After dragging United back on level terms against AC Milan with an instinctive second-half strike from Paul Scholes' inspired pass, Rooney then latched on to a Ryan Giggs through ball before lashing home a phenomenal first-time effort which sealed a 3-2 first-leg win.
Providing they avoid defeat in the San Siro next Wednesday, they will confirm an all-English meeting with either Chelsea or Liverpool in Athens on May 23. And Ferguson knows who he will have to thank.
"Wayne was a threat to Milan all night," said the United boss.
"We played him up front on his own because we wanted to stretch their defence.
"It meant he wasn't going to get the greatest involvement in the match but he still made some fantastic runs between the two central defenders and of course, the winning goal was an incredible hit.
"He didn't take a touch on it, just hit it first-time. It was a brilliant goal.
"On an occasion like tonight, we needed our big players to hit the heights."
What do you think? Have your say.

If, and it's a big if, we get back one, hopefully two, of our first-choice defenders for the return leg then I've every confidence we won't get beat. Even with the same XI you'd have to fancy us to get a result.

Think it sets it up for a good game over there where they need to come out and play - hopefully leaving space for our pace to exploit.

Giggs is a living legend, is United through and through and may have days where he doesn't play particularly well but he is always 110% commited to the United cause.
Need I remind you about a certain 30-something player who, in the 90th minute, when everyone was cream-crackered, tracked back, tackled his man, ran 40 yards with the ball and slipped Wazza in with a sublime pass? If that's not fighting spirit and commitment, what is?
It takes more than blood and thunder to show your commitment to the cause.

I've been reading the Spanish press AS and Marca and the response has been incredible. AS has been much criticised in this forum but hats off must go to Juanma Trueba who comments on the game "Rooney rides out the Kaka storm" is the headline. "When it looked as though Kaka had bettered Ronaldo, Rooney entered to claim his place as the "Cosmic little barrel, he is like a barrel of gas that someone has thrown at the wind" He doesn't aim to compare Rooney with Ronaldo or Kaka which is like comparing "A hammer with a scalpel." "The question is not who is the best footballer but who plays the best football, here we have angels and demons, apollos and midgets, the beautiful and the ugly and the instep of Paul Scholes" - Great stuff! "The greatest redhead in the world, a magnificent midfielder whose pass of heel and instep was sublime." "With a succession of heroic impulses they pushed back Milan, they deserved glory and they got it - it was a whip lash from Rooney, a shot without loading the gun, a crack. It was a just result in the most worthy place, the perfect brooch for an immense game. A flood of tremendous exciting football with the best footballers in the world disputing for the throne." Rightly he gives great praise to Kaka as well. But there's no doubt who he thinks plays the best football in Europe at the moment. And if I was Kaka thinking of leaving Milan for next season I know which players I would want to play with - and those at Madrid don't come close.
And Scholes still "Null" points for European footballer of the year after so many years of success - ditto Giggs (best of 9th in 93). Come on DaveSadler, Hince and the rest before it's too late, start shouting these names from the rooftops. Giggs and Scholes have been important cogs now in two great sides and zilch - it's a joke which is not very funny.

to chris whittaker, i'l give you my reasons for being cheerfull. i'm a manc suppporting arguably the best football team on the planet, living in the french riviera basking in the sun, chillin' on the beach and enjoying a great season of football...played in the united tradition. Add to that, that we just beat a top milan team in the semis of the european cup with a wonder goal by rooney at the death. We go to the san siro with rooney and ronnie on fire. In the last month, previously derided players like smith and fletch have put in inspirational performances. And our midield of carrick, scholes and giggs have dominated in matches. We're not happpy to conceed 2 goals at home, but we still have a great chance to get to the final with the one goal lead. 2-2 or even 2-1 to milan, and it was all over. Thats why we're buzzing. try and enjoy it man. Why the long face? see what happens next wednesday before you write off this team.
Mick, Dublin (25/04/2007 at 16:30)
I really hope not. That's no way to support your team. And it's certainly no way to treat a player who has done so much for the club.
I may not get to many games but when I do, I get behind all eleven players in red shirts, from the first whistle to the last.
You always get some muppets and moan at certain United players throughout the game but I always assumed (hoped) they were in the minority.
Red Tiger, London (25/04/2007 at 16:38)
Chris Whittaker; One word for you mate. BELIEVE! This is Manchester United we are talking about here.
The attitude was WE WILL NOT GET BEAT last night!
Bobby D I was not at the game last night, but I saw the game and I agree with you Giggsy was rubbish apart from the pass at the death for Rooney's goal but then again so was Carrick and Scholes and Darren Fletch in the first half. They only started imposing themselves after Gattuso was taken off.
Especially PS and Carrick.
Gattusso is the lynch pin not Kaka. Without Gattusso Milan are beatable.
Kaka capitalised on our second string defence, you expect any decent player to do that.
Come on you UNITED!
