Malcolm Glazer's £800million takeover of United in 2005 attracted fierce animosity from a section of the Reds support, some of whom subsequently launched rebel club FC United, who have just been promoted to the Unibond League.
Even though Glazer snr has taken a back seat, leaving sons Joel, Avram and Bryan to run the club, life at Old Trafford has largely continued as normal, helped by a massive new television deal and a superb season on the pitch for Ferguson's team.
And the United manager has confirmed his contentment with the current situation.
"The Glazers have been fine since they took over," he told The Scotsman.
"They haven't interfered with anything we do.
"I have had a couple of meetings with them, although (chief executive) David Gill obviously deals with them more regularly.
"Any time I have been with them, they have simply said to let them know if there is anything I need."
Although the Glazers' continued assurance that funds will be made available for major transfers has yet to be tested, they certainly were not found wanting when asked to stump up an incredible £31million to secure Cristiano Ronaldo's future for the next five seasons.
Dealings
This comes at a time when the Glazers' holding company for their dealings with United, Red Football, has just posted a loss of £137.7million.
While the figure would appear to justify those who fought against the takeover, sources close to the Glazer camp have claimed the losses were in line with expectations and would reduce significantly over the coming years.
A high percentage of the loss comes from the goodwill (the difference between the cost of the takeover and the conservative estimate of the club's worth at the time) generated from the deal, which is £522.4million, a sum that will depreciate by £39.2million a year over 15 years.
Interest payments totalling £85.2million were made in the 14 months to June 2006, £27.2million of which came from cash flow.
However, the Glazers are comfortable with the figures and will not be deflected from their aim of giving Ferguson the funds required to compete at the highest level.
"These are simple accounting losses reflecting the leveraged buy-out by the holding company, which is in line with expectations," said a family spokesman.
"The Glazers continue to invest for the long-term, as demonstrated by the contract extension of Cristiano Ronaldo."
Interest
By staving off interest in Ronaldo from Real Madrid and Barcelona, United have confirmed their status as one of Europe's heavyweights, with Ferguson accepting it was a deal that had to be done, no matter what the cost.
"Of course it was costly," said Ferguson.
"But I told our people 'Look, two or three years down the line, we could be playing Real Madrid and thinking to ourselves that we had the best player in the world and let him go'. Nobody would want that."
With the future of most of his current squad now secure, Ferguson is already looking potential signings.
Bayern Munich's Owen Hargreaves seems certain to complete a move to Old Trafford in the summer, while interest in Southampton's young full-back Gareth Bale could also be renewed.
In addition, it appears inevitable Ferguson will attempt to reinforce his striking options after yet another season of injury problems for Louis Saha, who performed so well at the start of the campaign following the exit of Ruud van Nistelrooy. Blackburn's Morten Gamst Pederesn has also been linked with a move.
"I would hope to add a couple of players in the summer who will improve us," said the Scot.
"We are talking about that now. There won't be sweeping changes, maybe just one or two coming in who would have the talent to make a difference."
What do you think? Have your say.

As for the Glazer take over, i still think its ridiculous. The club is now is debt for no other reason than to allow them to own it. When you look past figures and financial projections and other such stuff, thats the reality of it. We weren't in debt, they bought us, we are in debt. I dont see that we're any better off now. Had i borrowed 500m from the bank and bought Utd, using Utd as collateral, we'd be in much the same position. Only i'd have an executive box and free prawn sandwiches which would, i'm sure you'll agree, be better for everyone

We've got a few good returning players from loan spells, most notably Rossi, Foster, Bardsley and Pique. Don't forget we've also got Evans and Martin, both of whom look good enough for the future.
If we get OH, then I can't see another big signing coming in - I don't believe the money is there. I seriously doubt we'll be able to tempt Torres away, but I hope I'm wrong.
I can see our first choice wingers being Ronny and Park in the future with Richardson (hope not) and Fletcher as back-up. Up front, we've got 4 strikers or should that be 3.5 with Saha being injured a lot. Central midfield seems devoid of any back-up talent, especially once Scholes hangs up his boots. I think we need more investment in the middle of the park than anywhere else.

the intent shown by keeping ronnie is promising - many doubted whether the glazers could resist 50m from real but they have. This season we havent exactly struggled under them.
We definately need a few reinforcements tho and i think we will get OH, a decent left winger with the possibility of a cheaper striker coming in.
im happy to see how things go this summer as i do believe we would have made more transfers if the other clubs had allowed e.g bayern

But, what's done is done, no use crying over spilt milk. It's not like we couldn't see it coming (ever since the BSkyB bid). And when the opportunity was there for us fans to club together and buy a significant proportion of the club (while it was still a PLC) we weren't organised or motivated enough, for whatever reasons, to follow this through.
So we're stuck with the situation we find ourselves in. We might not like it but there you go. It's a dog eat dog world out there.
The only thing that matters to me now, is whether the Glazers are willing to keep up the kind of investment needed to allow United to continue as of the world's premier football clubs.
I'm of the school of thought that this season's success is in spite of, rather than because of, the Glazers. We made a net profit on transfers last summer and that's really not good enough. Our success is almost entirely due to a squad built from money spent before the takeover.
The fact they've left SAF in charge and re-signed Ronaldo is encouraging. But the real test will come this summer. The squad clearly needs investment and players good enough for United will not come cheap. Over to you, Mr Glazer.

Expect to see plenty of Owen Hargreaves type stories that make out we've got lots of money to spend but don't actually spend it.
The club's cash has been bled dry by the Glazers and taken out of the country already, there is nothing left in the pot for transfers. Gill would have you believe it's just an accounting adjustment. What a laugh!! If it had been the other way round do you think he would have said the large profit was due to an accounting adjustment and wasn't actually significant?
Anyway the losses are in line with expectations, which expectations are those? The ones he had before the takeover that he said were not in the interests of the club or it's shareholders?
Sorry lads, but it's happening right in front of your eyes but you're all too busy marvelling at the emporer's clothes.

Considering how much we've been kept in the dark, this is the first piece of evidence we've seen that they actually care about the future of the club, even if it is just over the next 4 or 5 years.

the way i see it though is that they want to make money from the club and the best way is from united winning - you know the saying you have to spend money to make money. lets hope thats a saying in america

There should be some decent reading for you in the archives now you're back on line (thankfully, there's been a lot less circular arguments about Fletcher and Carrick!)

It would be nice to add a striker but the sad reality is that we can only afford to buy two established players.
