Bolton went in all square but should have been ahead as Ivan Campo missed a simple header seven minutes from the break.
Kevin Nolan had given Bolton the lead after 25 minutes with City's defence looking all at sea, but the home side were level two minutes later when Shaun Wright-Phillips scored with a brilliant lob over Jussi Jaaskelainen.
But any hopes that Bolton held of their first away win of the season were shattered as their defence fell apart.
One-way traffic
City took the lead two minutes after the resumption through Sylvain Distin and from then on it was virtually one-way traffic.
Further goals came from Wright-Phillips (56), Nicholas Anelka (58 and 71) and Claudio Reyna (88).
Bolton's only consolation amidst the rout was the fine strike by Campo on the hour from just outside the box, but it could have been so different had he taken advantage of his easier first half chance.
The only blackspot for City was the dismissal of Wright-Phillips after 62 minutes for a bad foul on Simon Charlton, after he had been booked earlier for celebrating his first goal with too much enthusiasm.
It was a disaster for Bolton boss, Sam Allardyce, who thought he had cured the early season defensive frailties and now he will have to look to reinforce his efforts to bring in Belgian defender, Phillipe Leonard.
What do you think of City's performance? Have your say.

About time - Linesman & Ref was a joke however - What do you think? I must admit after the first goal went in I thought here we go again - Still say Fowler was poor - Glad KK took him off - He has simply lost it - His challenging for the ball is simply bis. He does not have the hunger in my "opinion" to see his playing days with the blues - I thought the Sun and swp were spot on. Id give Tiatto a run over the next few games too - Cant fault the elk, They all seemed to lay well although dropping two silly goals - Seaman may have made a bit more on the second goal - but did produce one or two good saves.
PS Does anyone know what that mad song is called just before players walk out of the tunnel?
'ave it you sad trotters!
Claudio Reyna - MAN OF THE MATCH!!!
Sun Jihai along with SWP and Anelka were excellent. Bolton were lucky to keep it down to 6-2. Chelsea here we come....Easy!
Well what can you say after this display. City have got to be the most unpredicatable team in the League. Please can we have a similar performance next week, against you know who !!!!!
Was furious at the SWP sending off at the match, but realised it was justified after watching our 10 seconds of coverage on the Premiership - (United) got nearly 30 mins for a dour 1-0 win v Leeds. I wanted us to beat Bolton today, but I take no pleasure in seeing Sam's men struggling at the foot of the table. Good luck to Villa tomorrow so we can preserve out 4th and hopefully CL spot (today actually). Maybe soon I will get a life.

Fourth place and an obligitory CL spot is there for the taking this season - both L'pool & Newcastle struggle. Look at the teams immediately below us: it is not beyond even City to finish above even Fulham, Brum & S(couldn't sell all your tickets)'ton.
Hope as hope has not been since 1977.

Brilliant TEAM EFFORT !
Thats fat Sam's bacon noshers out of the way - Now for the beetroot noshers - Lets hit the Chelski posers for six too.
I think Richard Frost went to a different game than I did. Bolton's 1st goal was a mile offside, hence City's defence being "all at sea". Campo should never have got to make the header after a blatant foul on Anelka was igored by the ref. City never looked like losing the game and for once turned their dominance into goals. Give credit where it is due!
Best performance of the season by some distance. We look a far better side with Barton in the team, the guy never stops. I can understand that Kev doesn't want to burn him out but a long side Berkovic he's the best midfielder at the club.
Brilliant entertainment, what a difference from the shambolic performance against Wolves and the poor display in Lokeren, the game had everything you want great moves, goals, high energy performance and a rather solid look about the team, emphasised after going down to 10 men with 30 mins left we still managed to keep the top level of our performance.

Take nothing away from them, Bolton are no pushover's as they have some great players in their team Okocha, Jardel and Youri to name 3, but JJ did nothing with Joey snapping at his heels all afternoon, he was never given the room he needed, much better to have Barton in the team than Bosvelt, and the goals were a joy to watch.
<br>
Nico was sensational, Seaman had no chance with Campo's strike or their first goal which was about 10 yards offside, Sun had his best game this season, Reyna pulled all the strings with some superb passing, SWP was brilliant as well and unlucky to be sent off, it was a bad tackle but I am not sure it merrited a straight red card, the first booking was a joke decision by a very poor referee, he should get a life!.

Hopefully the same team and type of display will take to the field next Saturday against Chelsea, though I am sure KK will yet again change a winning side.

People keep saying we have got a dodgy defence, but we also have the BEST attack in the league as we have scored the most goals, and the goals are spread around the team with 3 of our back 4 scoring 2 goals, but we have only missed 2 more than Chelsea and 4 more than the leaders Arsenal, so it is not as bad as the press and pundits will try and make us believe...I will keep the faith, the blues are BACK..
SWPs caution for celebrating his first goal was to say the least unjust and the same dubious referee Steve Bennett does not take the same line of action when a United player celebrates a goal,it smacks of inconsistency and anti mcfc.
Excellent result yesterday, and the table now shows you have scored the most goals this season.
4th place is definately there for the taking this season, but do you really have the squad and mental strength to get there?
We were terrible, six lucky strikes, Seaman should've saved both Bolton goals....But seriously, we were magnificent. Every time we went forward we looked like scoring. Barton made a difference, always hungry for the ball, closing down Okocha etc. Reyna was impressive and I thought Fowler was unlucky not to score and had a good game. Anelka looked classy and SWP was a little hard done to in my opinion - about time the little fella scored a goal or two (the only thing missing from his game). As for the reporter at the game saying "a victory which never looked likely at the interval", did I miss something?
I don't agree that Fowler was poor, he made some brilliant little touches, was all over the pitch and frightened their defence to death. It just goes to show what i have been saying all along, don't play Wanchope with Anelka, as soon as he is sidelined we start scoring again. Don't get me wrong, i think the chop is fantastic, i also think if you didn't play the elk and played Wanchope with someone else we would score plenty. Wanchope and Anelka don't go together! Having said all that, premiership leading scorers, 5th spot, 2nd round UEFA cup, best striker in the country (the elk) and to top it all................Highest attendence in the country this weekend 47,101. Come on City!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Jeff, Salford, The majority of rags supporters think the swamp is inside their telly, that's why they get so much time on the box. These days the more City score the longer they get on ITVs 'the premiership', Watch Granada news tonight and you might just catch the goals again after they have shown the latest installment of the 'Ferdinand circus'. It's a good job Sky don't think the same way as ITV.
Just brilliant 2nd half performance was worth its weight in gold. SWP ran his socks off and was a constant threat shame he got sent off for a nothing challenge, glad to see Distin got off the mark as I think that will help raise his confidence. Anelka was his usual self and the whole team played as a unit which was great to see. Also atmosphere in the South Stand was great school kids behind us chanting City all the way through. I think they were brought in to show the rest of the ground what to do ;-)
Great result, and whatever some may think about the actual performance (fairly good report in the Guardian), 'the table doesn't lie'. It will interesting to see what formation KK puts out next week (I reckon it needs to be 4-5-1).
6-2! What a result, excellent performance! Goals were brilliant, especially Distin's, he took it like a true striker. Shame about SWP's red card, he shouldn't have been booked for his celebration. Hopefully we can keep consistent now in the tough run up ahead. Luv It!
Phil Andrews, it is an interesting point. I hope we dont go 5 at the back, on saturday when dunnie came on and we went to 5, he had nobody to pick up and was like a lost soul.
Chelski will play with a front two and support from the middle, lets keep the shape we have been playing and attack them.
Good result for city, gotta give credit where it's due. Ref went over the top with SWP. Looking at the table, beyond the top three it's anybody's. You must fancy your chances of staying where you are (as much as it pains me to write it).
Superb performances from SWP,Sun,the Elk and Claudio Reyna (footballers with beards are COOL)
Let's hope Joey can cement his place in the centre now and I'm beginning to think Nic should play on his own up front. He's more than capable of firing the bullets and two out and out goalscorers playing together doesn't seem to work.A Peter Beardsley type would be nice.
Bolton probably weren't as bad as the scoreline suggests and Jay Jay is class but their defence was AWFUL (and that coming from a City fan !)
I actually felt really sorry for Jardel at the end...he didn't have a clue what the fans were laughing at.
Let's not get carried away; I think KK was right to say that 6-2 flattered us, we didn't play too well on Saturday. Bolton were woeful and had no fight in them as soon as we made it 2-1, and Jaaskelinen must still be having nightmares.
And what on earth was going on with Jardell with his limp wrists and hands flapping like kippers? I dunno about top heavy, but if he hadn't had his sports bra on he would have had someone's eye out.
@Jericho I think we definitely have the squad to finish at least top six. The problem is that Kev doesn't always pick the best team from the squad available. The mental strength would develop, if the strongest team was picked in the first place. We'd definitely finish at least top six, if we had a good creative midfielder. Like that Eyal Berkovic bloke, he's a player. And we need a bigger better centre half. Like that Lucien Mettomo geezer who plays for Cameroon. He's excellent, and young too. Maybe we could buy someone like him.
Don't want to sound too negative, but we'll have a better idea of where we'll finish when we've played some good teams like Chelsea...
We win 6-2 and the doom and gloom merchants still come on here moaning and groaning. A good game, good atmosphere and to top it all John Inman's brazillian cousin entertaining us on the pitch!
