MANCHESTER City's bid to buy out the sell-on clause in the contract of rising star Micah Richards has been rejected by Oldham.
Defender Richards is seemingly attracting considerable attention from several Premiership clubs, notably Spurs who are being linked with a é5million move for the 18-year-old.
Chelsea, Arsenal and Liverpool are also rumoured to be targeting Richards, who made a major impact last season after breaking through into manager Stuart Pearce's plans.
Although City are determined to hang onto one of their crown jewels, money talks as was the case exactly a year ago when Shaun Wright-Phillips joined Chelsea for é21million.
Richards was signed by City four years ago from Oldham's Centre of Excellence, and is currently under contract at Eastlands until 2008, although there is talk of the club looking to make an improved offer.
Suggestion
But in covering their options, as Richards yesterday made clear his future may one day lie elsewhere, City had hoped to persuade Oldham to agree a figure for the 20% sell-on clause, one that could eventually net them at least a seven-figure sum.
But a statement on Athletic's website said: "The club can now confirm City have been in touch with a suggestion they buy out the clause which could eventually net a six-figure sum.
"Our polite reply was: `Thanks but no thanks."'
Richards could ultimately be lured away from City if one of the Premiership's big guns come calling as he has said: "For now I am with Manchester City, but I can't always say I'll be a Manchester City player in the future.
"At the end of the day everyone wants to better their career, and if Chelsea, Arsenal or wherever was the right place to go, I'd have to consider it, wouldn't I?
"Obviously there has been interest from different clubs. After only 15 starts the interest is unbelievable really. It's good to know, but my dad just keeps telling me to keep my feet on the ground, keep working hard and things will pay off."
Richards is not the only star City are apparently looking to tie up long term as skipper Sylvain Distin is believed to have been offered a new three-year contract which would make him the highest-paid player at the club.

sell distin and barton but under no circumstances must richards be sold yet.giving oldham a big pay off when the time comes to sell him will be worth it becoz this guy has the potential to become not only a city great but an england great. and if oldham did find him then they deserve there cut as well however much that turns out to be.what beggars belief to me is how can we sign faithfull owd retainer dicky when mr j flo of hasselbank has just gone to charlton on a free and we never had so much of a sniff of him the guy is still a class act even at he age he is.still heres to the new season and hopefully a cpla decent players we aint signed yet and a better effort from all than last seasons shoddy efforts.
Frankly, yet another piece of embarrassing ineptitude on behalf of the MCFC Board. Going cap in hand to Oldham with a request of this type was only ever going to end with a slap in the kipper. Let's face it, if we're asking, then it's for a reason, and the only possible reason is that we're anticipating having to sell him, in which case Oldham will have been well aware that the player is worth more than 5 million. Fully agree with those posters who say we should have nothing more to do with Oldham though. The next time they come-a-begging, on the verge of bankruptcy, we should stick two fingers up and let them sink without trace. Furthermore, in an ideal world we should sell Richards for a nominal cash fee, and accept a couple of decent players from the buyer on 'frees' in part exchange!
They would have been pretty stupid to have accepted it!!
What a shower & an embarassment - "covering options" - clearly if an offer comes in from a big club we've lost them - whats the point?
I didn't know that MR had connections with the 'Mighty Yonners', but now the truth is out, I suppose they will put the pressure on City to sell. And I reckon City would do just that. But what does worry me about this story isn't the Oldham connection, but instead it's MR talking about moving on to further his career. I can accept him doing this to build up his pay packet, they all do it, but by implying that City will never be anything other than a feeder club, I have to ask myself if it's worth getting worked up about the game. If the players think they will never be winners here, what's the point of dragging myself along to the COMS every game?
what are the club thinking? we need this like we need a hole in the head the club needs to say one thing NOT FOR SALE and nothing else.(if that is true)
This is obviously a signal that city will be looking to sell richards for the right price.
Time to go wardle,
you waster.
I don't really have much of a problem with either Micah's comments (as I read them on the Sky site) or with City considering to buy out Oldham's sell-on clause. First, Micah just sounds realistic. City have a wage ceiling that some clubs can exceed. So IF he continues to impress as he has started to and fulfills expectations (just as we all hope he does), he will be able to command a higher salary than we can currently pay and he will need to consider moving on... unless City can then match that wage valuation, of course. That is simply a reality for a club like City at the moment. Currently we can't compete with some clubs re wages just as some clubs can't compete with us (Sidwell perhaps?). Second, re Oldham, City are just preparing for the possibility, or inevitability, that one day Micah will be sold. So if we can buy out Oldham's sell-on clause based on current 5 million pound valuation of him, and we then sell him for more than that, as we would expect to, then it is a shrewd move by City (perhaps shrewder if we did it during last season rather than in the summer). Of course Oldham will also want to hold on to the clause and hold out for a higher sale price of the player. But then again maybe they will need to get the cash in sooner or later. All in all like others I am desperate for Micah to stay for at least a few more seasons, but... who knows.
WARDLE stick to running sport shops becuse you now nothing about running afootball club.
Sounds to me as if City are paving the way to sell him. Also sounds to me that he's sees City as stepping stone, when he should realise he wouldn't be anywhere near the first team at the so called big clubs, so could try being a little more respectful to the club and the fans. You've played less than 20 games, have done well, but let's see how you go in your 2nd season. You're no Maradona are you? You only stand out as most of our players are donkeys. You could, of course, clear off to London, spend your time playing X Box, miss out on going to the World Cup, let someone else in ahead of you ( Aaron Lennon), and be very rich, but never heard of. Show a little loyalty. Remember players like Colin Bell. You're not now, and NEVER WILL BE, fit to lace his boots.
As if they were going to accept. Doh!
Am I being cynical here!
Richards is linked with a move and we 1st rebuff the bid then 2nd try to pay Oldham to scrap the buy out clause.
Are we trying to pay Oldham so we keep all the imminent transfer.
I've a feeling he's on his way to Arsenal. Hope he doesn't go as he looks to have great potential. Still if a really good offer came then I'd be tempted.
Cant see problem with Micah's comments, as just showing ambition, and surely at 18 years old, he knows he is still learning his trade. He will go one day, but would be nive to get a good few years out of him. Still undecided as to whether we are looking to buy out his sell on clause from Oldham because we are looking to see at the right price, or whether just being sensible for the future big transfer fee, in trying to protect that slice of the cake being eaten by Oldham. Come on Micah you've got years ahead of you, dont make the same mistake of SWP !!!
Can't blame the lad for being pleased that he is wanted. Let's hope he looks at Shuany's Chelsea experience and setles down with City for a while. Another 3 years at City will be good for him and the club. AS for Dizzie, he and Dunnie are worth 10 points to City before a ball is kicked and he is most definitely the senior partner. I want him to stay big time.Joey now, he's already been offered more than he is worth! I'd sooner move mountains to keep the Brummie than the ungrateful scouser.
Bad for Morale, City. Poor timing.
I will guarantee that Micah has gone by the end of Jan.
i think what micah said was spot on..ime fed up with players sputing the same Rubbish....give the guy some credit for being HONEST, everything he said was fair comment
sell micah and this is my last season ticket after 30 years.
I can understand why the club would like to negotiate this clause that is not an issue. The issue here is how stupid are the board of directors to think that Oldham would want to negotiate when there has been such high profile interest in Richards for several months now. Nobody in their right mind would negotiate when they are due 20% of whatever he sells for. Another thing, City are continually portraying themselves as having no money, where was the ??1m going to come from to buy out the 20%? This money would be better spent on a player to add to the inadequate squad. Is this further proof that the mismanagement of the club continues abound or is the club in a financially better state than is being portrayed? Whatever happens there is no way City will get a good deal on this, that is the price to pay for putting this clause in place when Richards was acquired. If Richards wants to leave then we have to get the best price possible and accept the consequences is 20% goes to Oldham.
Caught red handed wardle see's the pound signs again !!!
Wardle turns to plan B after the failure of selling Joey Barton & any huge sum of money being thrown at Distin.
Wardles Tactics initially offer players under valued contracts then there agents step in & player becomes unhappy at club seaking exit.
If only the winning loto numbers were as predictable as Mr wardle i'd be rich & buy the club myself lol.
I see SP is second FAVORITE for the first sacking of the season no surprise realy man can only live on bread and water for so long.
city set to unveil Corradi in a 1m deal.he was parmas top scorer with 10 on loan last season. 6ft3 big guy.powerful check out his website.a few nice goals on it.squad is shaping up nicely.Nasri Malbranque and Sidwell with have us buzzin!!!
Micah is obviously on his way out of COM stadium. When will city stop selling the best young players we have got
Closing the stable door after the horse has bolted??? This is typical of the mis-management that is Manchester City Football Club!
"At the end of the day everyone wants to better their career, and if Chelsea, Arsenal or wherever was the right place to go, I'd have to consider it, wouldn't I?.....
Choose 'wherever' Micah????..........its MAN CITY listen to yer Dad!!
Don,t be influenced by the club captains distrespectful behaviour to the club and fans....
please stay
Life long blue.. but credit to the woolly backs for holding their ground. The whole point of this system is to benefit clubs from lower leagues who produce a gem ! Look what the rags did poaching Scholes, Butt et al from them.. City til I die.. but come on city play fair !!
