Q.
THE first question everyone asks is if Peter Taylor couldn't fit the job into his Championship side's schedule, how can you hope to do two jobs?
A. If you ask Peter Taylor whether he could do both jobs he would say yes and that he has been doing so successfully for the past few years.
It is that same old thing, the perception of people outside football and in the mass media that you can't do it. He has done it.
I have always lived my life doing things for the right reasons and saying what those reasons are and then standing up to be counted.
I was asked the question would I be interested in the job and I said `yes,' then I was asked if I thought the timings would get in the way of my job at City and the answer was `no' and finally I asked myself would there be benefits for City and the answer was `definitely.'
Q.
So exactly how long will you be away from City while performing possible England Under-21 duties?
A If and when the job is finalised, it will be only two days or so away from the squad to face Spain being picked so there is no scouting involved for the game next week because that would be physically impossible. In any case, the squad is reasonably settled and most of them play in the Premiership.
Anyone who comes in to manage the Under-21s is coming in to do a steering job. It is a bit like someone being installed as full England manager tomorrow - the chances are that you would choose 95 per cent of the same players.
The first game is therefore just a two-day get-together. There could be a game in March which would be scheduled for an international week when we at City do not have a game and involves a maximum five days from Tuesday until Saturday.
If I was involved in that game, and there is talk of me not being involved or being involved for just two days on the Friday and the Saturday, then it would not impact on the club because we would have maybe half-a-dozen of our players away on international duty and historically we have always given the others a break.
So the most I would be away in total before the summer is two days next week and another two in March.
Q.
Are you saying then that the job would not involve any scouting or take you away on evenings when you could be looking for new players for City?
A. As regards the scouting issue, as I said, the squad that was in place under Peter Taylor and reached the finals is hardly going to change at all. As soon as this Premiership season ends I will do all the things to prepare us for the lead into the summer transfer window opening and there is nothing to do with regard to the international question.
England Under-21's first game is on June 11 and the final is on June 24 so that covers a period when managers are generally on holiday and in any case I will always be there on the end of a phone if the club needs me.
Q.
Do you still maintain that the Under-21 job has more positives than negatives given that there is perceived to be a club versus country row in full flow?
A. I believe it will benefit my footballing education to do the job. There is not a manager of my age and with my limited experience that I feel cannot benefit from working with the likes of Theo Walcott, Nigel Reo-Cocker and Tom Huddlestone to name but three. You cannot fail to benefit from doing that.
I don't think that there is a split between club and country. All that has happened is that the FA made an offer to me in regard to the job and the club obviously and quite rightly needed to have assurances.
They needed to know the level of involvement and have assurances over the calls on my time. When they found those out they put one or two limitations on what would be acceptable to the club. That's fair enough. Hopefully a balance will be struck by the club and Football Association and we will proceed and by the end of next summer Manchester City will have a manager with more knowledge than he has got now and one who has forged relationships with the best young players England have at their disposal.
You never know when that is going to be beneficial in the future. I will also get to know the cream of the European talent.
Q.
Do you understand the anger of City fans at hearing you wanted to take up the offer?
A. Yes, I can understand the fans being up in arms at the thought of their manager being dragged away but perhaps their perceptions are based on not knowing the full facts.
After the game on Sunday I went back to Steve Wigley's place to discuss how things had gone against Southampton and he called in the chip shop.
There were some City fans in there who were happy that we had won but then put the question to Steve about whether I was going to do the England Under-21 job and how I would manage my time.
He asked them if they knew exactly how little time would be involved away from Manchester City and they were surprised when he told them.
All managers in every league are hard working but I probably put in more hours watching matches and players than most.
I know I cannot afford to take my eye off the ball at City.
We are not good enough and I am not good enough to be distracted just one per cent and if I thought doing the England job would create that situation then I simply wouldn't do it.
If I thought there would be a problem, I would have held up my hands and said thank you but `no, that won't allow me to do my job properly.' Manchester City are, and always will be, my number one priority and in my own mind I am absolutely sure that me being involved with the cream of this country's young players can only benefit this club in the long run.
I am not stupid. I weighed up the situation carefully before I decided that the two jobs would not overlap.
Q.
So, for instance, if there is a night between now and the end of the season when there are two games taking place, one which involves a City target and one a potential Under-21 player, you would go to the former?
A. Absolutely. There is no question that I would go and watch the City target. People who think that I will be sat there at matches thinking `oh he'd be a good one for the Under- 21s' is not giving me enough credit.
City is absolutely paramount for me and that is how it always will be. I am a good at prioritising and, in any case, I will be accessible to City all the time I am away with England in the summer - and I have to say that I would have been going to the tournament anyway.
Q.
And what about your assistant Steve Wigley, There was talk of him being part of the England set-up with you?
A. STEVE may be involved in the summer but not during the season in anyway whatsoever. People have to remember that I am not in every day as it is, especially if I have been abroad scouting.
It is only a handful of days I have missed but this would be no different. Steve will take training on those days.
The players don't think `where is he?' and sometimes it does them good not to see my face or hear my voice.
Brian Clough used to miss training and we'd be wondering whether he had gone somewhere to find a replacement for one of us.
Q.
It is likely that the Football Association will make the Under-21 job permanent after the summer Euro championships. Do you have any intention of applying for it and would winning the championships sway you?
A. My plan is to take the team and try to win the tournament and that wouldn't put any added pressure on me to apply for the job if it is advertised as a full-time post.
The FA have said they wouldn't offer me the job on a full-time basis in the summer. If the chairman wants my word that I wouldn't apply or resign to take that full time England Under- 21 role, then I will give it him. This post is for the summer only.
If City fans don't know that I will always put this club first, then they don't know me and they should by now. Anyone who wants to sit back from now until the end of the season and put every defeat down to the fact that I was away for two days needs to get real.
I didn't see the speculation get in the way on Sunday when we went out and played as well as we have done at home for a while. The eye wasn't off the ball then and it won't be in future.
Q.
Are you disappointed that there has been such a furore over what you see as an honour?
A. The approach was leaked to the media in London when it should have been all settled first. All the reservations could have been sorted out and then, if and when an agreement was reached, announced as a package.
What has happened is that it has been leaked to some papers who have already put their own slant on things and it is a better story to say that there is a wedge between City and the FA than it is to say what a great honour it is for the manager and for the club.
We had a great feel-good factor around this club before Christmas when Micah Richards was picked for England, so why shouldn't we be proud that another employee is wanted by the national team. I am not stupid. I thought about what the FA were offering before I said I wanted to do it. I didn't just grab it, say this suits me and pull the ladder up. I thought about it from the club's point of view before Stuart Pearce's point of view, because that is how I work and what I am like and, hopefully, fans will understand that.
What is your reaction to the interview? Have your say.

Where is our new striker???
sort out one job before you think about two, we are not sure of staying in this league yet by any means you have a big job at City Stu don't let ego get the better of you or you could end up with no job!!!!!
Get Simpson in as manager in time for the next round of the cup, his knowledge of Preston guarantees we get through to the quater-finals, we get a successful manager who knows what he's doing, who knows how a team should play, and who is hungry, aswell as having an affinity for the club and not just preocuppied with his own long-term england prospects. Time to go Pearce, you are not kidding anyone anymore with your cheeky-cockney-chappie routine, you're a selfish, incompetent, arrogant man, GOODBYE.
An excellent interview, from which SP comes out of it with a whole heap of credit in my book. Would there be such a fuss made if Pearce took 4 days off work because of an illness between now and the summer - I think not. Let him get on with it and stop moaning. We are a crap team to watch now, who sometimes get good results and sometimes bad and we will continue to be a crap team in future - it's got bog all to do with him managing the U-21's! He's an honest bloke and I for one wish him all the best.
I can see this situation going 2 ways (1) Now this is the best ever scenario ! City DO have a secret buyer waiting in the wings to see if City maintain Premier status, and seize the SKY windfall intact (thats why no money has been spent, unlike other clubs). The new investor wants his own manager so SP knows this and looks for a way out. The U21 job allows SP to keep reputation intact (no sacking). The club goes on to unparalled domestic and european success !!. OR (2) There STILL is no investor. The board will not release sufficient funds to allow transfers and our best players may well leave in the summer. As a result of successive knock backs from the board, SP decides there is no point staying at a club where nothing will be done and no support received. He then looks for other employment, ie the FA. Again reputation is intact (no failure, just progression to national setup), either way SP goes. I am amazed at the over the top reaction of most City fans on this site. He has only pledged 4 days to the national cause, cut him a little slack please. Most importantly remember being a City fan is for life. Being a paid employee of the club has its life span as well !!I wonder which one is the longer ?.
Pearce has done a very good job at City in trying financial circumstances. I say do the under 21 job Stuart, and I do have every trust in your word that it is over after the tournament. I will then welcome you back to City to continue the first class job you have been doing. On the basis of this interview I see no reason for him not to do the job. Good luck Stuart and lets push on up the table, and make the wingers eat there words.
Great interview Chris â€" and nice to be put in the picture, rather than wading through speculation et al. Thank you.
The blue plastic seat mob seem to be the only ones moaning abt this, maybe they should put their energy into supporting the team at home games, half empty,i say half empty stadium, call themselves city fans,,,,,,,,,,,shame on u all !!!
What a bunch of tools. the opinions of ill informed so called fans will have no bearing on Pearce's decision. He will be U-21 Manager make no bones about it. And if Wardle is stupid enough to deny City this opprtunity to raise it's profile further then he's a bigger tool than you lot.
Enough of all this ,who the hell are we going to get in the transfer window ,the way its going NOBODY
OK then fair enough he's explained things responsibly so lets just cut him some slack.
If it was my son managing City and then given the England U21's job I'd be well chuffed.
The only reason I think that he's labelled rubbish as a City manager is because he's not got the tools to work with ie NO MONEY. In the dire circumstances he's done well!!Better players give better performances and give better options ie in the tactical area where SP so often gets slated. Give him a break! - I'm not looking through rose coloured specs at this but I think we should all wait till safety is assured, let the money come in in the summer and see if there is an investor. When all this comes in then we can see a lot better what direction the club is going in.
I think a measured approach is needed. So please any headless chickens out there just chill out.
1,2,3.........
I think some of the people on here are forgetting how bad Pearce is as a manager. Saying he has now money. Would you give him any money if you were chairman looking at his signings so far?! Samaras £6M, Corradi £1.5M. Managers are judged on their signings and so far they have been rubbish. PEARCE OUT!
He shouldn't be commenting on it until the board have came to a decision. He seems to have acted thoroughly unprofessional and I imagine that Wardle is rightly annoyed at being undermined in such a way. Sam Johnson got it right: "Patriotism is the last refuge of a scoundrel"
Never mind the England Under-21 job, Chris Bailey, The Pope's just announced he has a son on your website! Talk about a scoop falling into your lap! Get on the case!
How about another article and this time interview the invisble board!
I agree he would physically only be away for a short time, which would make little or no difference to City. But the planning, and preparation would take longer, at a critical time. And he hasn't got a settled way of playing yet, or strikers who score more than once in a blue moon. But what bothers me today is: Did this interview take place during working hours, when Pearce should have been doing everything in his power to recruit new players? It seems the latest targets, Mido and Konchesky, would only be available if their clubs get a replacement. So Pearce needs to look elsewhere, not witter on about himself to anyone who will listen. Get your priorities right, man. At least until Thursday.
psycho stade de manchester do us a favour and keep your pointless and innaccurate opinons to yourself, tool. Having read the interview the one glaring fact that shines out for me is the fact that this is all about stuart pearce not about city. If he is only going to be away for a couple of days exactly what is he going learn if that is the purpose improving him as a manager? and ask youself this do you really want the so called cream of englands young talent being shown how to play the style of football that we have to endure at eastlands??? Bad judgement from the FA, bad judgement from Pearce - and worringly bad judgement from the fans backing pearces choice, shem on you. Good points raised by dkpmanc in levenshulme.
blimey, I'm in shock.... I've only been reading these message boards for seven years, I've never seen the MUEN actually do a real interview before; gosh, it's almost like proper journalism, well done ! I was sceptical before but fair do's to Pearce, i'm willing to back him on this one and wish him well for it. I do, however, feel he isn't up to the job at City and the failure to get rid of corradi and bring someone else in, even by 30th Jan, is testament to how poor our management/board set up is. BTW, Nefyn Blue & others, as I keep telling you all, there is NO takeover. It was all a smokescreen for the AGM and those of us in the know, whom the MUEN keep censoring, know the FACTS. Wardle OUT.
It saddens me that there a LOT of alleged City fans who put a lot of effort into shouting and ranting and criticising the club seemingly without letting a single brain cell influence what they say. The story was in The Independent on saturday and it stated that the job was only until the summer. It was obvious to me then that the squad had already been assembled and i knew i could TAKE IT ON TRUST that Stu would not let it get in the way of his City commitments.
are we gonna sign mido or what pearce??
are we gonna sign anyone mr pearce???
to all the moaners, on the bbc website , taylor has said that there is no problem doing the u21 part time, he managed just fine, he did not resign because he couldn't manage the 2 roles, which is hat i've posted previously. and as some people have stated, it is a minor role required as he would only be away for a few days.
SP puts across his case very well. The time required by the U21 role is very modest and SP is in any case a man of his word - he will always put City first. I think that the experience gained, at international level, will be of great benefit to him and hence of great benefit to Manchester City. It also raises the profile of City and our manager, and again this can only be a good think. Let's support the man and be proud that OUR manager has been chosen for this important role.
Forget all this nonsense its not important right now. Are we going to sign anyone and if so who? I reckon if we do it will be de cler and alves with no arrival of the much needed creative flair. This may I add is a total guess but its more fun than this saga which I find totally boring, come on lads lets go into transfer frenzy and enjoy the last two days guessing if and who, you know its fun we do it every transfer window.
.. and whilst Stuart Pearce created an amusing distraction, the transfer window closed.
In the time he has taken for this interview we could have had a new player in - distractions I think so!!
manchester has just been chosen for the new super casino site at sports city i am led to believe that the guy who owns the casino is the guy who is looking to invest in MCFC,interesting we may have to watch this space!!!!!!!!
