Cristiano Ronaldo was only six weeks old and more worried about milk than Milan when Videoton won on penalties in Hungary to knock Ron Atkinson's Reds out of the UEFA Cup after four rounds.
A Frank Stapleton goal in England sent United over to Hungary with a 1-0 advantage but Videoton levelled on their own patch and a Mark Hughes missed penalty in the shoot-out helped send the Hungarians through.
Now United are looking to preserve that 22-year record to see them past AC Milan next week and into the Athens final on May 23.
But Michael Carrick won't let the euphoria of the home thriller against the Italians deflect from the task ahead of the Reds in the San Siro.
"It does set it up nicely for the game in Milan," says the £18m midfielder. "To win was great for us. We are still confident we can finish the job but we are not getting carried away that it is over.
"We are ahead and we have a bit of an advantage but there is no way we are thinking we are through yet. But we still believe we can go through. When we play the way we want to play we can beat anyone. It is going to be fantastic over there in the San Siro but we have given ourselves a chance."
At 8.30 last Tuesday evening, however, that chance looked to be a very outside one after Kaka's two first-half goals had cancelled out Cristiano Ronaldo's fifth minute goal. But United's memorable comeback is another experience for United' to put in their locker.
Trust
Carrick reveals that trust was vital to United's 3-2 victory.
"It was another night of incredible twists and turns," added Carrick. "Their goals were two bad ones to concede. But I don't think we relaxed after our early goal. We were still fully focused. They have too much quality for you to relax.
"The way they came back was a blow. At 2-1 down you wonder if it is going to be your night. But we had come back ourselves and done it before and we will probably do it again. We have the players and we trust each other.
"We had to bounce back. It was an uphill task but we proved we could do it. If they had scored another goal then it would have been an uphill task in Milan.
"We were patient and passed the ball and created opportunities. We knew it might take to the last minute so we kept at it.
"To create the chances we did and come back the way we did is a big boost for this side. The winner has given us a huge lift."
What do you think? Have your say.

Unh?!
I heard Fergie last week saying Vidic goes for a scan this coming Monday. But now he's supposed to be playing on Wednesday?
You must be kidding me!

Believe it when I see it.

BUT, interesting news that Vida's going for a scan on Monday. This might be to see if the fracture is fully healed. If it is, the only thing stopping him from playing would be a lack of fitness. And, seeing as it wasn't a leg that he injured, his fitness levels should still be reasonable.
Interesting, very interesting...

If we don't win the league, the fa cup or the european cup, I will still be happy in my own mind that we have played some of the best football this season ever witnessed in the Premiership and the players have given it everything. Completely at ease. Shame the blues cannot say the same thing.
Now go away and bore somebody else !

Mick - sorry, but just because a fracture is healed doesn't mean you can play impact sport straight away. Once a fracture of that severity heals it takes a further four weeks for the bone and attached muscles to knit properly and regain their structural integrity. I'll be very surprised if Vidic plays again this season. There's a chance he could be available for the CL final, but would you want to risk a game like that on an unfit player? Not really.

Get back to your 'corner shop' & council house. As im sure your mam told you, don't play with the big boys.
MUFC - traditionally Manchester's FINEST.

It is a shame that some United fans think that we have the divine right to have the 11 best players in the world in their position in the team. Just stop comparing Carrick to Scholes as the former is just playing higher than the minimum level we expect a MU player to do(unlike Richardson).Carrick has been an excellent signing although the fee was a rip off. He has helped our team play a better football especially when it comes to put the ball on the ground and pass. I am happy as well to see Fletcher showing why we need to help him find a consistent level of performance by stopping to complain as soon as he has a bad game especially when Fergie plays him out of position.

But once a fracture is healed, it's healed, usually stronger than it was before the injury. This takes, on average, 4 to 6 weeks, depending on all sorts of different factors (blood supply, type of fracture etc.) You do have to consider damage to muscles and ligaments too (especially around joints) but a fractured clavicle is less likely to have these sort of complications as, say, a fractured ankle or wrist.
I haven't heard anything to suggest that Vida's injury was anything other than a simple fracture of his clavicle. I could be wrong though. What have you heard?
It will be 4 weeks on the dot next week so I doubt he'll be fit but you never know.
(And just in case you think I'm some eejit, cutting and pasting from wikipedia, I'll give you two guesses what I do for a living?!)
