable that, being generous, theyve not been great, and they've had about 150 games between them to try to prove themselves. To sell Rossi, considerig his record everywhere he's been, without giving him at least a season, would be crazy.
Sell Dong - absolutley. He has as much chance of making it at Utd as I do

We've signed just signed three new players. We have Phil Bardsley, Gerard Pique, Jonny Evans, Chris Eagles and Guiseppe Rossi all returning to the club from loan spells. Are you saying that NOBODY should leave to make way?

I'd consider loaning Keano Evans to gain experience, giving Rossi and Pique their chance in the first team.
Out:
Heinze (needs to be first choice which Evra is now), Richardsson (not United class, could blossom with regular first team action), Smith (big heart but limited ability, better off being first choice at clubs from 5th to 10th place). Loan Eagles to a PL club or a top Championship side that plays a passing style.

But keep Rossi, Dong, Eagles, Pique, Lee for the reserves team.
Eagles could perform better than Fletcher, Rossi & Dong better than Smith, Pique tougher than Silvestre, Kieran Lee promises more than Richardson.
Come on SAF, don't waste the true talent or sell them cheaply.

Evans played left back in his debut for Northern Ireland. They beat Spain 3-2, so I would say he came out of it quite okay. ;-)
According to manutdzone.com he can actually play all across the defence, so I think he'll be given some appearances on the sides in the beginning.

Evans has played 5/6 matches for Norn Iron at left back and played a stormer each match - beating spain and sweden in euro qualifiers!
Think the guy is becoming a really solid defender!

That is exactly 3 players per position in our 1st team squad for next season. Now if your going to tell me that 33 players isn't "top-heavy" then you really have lost it. The pruning will obviously involve some of the younger, less established players going out again on loan while 2 or 3 players will also leave. Heinze is hinting at a move, Smith isn't good enough as is Richardson and these are the players most likely to leave. Nobody really wants Heinze to go (especially SAF) but he seems to have made up his mind. Smith and Richardson won't be missed as they have failed to improve the team and while Smith could well be replaced with a better striker (McCarthy, Anelka, Torres) I think Richardson's replacement already signed when Nani came to OT. This to me just makes sense as to keep everyone here for next season wouldn't be possible. But to keep calling this " United's famous Revolving-door Policy" just doesn't make sense. Arsenal have that policy as they have continued to weaken their squad every season since 2004 because of the debt their new stadium has put on them but United have strengthened whilst expanding OT so I doubt if you can say we operate like Arsenal. I'm also not looking to have a raging debate again with you as this just goes nowhere but you've got to back up what you post with facts and I'm sorry to tell you but you don't. I'll happily apologise to you if it's proven that I'm wrong. Support the Team and Live the Dream.....

Rossi wont make the grade at Utd, so £6 million here is a bonus.
Richardson has not developed as a player and anything in the region of £4 million for him has to be taken.
Silvestre is surplos to requirements, so he should fetch about £3 million.
Heinze was shiocking last season and doesnt look the player he was, if someone wants to pay £6 million for him, then let him leave.
eagles has been on the scene for a while and will never make the first team, he should fetch about £1 million.
If we swap Pique for Gudjohnsen then thats a good deal, as we need a forward more than another defender.
I would even consider Michael own for £9 million, especially if we get £6 million from Rossi.

If SAF brings Evans back to OT I hope he intends to play him. It would be a waste taking him from Sunderland where he is guaranteed first team football under Keane.
