MANCHESTER United have been linked with a big-money swoop for Barcelona striker Samuel Eto'o.

Boss Sir Alex Ferguson has been left short of forwards in the latter part of the campaign because of Henrik Larsson's return to Sweden and Louis Saha's persistent injury problems.

Now the Reds have made the first move towards a £27million bid for Barca and Cameroon star Eto'o, report the Daily Mail.

Eto'o, 26, has had his own injury problems this season but has come back strongly to score 10 goals in his last 14 appearances.

the stuff dreams are made of. best striker on the planet by a mile. not sure about his attitude though can be contraversial at times. Although the character probably contributes to the player

Not convinced by him. World class player no doubt, but will he hack it in the EPL? I'd prefer to see Torres here or better still more midfielders.

According to the press he s good friend of Rio. Besides from being a good striker he also tracks back a lot (he makes up a bit for Ronaldinho) and is quite versatile.
I agree with the post that his style resembles that of Saha, - I just hope that he has a different fitness record.

Chris - we are the biggest club in the world, this is exactly the type of player we should be in for.

But like you I won't be holding my breath on it happening - more than likey Huntelaar from Ajax (IMO).

This is just building our hopes up lads!!! In my time supporting Utd i'm struggling to think of us signing a truely world class striker at the top of his game for big money. RVN was highly rated but made his name with us. Rooney likewise. Both big money but had it all to prove. Yorke and Cole were magnificent signings, but were not rated world class, certainly not at the time we signed them. Eto'o just doesnt seem like the kind of player we sign. I hope to God i'm proved wrong because he's one of the best strikers in the world but i think this is either idle specualtion or someone putting 2 and 2 together and getting 5

Sign him in a direct swop for Smith. I also hear Barca want pace instead of guile on their flanks, maybe we could offer them Richardson for Messi?

Some reports today suggest that Barca are launching a bid for Henry. If that goes ahead maybe we would have a chance as i don't see Barca doing any deals with chelskov. We imo would be the next logical choice for Eto'o. Probably wont happen but its a nice daydream anyway.

ethanretrick I am sure Eto would be able to adapt to the Premiership alot quicker and better then Torres due to the amount of adapting he has done so far in his career while Torres has been at the same club and hasn't any CL experience. Your comments seem baseless and only on the idea that Torres has a nice name!

Eto`o is Top Class but He will need time to settle and learn the laguage! He will also often go to African Cup of nations in january which is the crutial Title period!! Therefore Berbatov is thee perfect Taget; His movement;1st-touch and premiership experience will be crucial at the begining of nxt season!! The other two must be OH&Nani !!

following his fall out with Ronaldinho this year, coupled with doubts about his attitude in general, can anyone really believe SaF will go for him especially after his recent comments about team harmony/ruud exit ? good article men !

Spot on, Balders. This season has been all about team players. Not a description that would seem to apply to Eto'o, based on his career to date.

a few people question his attitude, whereas i just see him as a fighter for the team he plays for. A truely world class striker, the best on the planet and would be an amzing signing. however, i cannot see it happening, there would be many other clubs interested including the Russians.

Why not just go for Henry? If Arsenal are looking to cash in on him then surely it's worth SAF asking about him! In any case I feel SAF will bring in the right players without much problem because of our excellent style of football. Many top European coaches stated that we were playing the best football in Europe so attracting the really top players should be easy, especially when you add the chance of playing alongside Ronaldo and Rooney into the equation. Mick, at Barcellona both Ronaldinho and Eto had problems with Rijkaard. But Ronaldinho, besides his name, he also have the Brazilian clan at Barcellona alongside him, while Eto is alone.
His attitude is questionable but I think he has a good team ethic - more than Ronaldinho for sure. In some games I saw him dropping back helping the defence. Another thing that many people are ignoring is that Eto as an African player would help United marketing machine in the Black continent.

Eto transfer could also trigger a striker musical chairs according to the press - Henry is close to Barcellona, Milan are interested in Eto, but seem ready to wait for the return of Shevchenco and both United and Chelsea (surprise!!) are interested in Berbatov and Eto. My bet is that Chelsea are still undecided about Sheva (up to a few days ago even Mourinho's future was unsure), that is why Fergie is trying to hurry up things by stating publicly that he is interested in Eto.

Fergie should pay Barca whatever price they ask for Eto'o. A phenomenal talent, I have long believed that he makes Ronaldinho shine at the Nou Camp, and has arguably been more integral to their recent success than the Brazilian.

Eto'o is definately world class...the best striker in the world I think...I'd prefer to have him in Milan before Ronaldinho...Eto'o would be a hit in any league.

Shevchenko? Chelski can keep him!! But I guess for 5m euros we can take him back!! Or better yet, we should make him pay us 10m to come back!
