GLENN Whelan's brief Bury career will come to an end after Saturday's home game against Southend United.
Manager Graham Barrow has confirmed that the Manchester City midfielder won't be able to extend his loan spell.
Whelan has spent three months at Gigg Lane, interupted by international duty with the Republic of Ireland at the World Under-20's Championship in Dubai.
The Shakers don't have the money to sign the young Irishman permanently and Whelan is anxious to prove himself to Kevin Keegan.
He made his senior debut for the Blues in the UEFA Cup tie against TNS at the start of the campaign.
And after Joey Barton's rapid rise to the top, Whelan obviously feels there is a chance for him as well.
"Any long-term loan had to be sorted out before the end of the year and Glenn, after coming back from Dubai, wanted to keep his options open," said Barrow.
"It's a decision he may regret now but we can't do anything more.
"In fact, the spine of our team is on loan and may not be with us for much longer."
Should Whelan get a chance at City? Have your say.

Dont't remember much about the lad, but now is not the time to be throwing youngsters in. Time for the experienced guys to stand up and be counted.
I can't believe all the moaners on here, stop whinging! You don't think Whelan is good enough, you imply that the senior players are not standing up to be counted when we all know they are playing out of their skins but not winning due to bad luck. Sometimes I wonder whether any of you actually watch or for that matter support City. I don't know why anyone who supports the club would moan so much. I know you think you're entitled to your opinion but tosh to that, get behind the lads or get back to the swamp because you're probably rags anyway!.......KK will get it right, we're not far off the Champs league spot if you look at the table so stop moaning and stop asking to change managers every 30 seconds!!!
"It's a decision he may regret"
I think he would have regretted committing himself to Bury so early, he obviously still wants to try and impress KK before disappearing into the Bury wilderness. Don't give up Glenn.
He is a very good up and coming player BUT agree this not the time to be blooding the youngsters. Shame really as I KK will let him walk at the end of the season. I think he is one of them with contract running out.
I see that if you are critical of KK or City in general then you can be labelled as a Rag!
Perhaps a reminder of some of the reasons why there is a lot of heartfelt critisism from genuine City fans would go some way to explaining their logic.
1. United are doing well year on year and winning trophies/titles. I'll admit it if no one else will but secretly We all wish it was City winning everything in sight year after year.
2. The promise of the team and the football played under KK in Div 1 and last season as well as the excellent start we had to this season.
3. KK talking about top 4/5 finish for this team etc.
4. KK talking about long cup runs in Europe & Carling
5. Our recent run of results. It does not really matter if you think they are the result of bad luck or bad play, suffice to say not what anyone hoped for!
6. Some players looking as though they could not care less if we win or lose as long as they pick up a huge salary.
7. A defense that continues to commit school boy errors.
8. Comments made by KK about adding to the defence during the transfer window followed by a statement to say no one will be drafted in now after all?
9.Simple frustration. After years of roller coaster rides in the Nationwide & the Prem and a thousand dreams raised up to be shattered again and again. We have been promised so much and all felt that a bit of sucess was just around the corner.
Glen is a strong midfielder who has a fair bit of ability-
dont get rid yet KK -
Doncorleonesdad, you're right in what you say, but that doesn't condone City fans sticking the boot in.
The fans have got to realise that to get the club where we all want it to be is going to take time, don't say that we don't have time because it's what is needed like it or not.
For years now some fans and past chairmen have measured City against Stretford Town, but you're always going to be disappointed if you do that, which has engendered a short term, manager sacking mentality that in the long run has only made matters worse.
Think of the last three seasons with KK as a graph, it's climbed at a phenomenal rate, but there will be dips occasionally, and when they happen, panic and calling for the mangers head will not solve things. The graph will climb again, have faith and get behind the players, that's all we can do.
As a Bury fan,I will be disappointed to see Whelan go.If he is realistic,he should be looking to join a club like ours permanently adn work his way up the ladder. He hasn't got a hope of playing for City long term as Keegan favours foreigners.
