One weaving run from half-way that rolled back the years would have done it but for the intervention of Petr Cech's giant hands.
But the 0-0 draw with the Czech Republic gave Giggs, a veteran of 64 caps, hope that the young team he has been captaining can one day make an impact.
The United ace said: "This performance was the benchmark for the side.
"The defence didn't give them a kick, the midfield worked really hard and everybody did their bit. From Wayne Hennessey right through to Craig Bellamy, it was a fine team performance.
"That shows what this side can do; you saw it out there against one of the world's best teams, we made the Czechs look very ordinary at times and that is what we are capable of doing."
He added: "Craig is the new captain now and I wish him all the best. There is not a better choice and I hope he enjoys it. He is a very proud Welshman and I am sure he will make a very good captain.
"In the two games he was captain earlier in the season when I was injured, I think it improved his performance and that will continue in the future because he is a leader both on and off the pitch.
"And yes, I could have won it for us. I should really have scored, I had done all the hard stuff getting from halfway to the box but I know that I gave Petr Cech too much of a chance.
"I should have put it into the top corner but the effort was more central and he got a hand on it. It would have been a great way to go out."
Giggs received a standing ovation as he left the Cardiff stage, and said: "It has been an emotional week that was rounded off with the reception I got when I came off, and I'm very grateful to all the Wales fans for that.
"They have always been great with me and I will miss them. It has been difficult for me saying goodbye to everyone, all very emotional. I was intent on savouring every moment, the anthem for the last time, everything.
"I have enjoyed it all. Obviously it was a big decision, so I wanted to remember everything for the last time, the final training session and walking out at the stadium, so it was just a shame that we could not get the result we wanted."
Boss John Toshack added his praise for the 33-year-old, saying: "Ryan has been a bit surprised by all the fuss. If he didn't know before, he knows now how people, the players and the fans, think about him.
"I would have liked him around to use, but I understand his thinking with the amount of games he will face next season for United.
"It's the last year of his contract and he has other things to think about."

Ryan Giggs is a true legend - many thanks to him for all the special performances he's put in (in a Man Utd shirt) through the years, especially for his FA Cup goal against Arsenal.
I do, however, feel that it is time for him to move on from Old Trafford. His performances over the past 6 months have been lacking and I feel he will do better at a smaller club for another 1 or 2 seasons.
Anyone who had watched the game will have realised that Giggs was the best player on that night. With him having retired there is no one who can take his place. Giving Bellamy the captaincy is the biggest mistake new mistake that Toshack has made. He is all mouth and no action. Good luck Wales!

I think you're wrong, Jaco. His performances were poor towards the end of the season. But that's exactly why he's resigned from international football.
Giggs played more football than almost any other player in our squad. It's hardly surprising that his form dipped towards the end of the season.
Even players much younger than than him, who had played a similar number of games, (e.g. Carrick and Ronaldo) also struggled in our last few games. Is it any wonder Giggsy couldn't keep up the brilliance he showed in the first half of the season?
And it's that brilliance which means he remains a vital player for this club.
Have to agree with Mick; I have been a critic of Giggs in the past but you cant overlook his performances during the first 6 months of the season and I believe his downturn in form was due to being overplayed because of no suitable cover, this has obviously been addressed with the signing of Nani so Giggs will hopefully be fresher during the season run in.
Toshack made some very insulting and totally inappropriate comments about Giggs form and value to the team prior to the game. The timing of those comments was outrageous and proves what an utter plank Toshack is.
Had Giggs been interested in playing friendlies then he could have been their most capped player!!!
Giggs would be in my starting 11 for every game against top-half clubs, and every European game. He is still a class act, and his (and Scholes' and Nev's) experience and guile are going to be very important for us over the next two or three seasons. Twelve less international games per season, plus our sudden strength on the left, will probably extend Giggs career by a full two seasons. He is still fit, committed, intelligent, and ambitious - the perfect role model for the new boys - and I expect and hope that he will still be playing a role into his mid / late thirties - especially in the big games.
Giggs is a true legend. One of the best players to ever put on a Utd shirt. He is also a model professional, extremely loyal and a true ambassador for the club. As Mick mentioned, his performances dropped a little towards the end of the season due to being over-played. However, given adequate cover (Nani, Park), he still has a pivotal squad role to play over the next couple of seasons and will be crucial in helping the younger kids to develop as footballers and in their understanding of what it means to play for our club.
sterling you are just one of a number of posters who suggest park as a replacement for giggs. hes not and never will be when he has played left side he has been absoloutley awful not his fault really. he is just another example of square peg round hole. the lad is out and out right footed and never ever uses his left foot. nani is also right footed by the way.
True BD about Nani - however I notice Portugal play him on the left though which is fine if you are not playing a central target man to ping crosses into. This seems to be a tactic used to encourage diagonal runs into the box which are hard for defenders to track and pulls defenders out of position and create space. Not so good when you want to track the attacks of opposition full backs. Incidentally Anderson is left footed so if we want to play a traditional wing role he can play on the left in tandem with Evra.
Nani is right-footed. But he's just as comfortable down the left wing as he is on the right. Like Ronaldo.
Does this mean we're in for another season of BobbyD complaining about square pegs in round holes?
(Agree that Park is much better on the right or through the middle, by the way)
Bobbyd - I think Mick and Duncan have already summed up what I was saying about Park or Nani playing wide. I agree that I'd always try and avoid playing Park out wide on the left as he's not natural there at all. However, he can fill in on the right and we know Ronaldo can play left if necessary. I'll wait to see if / how Nani performs on the left but apparently he's played there before so hopefully shouldn't be a problem. The point on Anderson being left footed is an interesting one too - while we also have Evra (I think we can all agree that I hope Richardson wouldn't figure!). As a traditional pacey left midfielder / winger myself, and someone who grew up with Lee Sharpe and then Giggs (well after Bryan Robson when I was really young - but he was more centre left than wide), I'd always prefer to see a left footed player playing there to give the natural width. The problem of course is finding one half as talented as Giggs! Some have mentioned Pedersen but I think he's more in the Beckham mould - i.e. a bit slower - and that doesn't seem to fit the pacey style we're going for at the moment. Other than that, I can't really think of too many left footed wingers playing in the top leagues - Robben....er...er (there are of course several playing in the lower leagues).
Isn't Pederson right footed?
He's as Welsh as a nine bob note.
Anderson is left-footed though!
So even when giggs retires we can still play Ron on the left and and have a left-footer to stick on the right to really outfox those crafty tactical European teams!
Duncan - I'm pretty sure Pedersen is left footed. From memory his corners and freekicks are taken with the left foot. I've also checked out on You Tube and he looks pretty left footed to me. Maybe he's just been pulling our leg all these years and is a secret right footed guy!!
I'll take your word for it Sterling its just that he looks poised to thump the ball with his right peg in the photo on the story about him!
We will never see the likes of Giggs again.
Allow me as a Blue to wish the Red Dragon all the best. With George one of the best Reds not to wear an England shirt . I apologise to Dennis and the King for only naming two.
