TEN-MAN City slumped to defeat at Stamford Bridge as Chelsea began the defence of their league title in confident style.
John Terry and Frank Lampard put Jose Mourinho's men in command before Bernardo Corradi was sent off on his City debut. Didier Drogba added the third.
It was business as usual at Stamford Bridge, where Mourinho has still not lost a league game since his arrival, two years ago.
Chelsea did not look particularly fluent in their new attacking formation with two strikers and two wingers.
But they went ahead through their on-field leader Terry in the 11th minute and, from that point, never looked like taking anything less than three points from the game.
Terry, who scored England's first goal of the season in last week's friendly against Greece, once again proved what a big influence he can have on matches.
The defender trotted forward after Ben Thatcher fouled Paulo Ferreira on the Chelsea right.
Arjen Robben delivered an inswinger and Terry slipped marker Richard Dunne to glance a header past City goalkeeper Nicky Weaver, standing in for new signing Andreas Isaksson.
Weaver had no chance with that goal or the second, from Lampard in the 26th minute, which took a cruel deflection off Dunne.
Michael Essien found his midfield partner unmarked on the edge of the City penalty area with his back to goal.
Stranded
Lampard, also on target for England against Greece, spun and released a low shot which clipped Dunne on the shin and left Weaver stranded.
It put Chelsea in total control despite the string of injuries which left Mourinho without Michael Ballack, Claude Makelele, Joe Cole, Robert Huth, Geremi and Petr Cech.
William Gallas was not considered for selection after upsetting Mourinho with his late return for pre-season and his demands for a transfer.
City boss Pearce came to Stamford Bridge with problems of his own.
Isaksson, Didi Hamann, Hatem Trabelsi and Andy Cole were missing but there were Premiership debuts for Ousmane Dabo and Corradi.
City rarely troubled Carlo Cudicini. Claudio Reyna fired wide from long-range in the first-half and Corradi miscued a difficult chance on the volley.
Chelsea wanted a penalty when an Andriy Shevchenko shot hit Dunne on the arm, five minutes into the second half, but referee Steve Bennett waved away their appeals.
It was another of the controversial ball-to-hand incidents which have dominated the first weekend of the Premiership.
Replays clearly showed the ball hit Dunne's arm but it was not intentional and City escaped.
Any hope of a dramatic City comeback vanished when Corradi collected his second yellow card in the 63rd minute.
The striker was booked when he and Dabo performed a pincer attack on Ferreira - and the Italian received his second booking for a reckless late challenge on Essien.
It was a clear-cut decision for referee Bennett, who also booked Essien for his reaction to the foul, when the Chelsea midfielder tugged Corradi's hair.
Drogba made it 3-0 with a diving header, 12 minutes from time, after Wayne Bridge had raced down the left-wing on the overlap and collected a pass from Robben.
It looked like a good day for the champions would be capped when Shevchenko had the net in stoppage time - - but the Ukrainian's hopes of opening his Premiership goal account on his debut were ended by an offside flag.
What is your verdict on the game? Have your say.

'Barton should have had a clause in his contract which said he should pass to a player in a City shirt'

We missed the chance of getting Martin O'Neill in as boss and now we are lumbered with SP, who is building a team in his own image. All we have a re a bunch of cloggers, and football has moved on since your time SP. Dickov wasn't good enough for us 4 years ago, and now he's even slower ( No, I didn't think he could get any slower, either). I went to the Porto game last week and have been telling eveyone since that Corradi will get sent off a lot. How come I do a job I can't stand, for ??900 a month, but can still judge a player, when SP anf Wigley are on, at least, ??1M, and can't see it?
Weaver wasn't at fault today, but he has no presence in the box. Barton? He was truely hopeless, he makes Richard Edghill look like a great passer, he can't head, and isn't that tough, when he comes up against Big lads, like Essien. Dabo might be OK when he gets use to the pace of the Prem, Dunne is back to the clumsy oaf we all know, Distin still loses concentration ans Samaras, well I stick up for you Georgie, but you are a big lazy lump aren't you ?
Only Richards looked any cop, and Vas and Steve Ireland did OK. This time next week, we'll have no points, and you can quit then Stuart, and let us get Allerdyce in, before Sunderland get him.
Boy, did I enjoy those 3 month away from these muppets.

Why will the boad not spend some money, and find some investors to help them run the club? Teams in the Championship spend more than us,and that is where we will end up and belong. And yes I ama City fan (over30 years) but the club no longer has ambition and is putting all it's eggs in the academy to produce a string of top class players.

In short we were chasing the game at 2-0 but after the dismissal it was damage limitation

More action Blues and less talk about what we will do as we had pre this game.We had so much of "We will do it for our fans" towards the end of last season only to see halfhearted performances and taste defeat after defeat.
Feel sure, if Pearce is unable, our crowd will lift them mid week and we will knock a few past Portsmouth and that ex keeper of ours. Our crowd may be key this season in helping us win our home games and gain enough points to survive.
C'mon City .. make a fight of it this season and make us proud of you... no more half hearted efforts by some of you.
