UNITED'S left-back merry-go-round could grind to a halt if Southampton's Gareth Bale is snapped up by Tottenham instead of the Reds.
All United's senior No 3s - Gabriel Heinze, Patrice Evra and Mikael Silvestre - are interesting foreign suitors.
Clubs in Italy, France and Spain had been alerted to a potential mini-clearout to make way for 17-year-old Welsh international Bale's arrival.
But the Premiership champions are going to have to be quick if they still want to add Bale to the squad as Tottenham have leapt to the head of the queue with a bid reportedly accepted. Spurs have had a bid for Bale on the table since the January transfer window.
They have reportedly offered £6m in cash and then add-ons that would take the fee eventually up to around £10m.
Saints want money in quickly to keep their head above water and though manager George Burley is still talking up the possibility of keeping Bale it is believed the club have resigned themselves to losing him.
The player has just one-year left on his contract and Southampton do not want to lose out on a windfall next summer when he'd be a free agent.
Bale had been for talks at White Hart Lane in January but decided to stay on until the end of the season at St Mary's Stadium.
But Tottenham's bid still stands and they are said to now be in pole position.
Interest
If United are still keen they cannot afford to dally but if their interest has cooled, then it could put the brakes on sales.
Heinze, Evra and Silvestre, who have all contested the left-back berth this campaign, are all on various shopping lists for the summer.
United’s 2005 Player of the Year Heinze is the most likely departure as he can buy out the remainder of his two-year contract by law having served three years of the five-year deal he signed in 2004 when moving from he signed for £7.9m from Paris St Germain for £7.9m.
Now Juventus, long-term suitors of the Argentinian, are back in Serie A a move to Italy could tempt Heinze.
Valencia and Villarreal are also understood to be monitoring his situation at Old Trafford, which is no longer as rock-solid as it once was.
Evra’s injuries forced him to concede the left-back battle late on after his early-season form won him Fergie’s vote. But now he is in Barcelona’s sights.
The Spaniards are looking to replace Giovanni Van Bronckhorst and are impressed by Evra’s speed and attacking ability from defence.
Silvestre wants to remain at Old Trafford but Lyon are keen again, having been rejected by the defender in January 2006.
If United trump Tottenham’s bid for Bale then one of the current left backs is almost certain to depart.
Even if they don’t Heinze might voluntarily trim the numbers in the department anyway.
Who is your ideal combination for left-backs at United? Have your say.

I read this morning about Juve's interest in Heinze and the fee quoted was 4m. Now obviously paper speculation is often way off the mark, but that fee made me laugh. Just over half what we paid for him. The sad part is it wouldnt really surprise me if we did sell him for that sort of money

I remember that before the game vs Milan, the Italian TV pundits were advising Ancellotti to exploit the right side of United's defence (O Shea). After the first game, they changed opinions and saw Heinze as our weakest link.
The problem is that at 29 I cannot see Heinze's pace improving.
Moreover, since the arrival of Vidic, Heinze influence on the rest of the defence decreased considerably.
My impression is that Heinze will leave. Not sure if Silvestre will follow him - with Evra and OShea we have enough cover at left back. It also seems that Pique will return for sure - with Brown he can provide cover for vidic, Rio, Neville and also in midfield (as he s done for Zaragoza).

we are interested in him then we will see where the player wants to go. On the matter of the worst technically gifted player to EVER play for us then there can only be one winner. DONG!!!!! God have you seen this lad? He plays like me.

Silvestre puts the fear of God in me, every time he plays centre-half but I actually rate him as a full-back. He's better defensively than Evra and better going forward than Gabby.
Hate to say it but, on current form, Heinze is the defender who looks the most surplus to requirements.

If we go for Bale then we can offer to buy him and loan him back to Southampton for another twelve months.

I couldn't agree more with all of you. The guy is infuriating at times. Since his injuries and him going to the world cup unfit the guy has been going backwards. He is slow to react to danger, slides and has to stop the ball take two steps back and hoof it to no one in particular.
He pressurises the centre halfs by his inability to clear the ball when in position whereas Evra starts our attacks and can pass and on his day can cause havoc

Really want to see Pique bought back and given games...I suspect Evans will go on loan again, this time in Premier League. Another year with Keane would suit all I think.
Gabby is faultless in his desire and I REALLY wanted him to succeed, but he does look more and more like a clumsy pedestrian.
Sly's P45 is surely in the post.
Talking about right price... I posted yesterday about the 'knowing our values' statements that are issued from OT. Reassurances about not paying over the odds. But it looks like Chelski get Sidwell on a free and we pay a reputed 17 million for Hargreaves! How well do we do in the market?
I would love to see another inspired signing....someone we don't expect who turns out to be a real gem.
In the category of Cantona, Schmeical, Sheringham and OGS.

May i add that just coz spurs think they are in pole position, United have been in this position before, Rooney/Newcastle, Keane/Blackburn.
If he is the next best thing then we should definatley buy him now.

But seriously, let's assess the situation. Heinze isn't the same as he was 2-3 years ago, he heasn't really recovered from his injury. Given that Evra IMO is the first choice due to his adapting to the PL and showing the form that sent Monaco to the CL final, I think Heinze will be the first to leave, as he'll want first team football, whereas Silvestre is willing to stay as a squad player. For Silvestre, I trust SAF has far more knowledge of Bale, Pique, Evans etc than I do, so he'll know if he can replace MS with GP, if he'll buy Bale, or if Evans is ready, or if JOS will be mainly fullback as we now have PS, MC, OH and DF in central midfield. Which makes me conclude what most people seem to agree: Evra is no 1, and Heinze will probably leave.
