Rumour mill: Ireland seeking better deal

STEPHEN Ireland is reportedly chasing an improved contract at City, or a move to another club.

The gifted midfielder has hired Willie McKay - Joey Barton's agent - to conduct the negotiations, report The Guardian.

The Republic of Ireland international has just broken back into City's first-team and scored the match-winner against Sheffield United on Boxing Day.

Dont know the ins and outs of his current contract. It may not be that difficult to improve the one hes got right now.
Ireland is a promissing gifted player, with loads of talents and already an international. Although he takes a bit more time to gain his starting place, hes still young and I think he will get there soon. As for mentioning his new agent, I get the suspiscion it is to provoce some angry reactions on here. McKay has a certain reputation, indeed, though it still has not much to do with Ireland wanting an improved contract ... yet.

Pearce doesnt even like him so he has no chance. He's on about 3k a week as well and obviously dabo, hamann et al with all the more quality than him are on a touch more than that!!!

I hate McKay

Offer him to West Ham as a sweetener for Benayoun...see ya Stevie

Gifted player, one for the future but still some doubts in some departments. Undoubtedly the best player in the team for picking and delivering a killer pass. There is of course a slightly different angle. Ireland I'd guess is on a very basic wage. It's natural for employees at any company to look around at other employees and compare themselves and wages. My guess is that Ireland looks around at Sun, Reyna, Hamann, Sinclair and others and thinks I'm a current full international and contribute as much as these fellas maybe it is time I was paid a little more. And then of course there is the Mckay amplification factor and probably the biggest factor I won't even bother trying to guess what he is thinking, I think we all know!

he has not been a consistent performer and has only shown gimpses of his talent when it counts, so he should have a contract which reflects this. If he thinks he is worth more elsewhere then good luck to him, and goodbye

Agents should be taken out of football, they are pathetic. As for his improved contract i would say earn a place in the team first,he has a hell of a long way to go before he can call himself a regular,he is always injured.

Obviously those advocating that he leave haven't seen him play. Give him a couple more seasons if he doesn't break into the team then get rid. He clearly is a gifted footballer, but obviously not very bright if he's hiring Willie McKay. His main problem is that he is lightwieght, but it would be bad business to get rid of the best footballer we've produced since Paul Lake. SWP and Richards are athletes, this lad has a football brain without the frame.

We shouldn't do deal with McKay or any of his affliates.

Sorry you are going about it the wrong way, play a full season in the first team, be a regular consistent performer, score a few goals, then you wont even need to ask for a pay rise city will offer it.
under the present circumstances i would tell him the above if not acceptable then transfer him, employing mckay will only get the boards back up, big mistake the way you have gone about it.

well stevie, if you feature in wins in the cup on saturday against the owls and you play your part in wins for the next 3 January fixtures - Bolton, Blackburn, and Gooners then we should think about it... and the remaining Jan fixtures will not be easy but theses are the teams we have to take points off so if you proove your talent and get us 12pts from those games then you'll be worth your pay rise... just ask willie..!!!

Sure I read that the minimum wage for a premiership star is 9k per week !!!! Why are all these deals played out in the press ???? I think SP should remind Ireland of the legend that is Dickson Etuhu - too big for City, wanted a bigger club - ended up at Preston then a big money move to high flying Norwich !! Really needs to take a reality check and realise he's not a star and never will be with his attitude and that Mckay.

I really hope Stevie Ireland has a future at City with an extended run in the team he can only improve. Not sure that Pearce fancies him that much though. Im sure he cant be on that good a deal but I'd give him an improved one now and a much better one if he dropped Mckay.

if he or any other player doesnt wanna play for city get rid he always injured so why should the club reward him with a better offer and he injued again at the moment he should make comments when he is regularing playing in the team then he got a reason to ask

To support my previous comments is that what stinks about this is he scores a goal , has good comments said about him and then starts looking for an improved contract or a move (allegedly)....as said by another fan..get playing in the side ..contribute regularly and then come to the table..and look to bulk up a bit...cos no matter how gifted he is with a pass..if you are lightweight then you aint gonna cut it in the premiership..Would love him to stay but anyone who employs Mckay is looking to upset the applecart

It makes me laugh that fans have a go at Reyna and Hamman for always being injured, yet call for Ireland to be playing when he too is injury prone. Just because he is a home grown player he should not be exempt from criticism. He is an excellent passer of the ball but gets caught in possession too much. Given his injury record so far and the fact he is hardly the complete midfielder, if we got a substantial offer for him we should possibly consider selling him IF this assits in gettin in a QUALITY midfielder.

Boring pack of lies before everyone starts slaggin him

Stephen Ireland is very gifted, and I like watching him play. He is seeking a new deal rather prematurely...how many games has he played this season? And why did he have to hire Mckay...not a wise move. Footballers, eh?

IMHO, I think he is worth a better contract. Good player as we all know, though does need to bulk up a wee bit. More worrying is the news I've just seen that Graham Poll is reffing City v Sheff W on Sunday. That's us out of the Cup then, eh? All together now, "Oh Graham Poll, is a..."

Clearly whether he's worth more depends on what he's on now. As for agents, let's face it, who wouldn't like to get paid more.

That said, it's starting to feel like the wheels are coming off a little...not hard to imagine going into Feb without Distin, Richards, Barton or Ireland...which would be interesting (Hmm!)...esp as the outgoing Chairman only wants to spend just enough to keep us in the Division ahead of selling up.

get lost ireland. city should get rid if he and makay don t backdown. why are we still doing business with makay

Report This Reply

Don't sell him, because we just can't gamble on getting better in this window. He probably does deserve a better contract, but it's really annoying that just because he's played a few good games he decides to hand in an ultimatium. Also, regarding him being lightweight - I don't agree. Yes he's scrawny, but I've not once seen that affect his game - he's always up for the tackles and I think the physical aspect of his game should get more praise - I for one rarely see him muscled off a ball. The kid has great potential - lets see if he can fulfil it

Big mistake Steve. when you prove it you will earn it.
Another mistake is to use
our man Mackay!!!!
