Sir Alex Ferguson's men chose the worst night possible to turn in one of their poorest displays of the entire campaign, with Cristiano Ronaldo among the biggest let downs.
That is not to apportion blame on the young Portugal winger's shoulders, there were plenty of others around him who did not perform either.
But, without the spark Ronaldo has provided so often this season, United were a dreadful disappointment, their treble hopes shattered.
Nursing a single goal lead from the first meeting at Old Trafford last week, United saw their advantage wiped out by Kaka inside 11 minutes.
Clarence Seedorf capped a brilliant personal display by netting the second on the half hour and hope had virtually evaporated for United by the time Alberto Gilardino drilled home a third late on.
And a bad night for Ferguson's team ended in bad tempered fashion as Paul Scholes managed to provoke Gennaro Gattuso into a furious rage and Ronaldo was booked for a wild lunge on Marek Jankulovski.
Ferguson had promised, win or lose, his team would remain true to their attacking beliefs.
Yet, from the outset, it was obvious something was badly wrong.
There was a hesitancy, almost a timidness about their play. Routine passes went astray with unnerving regularity, loose balls were snaffled by Milan players. Ronaldo and Rooney, so brilliant on domestic and European stages recently, could do nothing right.
At the back, United's defence, supposedly strengthened by the introduction of Nemanja Vidic, creaked and groaned like an old gate in need of a spot of oil.
In contrast, the home team were superb, with Kaka and Seedorf among the most impressive.
United were given a warning of what was to come as early as the second minute when Kaka's free-kick was nodded out to Seedorf, whose snap-shot would have gone in had fellow Dutchman Edwin van der Sar not tipped it over.
There was just a hope, as it all started to unfold in front of Ferguson's eyes, that if United could somehow hold on to their precious advantage, a stronger force might eventually emerge from the shell of a team they appeared to be.
Unfortunately, it did not happen as the Red Devils were caught out by a distinctly 'English' goal as Alessandro Nesta launched a long ball towards the edge of their box.
Seedorf won the aerial duel and turned his header neatly into Kaka's path.
Having given a demonstration of his finishing skills at Old Trafford, United feared what was to follow and the Brazilian duly fired a low shot into the bottom corner.
Ferguson's problems did not end there as Andrea Pirlo skidded a shot just wide.
At least there was some attacking threat from the visitors, albeit a sporadic one, with Ryan Giggs drilling a low shot at Dida which the Milan goalkeeper smothered at the second attempt.
Disaster was lurking though as Vidic, who looked off the pace on his first appearance since breaking a collarbone on March 31, headed Kaka's cross to Seedorf.
The midfielder brushed Darren Fletcher away as though the young Scot did not exist, then took maximum advantage of a fortuitous ricochet as Vidic closed in to make a tackle, belting his volley into virtually the same spot as Kaka had found earlier.
It left United in exactly the same position as they had been in at Everton on Saturday.
At Goodison Park they famously roared back to win. This was an entirely different proposition though and all hope would have been lost had Filippo Inzaghi found the net from Massimo Oddo's cross instead of flashing a near-post effort just wide.
It got no better after the break. As Ronaldo hung his head at another pass sent straight to an opponent, Milan burst forward, Kaka beat Vidic and only a fine save from Van der Sar kept United alive.
Only now, with virtually an hour on the clock, did the visitors start playing.
Ronaldo rocketed two free-kicks into the Milan wall, Fletcher screwed an angled shot wide and Rooney appealed in vain for a penalty when Oddo barged into him from behind.
But the goal that would have given United fresh hope just would not come and in the end it was Milan who scored again, Gilardino racing through alone 12 minutes from time before beating Van der Sar in clinical fashion.
So it was the Italians, so nearly expelled from the tournament for their part in the match-fixing scandal, who will go to Athens, eager to atone for the misery Liverpool inflicted on them with that amazing win in Istanbul two years ago.
What did you think of United's performance? Have your say.

We showed them too much respect and they played a very smart game!
Poor defending, poor passing and lack of fight at times were the highlighting factors!
O'S, Heinze, Giggsy & CR struggled, they were poor tonight no doubt!
It is so dissapointing!
Rooney didn't get enough decent passes, and we were struggling to get the ball forward quickly enough, and too much loss of possession.
The real United didn't appear in milan tonight!
I don't wish to be too critical, we were just so poor.
It's as if a few players hadn't slept well, they just weren't up to it!
All-in-all a poor team performance!
Of course not hepled by giving goals away!
It made the job for them a normal game, playing at a tempo so low and ball sure!
They chose the right passes, raised the tempo at the right time - goals; & it was again almost like men against boys!
Feel for SAF, but we were in general out-played & naive!
We are going to have to get over this.
I feel for those in Milan that still have to travel home!
It was the dream I didn't want to come true!

Important we now raise ourselves for City on saturday. I'm sure most of us whould have been very happy with the league at the start of the season and that is a real possibility if we just stay focused and put this evening behind us.

United have played great this
season in the CL. Hope this
loss hurts enough that Ronaldo and Rooney can learn
from it, use it as inspiration for future CL games.United just didn't show up tonight. Carrick looked out of his depth, Giggs out of step.
Had Rio, Gary and Evra been back there it might have been different. Early on
we gave the ball to Heinze way too much to start the offense, he's not the
player we want for that,
Scholes and Carrick should
have been given the ball.
We didn't play smart and Milan played their best game. Regardless, we'll be
back, next year our team will be that bit better again through experience.
We still need to replace the
role Keane played, in Milan
we had no one to inspire.
I'm sad, hope United take it
out on City with the some big
hurt, Chelsea lose to Arsenal allowing us Reds some solice for today's loss with a nice little piece of hardware.
Up the Reds,

certain player's did not show up tonight and our record in this competition since we won it is POOR FERGIE VERY POOR.
the performance poor those united player's tonight had no FIRE,HUNGER,PASSION, AND NO BELIEF..
ronaldo take no more free-kick's this for me was united's worse europe performance since getting battered 0-4 by barcelona in 1990's.
that was nothing than emmbarrsing to say the least,in the summer united need to buy and buy big as certain were just poor tonight fergie again the starting line was stange we do this all the time.
but on another hand if someone had said in august we would reach the c.l. semi-final and fa cup final and be 5 point's clear of chelsea with 3 game's to go i would rightly bite there hand of.

I was hoping we would put up more of a fight than that. very disheartened by the way the lads just folded in the heat of the san siro.
Heinze was the worst of the lot. Clumsy and made all the wrong choices, especially for the second goal.
There were a few of our lads tonight who were completely overawed by the occasion, the oppositon and the atmosphere in the stadium. Its almost like they couldn't believe they were playing in the san siro against Milan. Carrick and fletcher come to mind, they were both out of their depth tonight, although the more experienced players around them were no better.
Scholes was out of the game, seemingly trying to avoid getting a yellow card. Pirlo, Seedorf, and gattusso were too much for our midfield.
Ronaldo was trying to hard again to show the world that 'hes' the best player around. There is absolutely no doubt now that Kaka is the main man, but at least ronaldo gave it a shot. His time will come..
Rooney and VDS were our best players tonight. Rooney should have had a penalty, but then apart from that, we didn't deserve anything out of this game.
Overall, united have done tremendously well this season, and still have the league and FA cup double to aim for. One bad performance doesn't suddenly undoe everything they have done this season. But Europe was a step too far this time around, but we still got to the semis even after all the injuries. There are players in this squad who have never played at this level before, and would have learnt plenty from this european campaign especially from Seedorf, kaka and gattusso.
It still bodes very well for next season, but we will need to reinforce the squad if we are to match the quality of Milan and the rest of europes elite.
Now lets move on and focus on the league matches coming up. Then on to the FA cup final. Its not over yet. lets not allow this defeat to derail the season. City and west ham are not milan. And the bridge ain't the san siro!!!!!
I feel much better already, and its only 23.40 hrs. The next 3 days are going to be torture though....oh why oh why oh why???????Arghhhhhhh!!!

It has been a great run this year. I honestly didn't expect us to get this far.
We'll be better for the experience. And we'll be back next year.
I can just see the press and every other idiot jumping on Ronaldo though saying he's overrated. He had a bad game but that's definitely not what he needs. I thought the praise in recent times had been a little OTT but this will bring him crasing back to Earth and he'll be a better player for it.
The same goes for Wayne. We need a couple of buys in the summer. But this team DEFINITELY has the makings of a great one.
I honestly am not happy with Saha. He didn't do wrong today but his declaring himself mentally unready when we've needed him most does NOT go down well with me.
The game also SHOWED how vital Rio is to us. He's made mistakes all right. But our defence just is NOT the same without him. I've always thought he's been worth every penny of that 30 million we paid for him.
Scholes and Giggs both had nights to forget. I've praised Fletch in recent weeks but today he honestly looked like the old Fletch to me. Anyway, same for him as Roon and Ron.
Vida was clearly NOT match fit but Fergie did not have a choice. He looked rusty and clumsy to me. We need Rio back as soon as possible.
We played shit tonight, but that still does not hide the fact we've had an AMAZING season so far. Hopefully, we'll finish it off with the Prem and the FA Cup.
Up the Reds!

It was obvious that we need one or two players to compete with Milan in their own backyard.
As you would expect in the semi-final we met a class act.The best thing UNITED can do now is come home and win the league ASAP.
Five goals conceded over two legs.I think we need a Gattuso.
