EVERGREEN: Solskjaer

OLE Gunnar Solskjaer has not abandoned the idea of staying at United beyond the end of next season.

The veteran Norwegian's contract expires in 2008 and it had been reported he would leave Old Trafford at that point.

After almost three years out with a knee injury, Solskjaer has enjoyed a remarkable campaign, scoring 11 times, with Sir Alex Ferguson predicting he could yet go on to achieve his pre-season target of 15 goals.

Solskjaer will be forever remembered for his stoppage-time winner in the 1999 Champions League final.

And the 34-year-old insisted he has no intention of quitting the Reds just yet.

"I want to play here for as long as I can," he said.

"As long as the gaffer wants me here, I will stay.

"I have one year left on my contract and I am not thinking beyond that. This season has been absolutely fantastic for me."

He has done brilliantly this season, and there probably is still no one else better at coming off the bench and grabbing a goal. I think though that his days of starting matches are nearly finished. I would be expecting that we'd have a sufficiently strong squad next season that we wouldnt need to start him. Still good to know he's an option if we're looking for a goal in the last 15 or 20 mins

Exactly, Birdy. Assuming Ole's salary isn't prohibitive, and Fergie is relaxed about the size of his squad, I'd like to see Ole staying as a squad player for at least another season.

I would love to see Ole stay with us for ever; either on the injury recovery side or in the dugout as tactician. He has a fabulous eye for seeing what's needed during the game and that's why he makes such an impact when coming on as sub.

But I don't think he's finished as a player yet. I would give him many more years in a Teddy role.

He's also got one more important attribute: he's got Red in his veins.

Mick, I think he's already on a pay as you play deal. Ole says he's getting fitter and stronger all the time so I would definitely keep him at the club.
