MANCHESTER United have the cash to be in the fight to sign the best players in Europe this summer.
The Old Trafford outfit have just announced a new multi-million pound sponsorship deal with Spanish commercial giants Grupo 2002 to promote residential properties throughout the globe under the Royal Resorts Sports and Leisure banner.
The five-year contract emphasises the continuing global appeal of United, who have similar platinum sponsorship deals with Air Asia, Budweiser, Audi and Kumho Tyres and comes on the back of some hugely impressive performances in both domestic and European combat by Sir Alex Ferguson's men this season.
While some critics argue the cash will only be used to help pay off the debts Malcolm Glazer incurred to complete his controversial £780million takeover in 2005, United chief executive David Gill insists there is no question of the Red Devils not being able to compete in the transfer market at the end of the current campaign.
"We will be pitching for players," he said.
"In order to do these (sponsorship) deals we fully understand the need for us to have good teams playing attractive and winning football the Manchester United way. That has always been the case.
"We bought Michael Carrick and Tomasz Kuszczak last summer and we will continue to invest in the team as necessary. The funds are there."
Clinch
Nine points clear at the Barclays Premiership summit, well placed to overcome Lille and clinch a place in the Champions League quarter-finals on Wednesday and favourites to beat Middlesbrough in the FA Cup on Saturday, United are enjoying the kind of success many predicted they would never have under the Glazer family.
Although rebel club FC United continue to enjoy unprecedented support at their level of the non-league pyramid, the 'big' United have steamrollered on.
At a time when many north-west clubs are cutting prices in an effort to attract full houses, Gill reported the Red Devils are still turning away an average of 6,000 supporters a game, even though the capacity at Old Trafford has now expanded to over 76,000.
"If you wind the clock back there was clearly some turmoil prior to the takeover," said Gill.
"Change is always something you have to think about but I spent some time with the family and got to understand what they were all about. They have been true to their word.
"They said they wouldn't change things in terms of how it is run, either with Sir Alex Ferguson on the football side and myself on the non-football side.
"They understand stability is a key requirement in any sports team.
"But they have been there when we have needed them, both in finding money for players and improving contracts but also in an equally constructive way with the various sponsorship deals.
"Obviously, you never know but it has worked out pretty well for everyone; the fans, the staff, the manager and the team.
"The owners are there for the long term, which means we can concentrate on areas where we can improve the club in terms of income rather than just fighting fires.
"Hopefully now we can look forward to a great end to the season."
Elite
While the revolution at Chelsea under Roman Abramovich has propelled the Londoners into the elite league of sponsorship deals, Gill believes United remain a class apart in England, a legacy of their continued worldwide appeal and extraordinary support.
Over 50,000 tickets have already been sold for next week's charity game against a European Select to mark the 50th anniversary of United's entry into European competition and the Treaty of Rome.
The loss of star attraction David Beckham to a knee injury picked up on Real Madrid duty at the weekend is a blow but Gill is hopeful the former England skipper will still be able to make a non-playing appearance on Tuesday, when Ronaldinho will now take top billing.
"It is disappointing," admitted Gill.
"When we made the initial announcement, everyone wanted David to come back. We believe and hope he will still come and be part of the event even if he won't be on the pitch.
"These things happen in football, we have to move on. We have Ronaldinho and there are some other good extra names to announce later this week.
"We are sure it will be a spectacular evening for all concerned."

Yes, it's certainly worked out for me. Finding an extra wad of cash to pay for my season ticket is just what I was hoping for.
I'm sure all the staff that were laid off are also loving the new regime.

My prediction - we will be held to ransom for the vastly overated hargreaves and pay something like 20 million. Ferguson will either sing smiths praises and say he is our new striker or buy a 'forlan' type unknown player. Id love to see someone like simao to come in as well but i doubt it,
Fletcher, Richardson, smith, silvestre should all be sold...
any views....

I wasnt going to as I try and remove myself from all the negative rubbish our fans come out with for these type of stories. To be honest I was half expecting to see Spin Detector (the supposed United fan who only comes out to display negativity to the Glazers). Ah well doesnt surprise me why you lot are so negative, I mean we only just ended Liverpools unbeaten home record!

We're still in the 3 major competitions and looking pretty solid in at least 1 of them (CL and FA looking promissing).
The current crop of players have played some of the most attractive footie in the world this season, and our last 4 purchases (Vidic, Evra, Carrick and VDS) are playing really well.
This is a monster team in the making until anything else is proven, and I can't see us not getting players this summer. And quite frankly...if we get rid of Smith, Richardson and Silvestre and sign 2 new players, I'd be very happy.
There's a good chance of us getting Hargreaves, and then we'll just see who else.
It might be naive, but I just can't see why it's necessary to complain so much about the season and the outlook of the last couple of months.
