OWEN HARGREAVES: Long-running transfer saga is close to an end

OWEN Hargreaves is at United's Carrington training ground today as his move to United edges closer.

Bayern Munich confirmed at the weekend that Hargreaves was to leave the Bundesliga club for around £17m.

Hargreaves is hoping for a deal to be concluded by the end of the week and is planning talks with Reds officials, report Sky Sports.

I think his price is ridiculous. We're being robbed at 17m just as we were robbed with the Carrick fee.
That said, i am glad we're getting this done now in May. At least, whatever he costs, we can then move on to our other targets and have plenty of time to get them.
I dont know if Hargreaves is good enough - i hope he is. He's certainly the style of player i believe we need so fingers crossed he can make an impact for us.

Lets not forget though that the money for Hargeaves, f 17m, is less than the reported 20m we bid last year. LAST YEAR being the operative words here, meaning we should still have a substantial warchest as this money is the money we should have spent last summer. With the new tv contract meaning clubs like Shef Utd, had they stayed up, were looking at spending in the region of 20-25m, we should easily, after signing Hargreaves, have about 30m available to buy the striker and winger we need, and thats not counting money we may generate from sales.

I'll be surprised if we do, as that would mean spending close to 50m, but considering last summer we made money and the summer before we spent 7m, we're certainly due a bit of a rollover transfer fund

I dont think we need 2 strikers when we have not given Rossi to prove himself. 1 top striker will do and a young winger to cover Ronaldo and Giggs when necessary.

I dont rate this guy at all. Fergie has better younger players in the Camp than him. He has two good games with England last year, so fergie wants him.Fergie is buying Names now not Quality.

Heaven help OH at United, if the guy is already taking 'stick' at his medical!! Seems SAF can't do right for doing wrong. When he spends he spends too much yet when he is not buying he should be buying anyone who has not supposedly snubbed us in the past. We are the biggest and the best so paying top dollar is par for the course. As for Carrick being a flop ....behave! His first season and we are champs. The guy is very good and will get better, especially playing with a ball winner like OH. And as for finding "cover" for Giggs we must get real. Giggsy is Finished. Fabulous career, Genuine RED who has given so much, but his career is over. We need a replacement for Ryan, who should stay for the odd game and bring on younger players. Head must rule heart with this decision.

I cannot believe that people are talking about Carrick and saying that he was a flop, anyone who says that surely cannot have been to Old Trafford every week this season. It did take him a few games to bed in but since then he has been very good, definitely not a flop. Some of the passes he puts in are very. It just amazes me. In respect of Hargreaves I think this will be a good buy and whilst the price seems high this is always gonna happen because it is Manchester United buying an England International. I agree though I would like to see Berbatov at OT.

£17M? I dont think the lad is worth that at all, £6m perhaps but if MUFC are foolish enough to splash out with that kind of money then well good luck to them. Now the season is over can I congratulate Chelsea on winning the CC and FA Cup's AC Milan for winning the BIG one for a SEVENTH time and hope our match officials are happy now Man Utd won the Premiership,last but not least Seville for gaining back to back Uefa cups. P.S. I believe they are renaming Chicory Tips 1970 record Chirpee chirpee cheep cheep to - - WHERES YOUR TREBLE GONE!!!!!!! catch you next season lads and whatever you do KEEP READING!!!!!!!

I cannot believe that people are still rabbiting on about carrick!
One: we've just won the premiership with him as almost an ever present. I presume he was a passenger carried by the other 10, who occasionally included O'Shea, Fletcher, Richardson and several crocked half fit other passengers. Wow that takes some doing.
Two: virtually every football writer has described him as one of the most improved players in the Prem and a key factor in United's success. Oh and by the way, those are the same people who voted Ronalod top dog.
Now. Hargreaves was widely regarded by England supporters as being our best (and therefore world class) player at the world cup. Roy Keane has gone. There was only one Roy Keane. Owen can play fullback, holding, defensive and even attacking midfield. He scores goals and regularly takes free kicks for Bayern. Virtually every single player going to ManYoo or Chelsea that we want costs over the odds. We are frankly held to ransome and it's the same for Real and Barca. Who would you rather have? Barton at £5.5m, Sulley Muntari at £8m; Jenas at £15m; or hargreaves at £17m (aged 25!). As for Carrick a year ago, I firmly predict that OH will become a star and key player in the ManU team for the next 5 years. AND I DON'T CARE WHAT WE PAID.

There is no way Carrick is a flop, He has got better as the season has gone on and he will improve next season.
I will be very happy if we get the three platers we need most Hargreaves,Berbatov,Nani.
With those three our starting 11 next season would be amazing.

Terry, scores goals? I don't think so, I think he's about as prolific as Rio.

OH is really underestimated and his CV is bloody impressive. He's spent a decade at one of the top clubs in the world surrounded by class players has loads of CL experience (you could say that about Fletcher I suppose) and i think that he'll make a good partnership with Carrick. He's being brought in for a specific job and it's better to look at the role he'll play than his general ability. He's going to be part of the double pivot central midfield with Carrick, patrolling the area in front of defence, breaking up play and then feeding Scholes or the wingers, which I think he'll do very well. Also he's got a hell of a lot more personality than most of the team and I see him as the next captain after Gary.

The only drawback is that his injury record is on a par with Saha, if he dares to get injured he's in for some stick!

Terry u r damn right mate!I would rather we pay 17m for OH than someone like Muntari, Makoun, Reo Coker, Jenas, etc. We should not forget that some time back both Djemba-Djemba and Kleberson were bought with a view to eventually play in the defensive midfield position and both were big flops. We should not take any risk and we should buy someone with proven experience even if it means paying a bit more for him. I am confident OH will become a star player for Man Utd and i hope this transfer is concluded soon so that we can focus on other transfer targets.
