STUART Pearce has backed Ben Thatcher after the defender's forceful challenge on Diomansy Kamara this weekend.
Referee Mike Dean did not see the tackle, but West Brom boss Bryan Robson felt it warranted a red card on its own.
Unsurprisingly, given his own no-nonsense approach to defending, Pearce thought Thatcher had done nothing wrong.
"I remember playing alongside Bryan for 10 years and he was always on at me to put the winger in the stand like Ben did," smiled the City boss.
"It is interesting to see how his opinions have changed. I guess that kind of thing happens when you are in management."
For all their top-flight troubles since winning promotion 18 months ago, Robson's side have encountered few problems against City.
They took four points off the Blues last term, and, following an opening-day draw at Eastlands, matched that tally with a win which was never in doubt once Kamara had skipped past Thatcher and lashed home with just five minutes on the clock.
Left-back Paul Robinson enhanced his England claims by racing on to Kanu's return pass and then pulling a superb cross back from the by-line for Kevin Campbell to nod home the second.
Why do City have such problems with West Brom? Have your say.

Why with West Brom? Why with Middlesbrough? Why with Arsenal? Why with first round cup opponents from lower divisions? And why do we seem to play well against a team that wear the claret? Or when we have a late kick-off with floodlights on? Or was it just a silly question MEN to start with ...
Stuart Pierce should remember that the present rules do not permit the tackling that Robson and he did and to be fair accepted in the "good old days". As a modern manager he should not accept the challenges that earn his players needless yellow cards. My mate Ged reckons under present refs the old Leeds united would have been down to eight players every match
It's quite simple really. They have a mind-control system that outputs a signal that turns our players to a quivering jelly. It also explains a lot about Brummies. Other teams have counter-measures but we're short of cash so can't afford them.
We have problems with west brom because they are the most mind-numbingly boring side in the premiership, just the thought of them is enough to send our players into semi-coma. As for Thatcher, i don't rate him, both in terms of ability or hair style. Stephen Jordan is a better option.
JimmyCity of Fallowfield is dead right. To Ben Thatcher, City is just one port of call in what is a journeyman career. To Stephen Jordan, City is where he's been for half his life. It seems quite obvious to me. Jordan didn't deserve to lose his place after the Liverpool match, amd I hope he returns to the starting XI against Birmingham on Saturday evening.
