City's goalden moments

NICLAS Jensen's wonder strike in Manchester City's 2-1 win over Leeds United has been hailed as one of the best goals ever seen at Maine Road.
The Danish wing-back's ferocious volley rocketed into the net. Leeds United's highly rated keeper Paul Robinson had no chance such was the speed, power and precision of the shot.
Jensen's gem has resulted in a nostalgic trip down memory lane for City fans as M.E.N. Sport recalls more memorable net-busters from City sharpshooters.

NEIL YOUNG: v Leicester City 1969 FA Cup Final

YOUNG won the FA Cup for City thanks to a trademark goal. On 23 minutes, Mike Summerbee gathered Francis Lee's quick throw-in and raced down the right with a trademark dribble.
He slipped past David Nish and centred for Young who had time and room to spy his chance. His powerful shot beat England Under 23 keeper Peter Shilton all ends up. Hero Young said he knew he'd scored the moment he let fly.

RODNEY MARSH : v Derby County April 1972

THIS was possibly the finest solo goal the charismatic Marsh scored for City.
He collected a ball in loose play and set off on a mazy run. He left defenders in his wake and twice nutmegged England centre half Roy McFarland. Marsh exuberated typical arrogance and self confidence. He simply kept going before rolling the ball into the net at the Platt Lane end.
It was a magical solo effort and it completed a 2-0 win and lit up Maine Road.

DENNIS TUEART : League Cup Final v Newcastle 1976

THIS one ranks as one of the finest solo goals to grace Wembley's hallowed turf.
Tueart had a tendency only to score spectacular goals and his overhead winner topped the lot. It was third time lucky ' he struck gold with an unbelievable effort after missing two earlier chances. Newcastle defenders could only half-heartedly clear and a cross was met brilliantly by Tueart.
His bicycle kick totally left Newcastle beaten and bewildered ' keeper Mike Mahoney could only look as Tueart's wonder-goal flew into his net.

BRIAN KIDD: v Aston Villa December 1977 PETER Barnes beat defenders and whipped in a perfect near-post cross. Kidd lost his marker and launched himself full length to plant a tremendous diving header into the Villa net.
It was a fantastic goal and completed a 2-0 win ' City moved into fifth spot, eight points adrift of Nottingham Forest.
The goal won Match of the Day's Goal of the Month. Kidd started the move and linked with Dennis Tueart and Asa Hartford who unlocked Barnes. COLIN HENDRY: v Manchester United October 1990

A GREAT move and a super goal from the big Scot. United full back Lee Martin hoofed a hopeful pass into the City half and Alan Harper made a lunge to stifle the danger and diverted the ball to Hendry. He was coming back into his own half after supporting an attack. He did what few players could ever claim ' made a mug of captain fantastic Bryan Robson, rode his challenge and deftly chipped the ball with Robson chasing back.
Hendry then faced Steve Bruce ' a one two with Niall Quinn outfoxed Gary Pallister and Hendry drove home making it 3-1 for City. It finished 3-3 but Hendry's goal was the big talking point. GEORGI KINKLADZE: v Swindon Town February 1997

THIS goal was a response to being dropped by new manager Frank Clark.
Blues were awarded a free kick 35 yards out ' it was 0-0 and fans were wondering where a goal was going to come from.
Kinkladze's cultured left foot let fly and though Swindon arranged a wall there was nothing they could do as he skilfully bent the ball around the side of them.
It arrowed into the top left hand corner like a missile. The ground erupted and Kinkladze's expression was a mixture of anger, defiance and joy. It was the perfect spur in a 6-0 win and Clarke never dropped him again. KEVIN HORLOCK : Play-off final v Gillingham May 1999

ONE of the most important goals in City's history ' not a classic but it called for a cool head and Horlock obliged.
With just 17 seconds of normal time left, Shaun Goater fired a shot.
The rebound fell to Horlock on the edge of the area where Gillingham defenders, who were on the brink of reaching the first division, tried in vain to close him down.
It would have been easy to snatch his shot but the midfielder coolly drew back and side-footed a goal of slide-rule precision to throw City a lifeline ' which they took. Horlock only had a split second to make up his mind and then take his chance. EYAL BERKOVIC: v Norwich January 2002

THIS was the mercurial Berkovic at his brilliant best. His typical individual brilliance had the Canaries all at sea as he picked a ball up in his own half and dribbled through towards the Norwich box.
Berkovic gave the impression he was begging defenders to commit themselves to a challenge.
Many did and ended up embarrassed ' he edged closer to the six yard box before dropping his shoulder and dribbling past three more defenders. Berkovic looked up and drilled an unstoppable left foot drive past the City keeper. PAULO WANCHOPE : v Preston February 2002

THE Costa Rican can always deliver a speciality goal but few will better this effort. He showed he can crack a ball from distance with maximum venom.
Acting on advice from Ali Benarbia to make more use of his shooting boots, Wanchope duly obliged with a 25-yard screamer.
Preston defenders backed off sensing the ball would be worked wide but Wanchope connected beautifully ' his long-range drive flew in off the post and bar to send home fans into raptures. This one was straight out of the top drawer. ALI BENARBIA : v Crewe March 2002

THE fans claim Ali is magic and this goal seemed to confirm it in a crucial 3-1 win during City's Division One Championship campaign.
He carried the ball to the edge of the Crewe box ' looked up and was alert enough to spot an opportunity few players in the world would have the skill or genius to attempt.
Benarbia had wrong-footed defenders and weighed the situation up using a decoy runner.
Another glance and he then curled the ball around three defenders and beyond the reach of a bemused keeper. The ball zipped into the top corner ' it was a great goal from the man who went on to be City's Player of the Year.

Have we missed your favourite goal out?

It could be Stevie Mac's goal against Spurs in the '81 Cup Final, Kinky's mazy run aginst the Saints or Dickov's heart-stopping strike against the Gills, or many, many more. Set the record straight by having your say

Shaun Goater against man utd in the 3-1 win last season the goat who many man utd fans tell me is the worst player they have ever seen, chipped the worst goalkeeper in the game to round off an amazing day for every city fan

Niclas Jensen's goal last year came a close second. But the best ever was when Rodney Marsh dribbled the ball around what seemed to be the entire Newcastle team at a Maine Road evening match (around 1973 or 1974) to make it 2-0 at the North stand end. Anyone else remember that one?

Just to clarify things re Jim Melrose goal,it was against Notts County into the North stand goals,me in corner of old Kippax(GK stand)saw it at the time but never since,(bit like Mackens against us)remember like it was yesterday as I was with my church going neighbours & didnt realize I was effin n jeffin for about 5 minutes after,I,ll never forget the look on their faces, but the goal was that good it still eases the embarrasment.

Tommy Hutchison in the '81 Cup Final. The second one. Classic city comedy.

I think Nicolas Anelka's goal against Blackburn Rovers this season was one of the best goals ever. He slipped it through the keepers legs at the tightest angle! What a goal!

Terry Phelan's goal against Spurs in the FA cup @ Maine Road has got to be the best! Think it was 93/94? He took the ball off TC right outside the box then ran the full length of the pitch an slotted it. The resulting celebrations led to a smacked arse off the FA as everyone invaded the pitch.

Bishop - 40-yarder to Whitey - Whitey - first-time, half-volley into the box - Hinchy (steaming forward with superb pace) - smacks a brilliant header past a startled Leighton. Definitely the best goal I've seen and made even better by the commentator (he's a left-back, remember!?) and even more so by the look of sheer ecstasy on Hinchy's face. Priceless!

Two goals from the 1970s stand out. Tueart's 1975/6 goal in the League Cup 4-0 demolition of Utd when he ran from almost half way line to shoot past hapless Paddy Roache - much better that Giggs' goal against Arsenal. The other was bullet header from Dave Watson against Ipswich - 1977/78 - went so fast could hardly see it.

Has there ever been a more insane moment in any bodies life than Paul Dickov's 94th minute equaliser at Wembley?

Please could you settle an arguement between hubby and wifie. We have a nephew who is in the pro footie stream and we got to talking on teams etc, I used to be an avid City supporter when I was younger and child free and I'm sure you had a player called Trevor Brooking or Brooks around 1979/81 was he a goalkeeper my nephew is and this is how the arguement started. many thanks Pauline Robinson.

I didnt miss many games between 69 and 82 and there were obviously alot of brilliant goals many of which have been mentioned here.

One of many that stands out because of the circumstances was a header that Dave Watson scored against derby from the edge of the penalty area. He met a corner at full gallop and the ball hit the back of the net like a Bobby Charlton volley. City were losing 2 - 1 with 2 minutes to go. Watson scored the winner in the 91st minute. Must have been late 70,s.

Paul Dicov's tying goal against the Gills was the most important goal in City's history.
Had Gillingham gone up that year and City been forced to spend a second season in Division Two, who knows what would have happened to the club.

What about Terry Phealan's goal against spurs in the F.A cup quarter final, if it had'nt have "kicked off" afterwards they would still be showing it on sky t.v now!
