So if Bayern would accept an offer of 17 to 20m what has happened to our alleged offer that is on the table until the summer? Anything over 10 million for Hargreaves will be daylight robbery. It's not that Man United cannot do without him, as Fletcher is slowly but surely growing into a superb defensive midfielder in the mould of Roy Keane. And Michael Carrick seems to thrive with Fletcher even more than he does with Scholes. So 10 million for a squad man but not a definite starter seems appropriate. If we're going to spend 18 million let's spend it on a Giggs replacement (Nani, Robben or Ribery) and on a striker (Tevez, Gudjohnsen or Huntelaar).

He is not even here yet,and you lot are at it already,just like you were with Smith and Carrick.

I'm sorry but I just can't get excited about the thought of Owen Hargreaves in a United shirt. Can't help thinking that Mascherano for 10m would have been much better business.

That said, SAF clearly rates him so I'll give him the benefit of the doubt.

Against Milan when caught on the ball in midfield his response was to throw himself to the floor, the ref naturally waved play on leaving 4 Milan forwards running on goal, they made a hash of it but should have scored, also as mentioned his passing was pants, i wouldn't give 3 mill for him.

If they are open to offers now and no one else wants to buy him we shouldnt pay more than 10 million, he isnt worth any more, and lets change targets if we cant get him. Also anyone know how he played against milan yesterday?

Ah, Mick, you've touched a nerve there. I reckon that next season, once he's settled into playing for a proper Premiership team, Mascerano will turn out to be an absolute bargain for Liverpool. In the meantime, I'm just hoping that our present midfield can do a better job on Milan in the CL semis than Hargreaves and his Munich mates did last night.

I would like to think that two transfer windows on from when we first thought we'd get him, other options are up for consideration. If SAF still thinks he's the man, so be it.

Chris what's new? It continually vex's me how some of the sheep on here blandly post to trust Gill etc. Snouts are in the trough & as Bobbydazzler said this week by the Glazers reckoning Alex should have around £70M to spend this summer! I like OH I've doubts about him & Carrick in the same line up but Alex belatedly seems determined to do it. I just hope there are other incomings to strengthen the squad & prepare for the end of Giggs & Scholes & OGS without having to be mugged all the time.

Mick i think we missed out big time with Mascherano. He's been a revalation for Liverpool in a matter of a few games, and considering they already had a very strong midfield thats saying something. And for 10m. Anyway, although i do feel like crying over it, thats spilt milk. Its only really when i see figures like 17-20m quoted for Hargreaves that the Mascherano thing really gets to me.

There is no way on this green earth that the lad is worth 17-20m, and if we pay that kind of a fee for an honest, hard working, high energy but limited player then we deserve a good kicking. People have used the arguement that if he's the right player then he's worth the money - rubbish. Firstly Hargreaves aint the only defensive midfielder in the world. Secondly he's not even the best defensive midfielder in the world. Thirdly it seems that theres no other big clubs after him, hence strenghtening our bargaining position. Fourthly the player desperately wants to leave and come to us and has said so publicly. Sixth he's coming off the back of an injury hit season. And last but not least he's roughly 10m over priced. He seems like a good player, and i think he probably would be a good signing, but thats no reason for us to be mugged on the deal. We've missed out on much better players because we wouldnt pay the fee before, sometimes less than the quoted Hargreaves fee, so i dont see why we should break the mould now and pay over the odds. If he was the only player we needed, then maybe, just maybe, but even then no, not for that money.

We're all on cloud 9 following the Roma win but we have to remember we still need a replacement for Giggs and a striker, and if we hand over an extra 7-10m to Bayern than we should then its gonna hurt us when it comes to other areas of the side

Birdy, Ireland you made some excellent points but the main worry for me is that our scouting system is not doing the business. We have quality players coming through in defence and we cannot say the same in the other position. We need to have more target than having to pay over the price on players. There must be a cheaper option than Hargreaves when it comes to a player who is there only to win the ball and pass to the nearer player. Hargreaves is a good player as everybody knows but to pay 17m-20m is just another rip off after the Carrick scenario.
We mainly need to improve our sub players:1 CM, 1 CF and 1 winger.Thus SELL KR and Sylvestre.

Totally agree with Birdy & Mick on Mascherano; he is a class player and I think we missed out there. I know a lot of people on here were knocking him because of his form for West Ham but then these same people tell us not to knock our own players and give them time to settle (Vidic, Evra & Carrick). Go figure.

To much money for Hargreaves, your man Makoun that plays for lille had a great game against us and would probly cost half the money.

Jack, can you name any good City signings or does your mind only have one way of working - negative and anti-United? To define yourself by opposing another club instead of by supporting your own is very sad and bitter.

whether he is worth 17-20m is perhaps debatable, but he is a quality passer of the ball as well as a ball winner not to mention he is english/canadian he would be a great addition to united's midfield. with any team there has to be a balance of creativity and grit heargreaves would be one more piece of a puzzle.

i think he is a decent player but not worth that much for a player who isnt going to do anything amazing. surely there is someone else cheaper or we can get OH cheaper like someone said we are in a good bargaining position

Agree with Mick, OH isn't the player we need, considered that Mascherano were once on Fergie cards, it's a pitty we didn't signed him. He's already proving the scousers that he was a bargain. Hopefully SAF will find a battling midfielder cheaper and better
