PREMIERSHIP Champions Manchester United held off a determined Chelsea side to earn a creditable point at Stamford Bridge.
The Reds made eight changes from the side which beat rivals City with Wes Brown, Gabriel Heinze and Alan Smith the only survivors.
Rio Ferdinand, Wayne Rooney, Michael Carrick, Edwin van der Sar, and Paul Scholes were on the bench - but the rest of the first team squad were handed a day off for this Barclays Premiership match.
Chelsea must have wondered whether it was worth giving the newly-crowned champions a guard of honour as only three regular first-team players started the game for United.
It was almost a clash of the reserve teams as Chelsea also took the opportunity to rest a host of their own first-teamers.
The FA Cup final between the two teams on May 19 will be a vastly different affair but the opening five minutes of this league clash produced little to enthuse about.
Chelsea were the first to show any attacking desire when Shaun Wright-Phillips was put clean through on goal by Mikel John Obi.
Save
The former City winger managed to get a shot away but Tomasz Kuszczak denied him an opening goal with a one-handed save.
Wright-Phillips surprised Kuszczak in the 15th minute when his cross almost dropped into the net at the far post with the United keeper struggling.
But the game livened up in the 20th minute when Mikel’s lunge on Chris Eagles brought him a booking and Sir Alex Ferguson out of his touchline seat.
Mikel had already been the victim of two reckless tackles by Alan Smith but the Nigerian youngster, who shunned United in favour of Chelsea, deserved a yellow card for his crude tackle.
The subsequent uproar from the United players and officials saw Gabriel Heinze booked by referee Graham Poll for dissent.
United’s first chance of the game arrived in the 36th minute when Terry’s poor header fell to the feet of the waiting Smith but instead of having a shot himself, the United schemer’s pass was deflected into the path of Gabriel Heinze who fired wide from six yards.
Chelsea replaced Mikel with Joe Cole at half-time and the home side momentarily lifted the tempo.
United defenders Kieran Lee and Wes Brown were booked within minutes for poor challenges on Cole and then Sinclair respectively.
Chelsea’s Lassana Diarra then found himself on the wrong side of referee Poll when he upended Chris Eagles.
The Chelsea player was shown the yellow card but United failed to punish them further when Kieran Richardson’s free-kick sailed by Carlo Cudicini’s right-hand upright.
Booked
In the 53rd minute Sinclair was replaced by Israeli international Ben Sahar.
The game then livened up again but for all the wrong reasons in the 56th minute.
First Michael Essien was booked for throwing the ball away and moments later United should have had a penalty when the Ghana international brought down Eagles.
But with some of United’s players still appealing for a spot-kick, Eagles exacted revenge with a lunging tackle on Wright-Phillips.
The United man was lucky to escape with just a yellow card for the offence which brought the tally of bookings to five inside 12 minutes since the start of the second half.
In the 64th minute Michael Carrick replaced Heinze for United but it was Chelsea who almost broke the deadlock four minutes later when Wright-Phillips tested Kuszczak with a stinging shot.
In the 78th minute, Mourinho was momentarily banished to the stands after being ordered from the dugout by referee Poll.
Mourinho was involved in a pointed exchange of views with Poll on the touchline after the Chelsea coach was angered by the official’s decision to penalise Makelele for a foul on substitute Wayne Rooney.
But seconds later he returned to his seat in home dugout after being asked to do so by fourth official Mark Clattenburg.
Chelsea almost won it two minutes from time but Sahar’s effort was cleared off the line by Kieran Lee.
What is your verdict on the game? Have your say.

The back four were brilliant if a shade fortunate at times. Our keeper is a heart attack waiting to happen!
Ole looks out of it now I'm afraid to say and Dong looked very, very, ordinary. Eagles did OK, as did Lee. Smith played his part manfully as usual. Fletcher was very good but Richrdson just can not seem to get there can he?

eagles played well so did the other young players.
Cant ask more of these players, just lets play them a little more often and im sure that they will get better and become more confident and shine.
Well done.

Calling other people clowns makes you a very sad ambassador for the the great people and City of Liverpool.

For me eagles was the one who stood out. He looks confident on the ball and i think with some experience could be an interesting prospect.
Lee did a good job considering he was up against joe cole, wright phillips and kalou. Not bad players, and i think he aquited himself really well.
Dong on the other hand was awful. His movement was terrible and as such he kept himself out of the game. Hope he improves, but then again it was his first real game for us.
Out of senior guys, smith and particularly richardson dissapointed. I know the game lost all of its importance when we won the title, but they had an opportunity to shine last night and didn't again.
ole looks tired and old. I hope he comes back strong after the summer break, i would love to see him find the kind of form that we all know he is cabable of.

Much more important was the action off the pitch. Singing their hearts out for 90 minutes, our away fans were brilliant, as they have been all season. Loving the "keep your chin up gestures" to Mourinho. Brilliant!

Kit Kat was a little shaky but only after Terry elbowed him in the head in the first half. Lee, Brown and O'Shea were great. Heinze looked dodgy again at times. Let Ole retire gracefully now. Richardson might not be popular on here, but he's better than Fletcher. He has pace, he's left footed and has a hell of a shot. Should give him 1 more season.Fletcher thought we were playing in blue in the first half. Eagles impressed me, Smith was anonymous. Dong is a carthorse and it rings true now that signing him was a PR stunt for the Asian market. I was embarrassed for him.
All that said,we played a STUPID 4-5-1 again. We had 3 strikers on the field and 2 were in midfield. We played Eagles and Ole on the left, neither one is left footed. The one pacey left footer we had was playing center mid. Players again playing out of position and not to their strengths.

"Liverpool as been" I think the word you're looking for is "has beens". Because 17 years is a very long time in football.
You claim to support Liverpool yet you clearly know nothing about the history of your club, otherwise you wouldn't dream of suggesting that a European trophy is more important than winning the league. Have you even heard of BIll Shankly? If so, you may be aware of his thoughts on winning the league, namely "This is our bread and butter - this is the one we want to win all the time"
He would be turning in his grave if he knew that muppers like you were belittling his legacy by claiming you're not bothered about LFC winning the league.
I suggest you take your mangled grammar and tedious wind-uppery and do one. You're making an idiot of yourself on a daily basis. Or are you enjoying the humiliation?

Surely if they can do that they should be trying harder in the league.Do you not feel the team might be cheating it's supporters by only trying to win the CL.
The thing that gives me most pleasure is having a team getting good results week in week out.Perhaps RAFA is only interested in enhancing his own reputation as a CL winner in the hope Real or Barca will poach him.Apology accepted.

THE truth is :
& It's not about being negative (as there is no need to be 'cos we drew at Chavski with a 2nd maybe 3rd string team) it's just relating to facts - KK is dodgy.. so he can stop shots, well - he's a goalie, if any goalie can't do that then they're knackered!! Fact is, he can't kick properly, panicks with the ball at his feet, is terrible on crosses and generally provides no confidence to his defenders when the ball is in the air !! (& that's not just last night).
Wes was the best united player on the pitch bar none!
Lee & Eagles did really well, as well as could be expected.
Dong was bobbins, didn't look a prem striker! : compare him to Kalou, 'cos that's what you want in your back up striker. Pace, skill, say no more.
Ole, i genuinely can't remember him in the game & as much as we all love him ... he's finished at the top level barring a few cameo sub performances (that sounds familiar).
JoS proved that his place in the squad is as a 'back-up' defender just as smudge is a'back-up' striker (who offers something different) not a CM !
Gaby, top bloke for the cause, but my paperboy distributes better than him !!
fletch showed why opinion is so divided on him ... 'cos his performances are so divided !
And finally Richardson ... oh, well times up, my dinner's here !!
KEEP THAT CHIN UP ! That's why you're runners up !!
