STUART Pearce insists he still has belief in his City players after they slumped to a Carling Cup defeat against Chesterfield.
Georgios Samaras put the Blues ahead but Caleb Folan and Derek Niven won it for the League One side.
Now, former England captain Pearce knows the pressure is on but in typical style he is refusing to shirk the challenge that lies ahead.
"The first one who takes the flak is me," he said.
"When I walk away, I am the one who should take the criticism, not the players.
"They gave me everything on the pitch but as you would expect they are bitterly disappointed.
"I feel as though we are working hard but we need to work a little bit harder to try and instil some confidence in the side.
"I still have belief in these players. We have good quality players in our dressing room and we have had bids in the summer which prove it.
"But I will not bury my head in the sand, I will come out fighting and I expect the players and coaching staff to do the same."

That's the spirit. Now let's get some results.
Please go and fight somewhere else.....
Go home now, Stuart
YOU COULDNT FIGHT A COLD PEARCE! PEARCE & WARDLE OUT!!!
....................Sorry I'm lost for words, except to say TYPICAL CITY!!
does "i still believe in these players"mean we ave to watch the same god awful squad get beat by the samba lads
All comments you have to say SP I`m afraid.
What I`d like to know is more about your team selection?
Why have we got a team lop sided with no pace?
Why are you not playing Beasley?
Why are we not quite good enough against Chesterfield?
Why have we not been good enough over the last 15 games??
Its same old same old.
That`ll do for starters,
You havin' a laugh?... Is he havin' a laugh?
It so kills me to say this because SP is such a smashing genuine bloke but I really think the writing is on the wall. I hope against hope that I'm wrong and in my heart I think just give the guy a littlemore time he can turn it around. But alas I think we are becomimg to acustomed to defeat. Its maybe time for a change.
The only bids for the players we got in were obviously City's (I'm not sure you can count Bolton's signing of Hamann!)
Sack the Board! Demonstration outside the ground after the West Ham game!!!! SACK THE BOARD!
"They gave me everything." Absolute garbage. They played like a pub team which was clueless! Barton played with heart and so did Micah... in parts. Apart from that they should hand back their wages and give it to charity. That was the most pathetic inept performance I can remember watching and ive seen enough of them to know since 1970. The players looked like theyd given up right until the last 4 minutes when the "mighty" Chesterfield let us back in it. Embarassing and they should apologise. I feel sorry for my kids and all the others who have to go to school tomorrow morning, especially here in Chesterfield. Please SP dont talk utter rubbish. This was a division 1 team you're talking about and they were poor so what does that make us. This team is going only in one direction and your selections are worse than our performances. Reyna on the left... you're having a laugh and as for Corradi, def can't play him and Sam together. It's your team and your head along with Wardle I want to see. No time for sentiment now. Thanks for nearly getting us into Europe , but that was 2 seasons ago. You've been a bad appointment as manager and you've no experience for this, unless you count helping to relegate Forest. Go and let us focus our discontent on the real culprits eg the Board. SP, your record is pants, leave now and take your pathetic backroom staff with you.
City were dire against chesterfield, no pace no creativity no desire it just summed up how city have been playing since chrismas! Pearce has got to go why did he bring on Miller when an international left winger with champions league experiance was also on the bench. The rest of the season wil be a struggle as that was arguable our best side (maybe vassel could get) and chesterfield dominated us and we created a chance! sack Pearce before West Ham so we hace half a chance!
Time to go Pearce.
The slowest, oldest midfield you could have chosen were no match for a fired up Chesterfield. Please go now and at least give the fans some hope that with a new boss we might escape relegation: 13 losses out of the last 16 really speaks for itself and it's sad the manager cannot see that he needs to do the obvious.
Absolute discrace! Pearce makes keegan look like a tactical genius! I can't take anymore. Any bit of confidence I had left in this team has gone out the window. We need experience at the healm now before it's too late! We are going to be in for a very long miserable season otherwise..
Honey period is long long over Pearce, it's time to let the guy go and get George Graham in!!!
Hes as good as gone!
Stuart.........forget it you have been recycling the same drivel for 13 of the last 16 games.
Go now and take Wigley, Distin show me the money, Barton the fan baiter, Corradi, snail on valium would out run him and Reyna, well words fail me with you.
Go now while we have some respect for you your stubborn ways will end up killing the club it is over, the spiral will only end when you go. How else will it. As for the give him more time merchants how long does he need look at the last 16 games do you want 16 more like that?
we got beat by a team thats below us [what,s new ] DO City ever do anything right i can see it now 3rd round of the fa cup Stalybridge celtic 2-1 man city pearce out lets see 14 managers in 17 years [ or something like that ] i think by the year 2020 we will have exhausted all the managers who would have been made avalible and lets face it Who would want to come to city ? now that we are offically crap i dont know what is worse getting beat by oldham Doncaster or Chesterfield Sp,s Signings have [like numurous managers of citys ] have a lot to be desired
please go
Heard it all before, Pearce, change the record and prove it and come out fighting on Saturday against West Ham.....
I think it would be a good idea if you DID bury your head in the sand.......you might find a decent player in there. You deserve no sympathy because when you continue to pick the pathetic Reyna we usually lose - and you keep picking him - please tell me why.
I think you took the easy and lazy option of signing 'names with experience' rather than taking a punt on some lower league players. Don't tell me there isn't any quality out there because 1) there is if you bother to look 2) Where were you playing when spotted by Coventry and 3) anythings better than some of the clowns we've got!!!!! Also, can you let us all know what you learnt at the World Cup in the summer cos I'm sure we'd all like to know. You were a great player and seem a top bloke but you haven't got a clue about players and tactics. Disappointed and surprised
Good Bye Stu it;s over!!!!!!!
A lot of garbage.." I will come out fighting"almost made me throw up.." the boys are working hard" "it will come good"..."I should take the blame"...heard it all before...saw it coming tonight...not good enough to beat chesterfield..the boys are disppointed...so they should be..not disappointed..ashamed..but they will collect there 20 grand plus a week...Bet Distin is glad he did not sign his contract..Nicky W..love you man for what you did against Colchester all those years ago..but one can't live off memories alone..Reyna is a joke..but he is not the only one.
Talk is cheap SP..action and results arew what it is all about..not excuses...
Im coming over from Canada in November to watch the newcastle game..hope it is not a lost cause by then. SP and his backroom team have to go NOW..wish we could get a big investor to come in and buy the club....City, City, why do you always do this to us?????
It's ominous to see the official web site proudly proclaiming that Pearce admits full responsibility for the dire performances this season. It is always easier to produce a scapegoat rather than address the root of the problem. Pearce is to be commended for the manner in which he defends both those he serves and those who serve under him, but by doing so, nothing changes.
It is no surprise that the team is low on confidence; those with any ability look around and see themselves surrounded by cast-offs from other clubs.
If the Macintosh fiscal policy is the way forward, then why are we unable to attract new investors?
Perhaps new investors would want to bring in their own bean-counters, meaning the incumbent bean counters would be forced out. Full marks to Pearce for saying the right things - like me, he is hoping the change will eventually happen and he will be allowed to manage the club without his hands being tied behind his back.
