MANCHESTER City suffered another sad away day at Reading and finished the game with 10 men after Ousmane Dabo was sent off.
The Blues dominated possession but their struggles in front of goal continued, with Ivar Ingimarssonés first-half headed goal for the Royals decisive.
City, who have only won one away game this year, finished a man down when Dabo raised his arm going into an aerial challenge with Steve Sidwell.
It was not in the same class as Ben Thatcherés infamous attack on Portsmouthés Pedro Mendes just over two weeks ago but it was enough to seal a miserable night for City.
Sidwell recovered and nearly scored in the last few minutes, as did striker Kevin Doyle who was denied at the death by last-gasp saves from keeper Nicky Weaver and centre-back Sylvain Distin.
There had also been a 60th-minute flare-up in the City dug-out when Pearce had to calm down Micah Richards who angrily threw his shirt down after being replaced by new signing Hatem Trabelsi.
Rush
City have won only one away game in 13 this year and scored only once this season - from a penalty against Arsenal. But this was newly-promoted Readingés 29th consecutive home game without defeat.
Once the initial Reading rush was over with Leroy Lita scuffing a second-minute chance straight at Weaver and the goalkeeper coming confidently out under pressure to field Nicky Shoreyés dangerous curled free-kick, City looked to take control.
Trevor Sinclairés shot was saved and then he and Richards combined sweetly in the 14th minute to set up Paul Dickov for what looked a certain strike.
The little Scot hit his shot from 15 yards with such a lack of conviction however that Marcus Hahnemann was allowed to gather it at the second attempt.
But when Reading - still without injured marksman Dave Kitson - went for goal they showed no such shyness.
Dickov and Sidwell had just had a dust-up when Distin floored Lita for a booking and a right wing free-kick which Bobby Convey drove into the area over Richard Dunne.
In came Ingimarsson ahead of Distin at the far post and his flicked header left Weaver no chance in the 24th minute.
Opportunity
Sinclair missed another opportunity to equalise for City when he dragged his shot wide after Bernardo Corradi headed down to him on the half hour.
But it needed an extraordinary save from Weaver to stop Ingimarsson adding a second goal with an angled drive, cutting in from the left.
After the break City kept trying to pass their way through and created some more likely openings but on the hour boss Pearce decided there had to be a new cutting edge and he sent on Georgios Samaras for Dickov and Trabelsi for Richards.
The full-back was clearly upset, flinging his shirt down as he came off into the dug-out and needing to be calmed down by his manager and team-mate Dickov.
Samaras made an instant impression, forcing a save from Hahnemann straight away and then hitting another drive that skipped off Ibrahima Sonkoés heels to go behind for a corner.
But James Harper scared City with a smart break and shot which required another stylish stop from Weaver.
South Korea star Seol Ki-Hyeon, who had run his legs off for Reading but had missed a good chance to head their second goal when coming in late for a corner, was replaced to a standing ovation in the 78th minute by Brynjar Gunnarsson.
City then lost Dabo to the straight red card and then 10 men were twice nearly punished by a second goal on the breakaway as they pushed for an equaliser.
What is your verdict on the game? Have your say.

We could have had Shevchenko and Ronaldo up front but they wouldnt have seen the ball. We have needed a creative midfielder since SWP left and he hasnt come. We simply do no possess a player who can unlock premiership defences (1 pen from 4 games says it all). Dabo (not a red), Reyna, Barton and Sinclair are like 4 crabs passing the ball sideways.
Wot a stupid free kick for distin to give away, way take off a RB and bring on another.
Weavers form shows we've wasted 2.5 mill panic buying Isaakson. Weavs cannot be dropped on this form, good on ya lad.
Dunne your not a captain!!!

Hamann clearly wasn't fit as he'd have played some part so why have him on the bench?
Stevie Ireland is our only creative midfielder but doesn't get to play or make the squad.
Samaras and Sturridge are our only chance of goals. Neither start. Ish is our only fit left winger, but plays the last 15 or so?
Whose next on the left a fit again Isaksson?
Richards played very well as did the back 4, Weaver and Barton yet is subbed. He should have tried Trabelsi on the right wing.
Can anyone see where a goal is coming from?
I've not heard Pearce's post match interview but I bet it's something like - "We played well, had most of the possesion and I'm proud of my players. Reading are a good side, not many teams will come here and win."
Corradi needs service if he's to be judged. I'm happy with the defense just wish Pearce would do something about our lack of creation and attack. WE created few good chances.
Aggreived.

RELEGATION, CHAMPIONSHIP, JOURNEY MEN, CANT SCORE, PLAYERS NOT INTERESTED IN MCFC, NO DISIPLINE, NO QUALITY, 40,000 each WEEK/FIRE SALES BUT NO MONEY, CLUB WITH NO AMBITION.
What a joke it was tonight, despite all the play, no left side (that includes div 2 standard Jordan) & 2 totally none events in midfield (reyna/dabo) we cant break down a very poor premiership team like reading. The warning signs have been there with the signings of goal shy strikers like dickov/corradi & the sale of cole.
Give them a rocket Pearce or you will be gone by xmas !

new signings half a yard behind the pace, could be something to do with their age??
the game was crying out for hammann but SPs tactics prevented that.
Not surprised at Micah's reaction one of the only threats on the park was substituted??
Not a sending off for me for dabo, but could be afters for Thatcher, though SP denied that
The only bit of optimism I heard all night was Joe Royle saying we had all the ammunition to stay comfortably in the top flight
I really hope he's right but with no natural goal scorer after Coles mutiny I wonder if we will be in another all too familiar scrap down the bottom

The match almost looked over before it started. Since when was Reyna a left sided midfield player and why can't we ever get behind the defence and cut the balls back. Didn't see even Reading failing to get behind the back four. Time for new tactics, genuine pace and a real drive for goals before we get stuck in a dogfight. Poorest goal difference I can remember since before KK came and just continuing our woes on the road from last season. I'll ignore the send- ing off which was harsh but made no impact on our timid performance supporting the strikers. Midfield playing far too deep. Much better with Sam, so STOP DROPPING HIM Psycho! Get the passing crisper, some pace in the side and balance that hopeless left-side. Excellent chance next week here in Chesterfield. Best chance of honours so please don't play a second string team again. We can already kiss goodbye to the top six finish so let's lift the Carling Cup. Last point to Micah. You've got your place in the centre after January so grow up and fast. Next time you want to get rid of your shirt swap it for Distin's instead

Team selection wrong.
Substitutes Wrong.
Manager Wrong.
Andy Johnson buy right.
Crouch buy right.
Managers buys wrong.
Money difference plus 6mill.
4places up the premier league settles the bill.
Diff in final end of season position is pluss 10 places = 10 mill./
Conclusion is not up to the job. Who?
