The Manchester City midfielder now has until midday on Monday to answer the charges of improper conduct and/or bringing the game into disrepute.
The charge was levelled at the 24-year-old yesterday and he originally had until 6pm last night to respond.
An FA disciplinary commission will hear the case after Merseyside Police decided against taking action over complaints from supporters. But Barton's club feel he should not be facing any charges at all.
Club spokesman Paul Tyrrell said: "It is deeply disappointing that the Football Association have decided to charge Joey Barton with improper conduct.
"The player accepts that some elements of his behaviour following the game with Everton were ill-advised and he apologises to anybody who may have felt offended.
"We believe the FA should have noted he behaved in a light-hearted manner.
"Joey wishes to thank the many Evertonians, City supporters and general football fans who have contacted the club this week with messages of support." Tweet

If it was rooney he would have already got life sentence but it is not so it will take an eternity and then probably he would get a small fine which he will pay with 3 days work......
is justice the same for everyone???
Fo to the FA website and contact them direct to let them know your feelings.
Seems to me that the FA have know realised that they maybe making a mistake here (pressure from both the media and public option). I expect them to do a u-turn and just tell Barton that next time he will suffer and hand him a suspended charge. Maybe they will charge Zokora with diver.
Norbert Bugeja you should take those red coloured spectacles off for at least five seconds and wake up to reality. Do you really think Rooney is a fine role model for kids? Your club does have a pretty bad track record. Those who live in glasshouses should stick to wearing jester hats. When will the FA be charging themselves for their incompetence in either overlooking or not checking Newcastle Uniteds submission and treatment of Agents fees? Fortunately for tax payers the Inland Revenue are not so inept.
The FA should investigate the rubbish performance by the so called England team and inablilty of the new coach to change the the team from the same old rubbish dealt out by the last one, bring on Big Sam
More time to respond? He did it, simple as. If the FA are too stupid to watch MOTD it's on YouTube. The evidence is clear for all to see.
Whether it's punishable is another matter. In a world of unpunished divers and bungs this is way too trivial to be newsworthy. If I was Joey I'd Blue Moon again in front of the FA panel before making an intelligent statement. The FA are a laughing stock - 3 months and a bucketful of money wasted only to choose Sven's no 2. They are a Joke!
NB: Neville got punished against Liverpool but Fowler got off winding up the rags after the derby. They aren't even consistent in their stupidity.
Norbert Armchair Rag, If it was Rooney he would have sworn 27 times at the referee and not even got booked! Oh sorry, he's already done that once hasn't he? Go away you pointless peasant
