Why Thatcher's a changed man

BEN Thatcher returns to the football spotlight on Monday night knowing that his every movement and challenge will be scrutinised by television's prying eyes.

The Welsh international's notorious elbow-led charge at the unsuspecting Portsmouth midfielder Pedro Mendes has found a place in the annals of soccer infamy.

For weeks after the event 30-year-old Thatcher was the centre of debate on both news and sports pages, every one of his previous misdemeanours was lavishly dissected and analysed and out of the woodwork came those seeking to have their extra pound of flesh.

Two police forces were simultaneously investigating the player's on-field actions - without charge - the Blues suspended him and fined him a club record amount and the FA hauled him down to London to answer for actions that he probably couldn't explain and looked worse on each viewing.

While all that was going on around him Thatcher, as mild, friendly and engaging a character away from the field as he is a fearsome competitor on it, was attempting to get on with his family life, relieved that Mendes and suffered no ill-effects and clearly sorry for what he had done.

Now Thatcher, who has only been sent off once in his two and bit years at City - and that for nothing more sinister than two bookable offences in a pre-season friendly in China - is likely to return to City's starting side against Middlesbrough on Monday and, according to the man who has worked with him every day since the infamous incident, Stuart Pearce, the left back is something of a changed man.

Apprehension

If he is selected to start against Middlesbrough there will, of course, be some apprehension for Thatcher but far better he makes his comeback at home in front of fans who, while not condoning what he did, will at least be more sympathetic than those of other clubs.

Throughout the whole affair Thatcher, apart from a letter of apology to Mendes, has kept a dignified silence.

That has been in stark contrast to some of the things written and said about him. In some quarters he was almost painted as evil, a far cry from the man that his team-mates have rallied around and who is genuinely popular among his peers.

Since his eight-match ban began, Thatcher has been his manager's dream. He has not missed one single training session, has been the first into work each morning and has been vibrant and supportive on the training ground.

Even so, it is hard to believe that the events of Wednesday, August 23 at the City of Manchester Stadium will not have left some kind of mark.

Boss Pearce believes that the Mendes affair has changed Thatcher but nevertheless is sure that the defender is ready to play.

"Ben has worked very hard in the time that he's been off the field,'' said the manager.

"He's had no time off. I've not said to him, `take a week off here and a week off there'. He's worked as hard as he possibly could on the training pitch and been good around the place.

Difficult

"When you've got nothing to look forward to at the end of the week it's very, very difficult as a player. But credit to him he's grafted away really well and it's pleasing for us to have another player back.''

Pearce, whose pastoral care for his players has a glowing reputation, has not spent hours in deep, analytical conversation with his left-back but the pair have spent enough time together for the manager to know that Thatcher's remorse has been genuine and that he will be able to handle coming back on to centre stage.

"I think Ben is very disappointed, as I've said from the outset," continued Pearce. "Speaking with him the morning after the Mendes incident I knew exactly the remorse that was in his face and in his heart.

"He's got to learn by that and make sure it doesn't happen again, that's for sure. So we'll see how things pan out as time goes by.

"I'm sure the furore surrounding the incident must have got to him. I don't think any individual could have gone under that kind of spotlight and be totally oblivious to it.

"Ben's got a reputation of being a tough-tackling left-back and sometimes people perceive you as what you do on a football pitch as the same as you are off it - and being totally oblivious to any criticism you might get.

"That often isn't the case and certainly isn't the case with Ben. He's been affected by it but he's handled it pretty well, but you know the testing time is how he learns from it."

Thatcher, who played in a private rearranged reserve fixture against Bury yesterday is likely to be preferred to Stephen Jordan, who has felt the ire of his manager for recent under-par performances, at left-back against Middlesbrough on Monday night.

The Blues number three will be warmly welcomed back into the match day dressing room by his manager and team-mates who believe he has served his sentence and paid his penalty in terms of a battered reputation.

Pearce will be hoping, too, that City's fans welcome him back to the fold, for they have plenty of things to occupy their minds other than Thatcher's rehabilitation into first-team football.

What do you think? Have your say.

He's a liability - get rid, and try to pocket a few (and only a few) quid before he's released for nowt at the end of the season (if I remember correctly, his contract's up then?).

If the option is between Jordan and Thatcher, then for City's sake it has to be Thatcher.

On the pitch, the guy's a nutter, and not very good, we need to get rid of him. Perhaps if Pearce had shown some 'pastoral care' to Jordan we might not even be talking about this hooligan playing for us again.

This may be harsh, but this looks like a serial thug who has been caught, on CCTV, and made to admit his crimes in public, shedding crocodile tears. The list of previous victims who have not had justice is lengthy, and it seems the older and slower he has become, the more violent the over-reaction to facing skillful players. Mendes of course was responsible for those 2 ridiculous shots at Fratton Park last Season to beat us. So who does Barney Rubble target the next time the teams meet? Worse than that, all the time this hooligan has been taking his punishment, he has been allowed to train with the first team, during which time every forward or midfield player has mysteriously suffered an "avoidable injury". Where does Trabelsi play? Oh right midfield, just where that man is waiting. He got him twice by the sound of it. On behalf of all bruised City players, all embarrassed City fans, and dozens of past victims, I vote that this fool be led to the nearest train station, and given a one way ticket to Newcastle, home of the world's worst defenders. They deserve each other.

what's done is done. jordan needs a rest, get thatcher in for boro.

The return of Thatcher to the squad will do nothing to lift the gloom that is consuming whats left of the fans fading support.Thatcher has never been anything but a run of the mill very average player.

Still say stick with Jordan.Thatcher is and always will be a footballer of limited talent.

I've heard that Thatcher is coming on to the pitch on Monday in a cage, and he's got a step ladder to help him hit the opposing winger. And there's going to be a tag match for the first fifteen minutes when Thatcher will pair up with Andy Morrison to take on John Craggs and Stuart Boam of Boro. And the crowd will all clap and sing "Thatcher, Scratcher, coming right at'cher..." And WWF will make a bid for him in the next transfer window. And Kent Walton will do the match commentary. And Johnny Two Rivers will be on the bench. Anyway, that's what I heard...

I like the bit that says he only got sent off once for two bookable offences on a pre season tour in China - cos didn't that guy end up with a punctured lung ? And this was just a few weeks before the Mendes incident - seems to me like he was out of control.
It will take A LOT for him to win support back.

While I was absolutley disgusted at the challenge by Ben Thatcher, we as City fans, can only stand by him. He has served his sentence both served by the club and the FA. Yes, he is going to get stick from opposition fans but it is up to us to show our support for him while he has our colours on. BlueTV - he is no more of a liability than the inept Stephen Jordan. At least Thatcher has a bit of pace to enable him to keep with the attacking player and at least he isn't scared of putting a foot into the tackle. Best of luck, Ben.

HE'S NO GOOD. GET RID!

absolute disgrace and totally inept full back, I cant believe Pearce is backing him or the club, stick him in the youth team and get rid ASAP.

Not good enough as a player, if he and Jordan both played they wouldn't be half the player that Glyn Pardoe was. Shocking purchase and I'd get rid asap. Once touted as a possible England player before switching to Wales? What a joke , my mates at college were better defenders. A shocking defender in a shocking squad.

Neither Thatcher or Jordan are the answer to our leftback slot however when in the team both are being made to look worse players than they actually are due to the fact we do not have a genuine left sided midfielder who can help with the work load occasionally, and please dont offer Miller as the answer because he isn't even close, praying Beasley comes good.

Given Jordan's recent form is a welcome return but lets hoped the "changed man" claim applies to his positional play and distribution too... LB should be a priority in January... if not might be worth moving Distin there full time, Micah to CB and Trabelsi or Onuha at RB... If Distin is going it prepares us for that.

BlueTV.

We wouldn't be pocketing anything for this muppet. Still, a bit more clearing of the dead wood

He's no better that Jordan so let's not get too exited about his return.

Soulboy, Kent Walton & Billy Two River's? Now you're really showing your age. Though I agree entirely with your comment's, I suggest that Les Kellet would probably fit in better with the bunch of comedians on show last Saturday.

Welcome back Ben, c'mon now and give everything (except elbows) for City!!

Report This Reply

I like good strong tackles from a full back, but that does not mean he has to play dirty to achieve this.
With the options that CITY have on the books for left back then Thatcher gets my vote, but it will be hard for him , not everyone is going to give him a big welcome back, and he has a lot to prove, before he can be forgiven.

Report This Reply

He was rubbish before the Mendes-incident and I have no clue why during his suspension, he has become a better leftback than Jordan. Both not the best of leftbacks, but we're stuck with both so I would keep on playing Jordan. SP should give him his confidence. Thatcher is on his way anyway end of the season, so why bother.

Much rather have Thatcher in the team than Jordan... His form has been shocking!
