Vincent Kompany backs Manchester City to recover from 'harsh' defeat

BACK IN ACTION: It was a frustrating return to the side for Kompany
Manchester City captain Vincent Kompany felt luck was against the Blues at Everton but expects them to recover from their latest blow.

City had their three-point advantage at the top of the Premier League wiped out last night as Darron Gibson's deflected strike condemned them to a 1-0 defeat.

With United beating Stoke at Old Trafford, City now lead the Reds on goal difference at the league summit.

The result rounded off a frustrating January for City which began with a defeat at Sunderland and saw them go out of both domestic cup competitions.

Kompany, who returned from a four-match suspension, told City's website: "In a season you are going to lose games - unfortunately you have to lose games at some point.

"We didn't want it to happen but we look forward and we still want to go on and bring the league back to Manchester City."

Manager Roberto Mancini, who remarkably blamed his own complacency for last night's loss, will hope for better fortune in February, starting with Saturday's home clash against Fulham.

City had long spells of possession at Goodison Park but Everton's makeshift centre-back pairing of Tony Hibbert and John Heitinga coped well with the challenge.

Samir Nasri had the visitors' best effort when he hit the bar from 30 yards but Everton almost claimed an early lead when Joleon Lescott headed off the line from Denis Stracqualursi.

Gibson's shot deflected in off Gareth Barry on the hour mark and City could not muster a reply, although they felt they could have had a penalty when an Aleksandar Kolarov cross struck Phil Neville's arm.

"I thought probably losing was a bit harsh but we knew it was going to be difficult," Kompany added.

"We are just disappointed we couldn't be more dangerous after dominating the game like this.

"In the end it was a deflected goal - there was nothing the goalkeeper or anyone could do about that.

"We never felt like we were in too much danger but I guess it is their strength - they contained us pretty well and when they had the chance, with a bit of luck, they scored. From that moment it was always difficult.

"I think it was one of those kind of games where if you don't have a bit of luck with you on a day like this you don't win."

In the words of guess who? (we didn't deserve that, we had no help from the ref we didn't deserve to loose that game).Answers on the dark side.Don't train with lescott Gareth i think he uses a medicine ball or the ball has a brick in it. Don't be scared of the ball look at it i think the talk of kolarov knocking people out with the ball is in back of some players minds at the moment man up because the shot from gibson 15mins later was in row z.I hope we will bounce back from this vinny because if we slip up again its all over for the prem title.See you all at the Fulham gameCTID. After refelction I feel more optimistic, Ok, we didn't do enough to win and lost to a stuffy goal, but it happens. I think we are all feeling the tension as this is new to us. The Rags know that they will lose games and still be there or thereabouts. We need to stop worrying about every result when we are only just over half way through the season.

We also need to get a sense of timescales. SBF took 6 years to win the PL when the competiotion was less fierce, Chelsea took a while post Abramovitch, starting from a stronger base.

This is by far the best City team in my lifetime. We have won a pot at last and for the first time I can remember (too young to really understand in 77/78) we are challenging for the title. But it is not now or never. Our owners are committed to the club and behind the scenes a solid club is being built.

We mustn't let an unfortunate result overshadow our views. Most of all, let's not become like the rags.

hardly a harsh defeat when their goalkeeper doesn't have a shot to save, not good enough

The title is never decided in Jan/Feb,we have just come through a rough month without a number of key players yet are going into Febuary still top, there is still a long way to go and there will be ups and downs.have faith and enjoy the ride !!!

Let's remember that if there was video replay for just incidents in the penalty area we would be still unbeaten in the Premier league and in the Carling cup final. 1. Silva's pen v Chelsea 2. Offside goal v Sunderland 3. Neville's handball v Everton and 4. In the cup both the penalty decisions.

I think, as with most things, you make your own luck in this game.

If nothing is going to plan, then someone like yourself, should grab the game by the scruff of the neck and attack more direct and shoot within sight of the goalmouth, rather than continue passing the opposition to death and trying to walk the ball into the net.

Just go back to how we played against Spurs at WHL, and when we spanked SAF and Utd 1-6, the range of passing was devastating ! quick and effective, with none of the negative, ineffective, "hot potato" football we have been playing recently and getting beat.

Mancini should just tell Dzeko, "go out and enjoy yourself, there is no pressure, you will not be dropped, you are part of my long term plans ", then watch the goals fly in, "Form is temporary, Class is Permanent !"

Come on City, we can do it !!!

Everton are never a class side by any stretch. Other EPL championship hopefuls (including Manure) seem to win easily against them. We must discover our scoring mojo fast as other outfits (Swansea, Wolves, Norwich etc) will have taken notes of Everton, WBA and Sunderland's attempts to contain us. Our play is all to predictable with slow build up lately. OK Dzeko hasn't got a great 1st touch and goes down too easily but we're short on strikers, must use a physical guy and play to his strengths (headers from decent crosses, running onto through balls).

The real truth lies somewhere in a mix of all the above comments.

The fact is we're still top of the table, Mancini said he would be happy with that pre-Christmas, given what was ahead over that period and January. I think he's pretty calm about it all

He cocked up for the Everton game, and he's admitted it, he did so at Anfield last year, and admitted it then, the team didn't look back. There's no reason to suspect it won't happen again.
Ya Ya is a big miss, but it won't be long now, he's such a vital cog. I believe that a few are suffering with a bit of lost confidence at the moment, He should help restore that both to individuals and the team as a whole.
The team has proved itself to be the best footballing side and squad within the Premiership for most of the season so far, the only question left to answer is has it got that devil and determination to prove itself worthy of the title??, I think it has. Mancini says there are still 15 games to go, he's right, but it's not many is it??, but we have a run of games coming up that could conceivably win it for us,...............it's up to the players now,..............how badly do they really want it????

Talking of Dzeko not scoring , I see Guidetti is banging them in on aregular basis. I watched this kid(18 at the time) on the summer tour last year and you could tell then that this boy has great potential which is the main reason that he has to be in our squad for next season, we don't need to spend millions on someone else. What we do need is anther winger as well as AJ,who needs to produce more, to cross balls into the box for both these players as uor front line is very small without Balli or Edin.

i think our season starts now from saturday the thing is we are still top after a terrible january so if .if we can beat fulham on saturday and be 3 points clear again .with the rest playing each other for the next few weeks this is a big big big chance so lets not blew it.

I hope the players are prepared as Fulham will be no pushover with Dempsey scoring for fun and will give our defence a tough time and run around If they do not focus and stop him. Martin Jol has a good record against MCFC so I for one see this being tough, very tough.

It think this season is a total failure for Mancini, not only has he been undermined by Tevez, he won't win the EPL. He does not instill confidence in his players. City must sack him and get JOSE MOURINHO while they can otherwise they won't get the epl crown for a long time

Let's just face it............................

Where ref's are concerned we get nowt!

3 decent shouts for pens, 2 dead certs, the Augero 'iffy' one more cert than each at the Swamp.

The real real p*ss-take was Lescott instead of getting a pen for was penalised by the ref for a foul against!

Other than that City only had a couple of shots and one was from 30 plus yards.

Its all Dzeko's fault

Forget winning the league this year, teams have sussed us out!!! And mancini has no answers, wish brian kidd would open his mouth with some sound words of wisdom, just to guide mancini if anything else!!! Sorry to say this my fellow blues, but it seems the special one has already been sounded out to take the reigns when mancini looses us the league! No way will our owners sit back and watch mancini throw it all away!!! And lets face it people thats what he is doing!!! Neva the less C.T.I.D. As always!!!!

Three more points against Everton is a huge improvement on the past two seasons.
Still top, most goals for and least goals against, one less home game than United and an easier run in. Battered our only two rivals for the title at their place, how bad can it be?

Failing to understand the hysteria from some of the fans right now. We are still top of the league and have played one less home game than United. The Everton result was very disappointing as we dominated all aspects of the game and they scored with a shot that was going wide left before deflecting into the top right hand corner – not unlike the goal at Liverpool, which was also missing by miles.

Sad to say that the reffing again went against us as I am sure if Neville was playing for City it would have been a pen and any City player would have seen red for the Drenthe challenge.

Back to positives and nobody has given us the run around this season, with barely a good goal scored against us, Fletcher’s being the only real quality goal I can recall. On the other hand we have trounced both United and Spurs, surely the only challengers now for the title.

If we look at United, the loss to Blackburn was a terrible display and Newcastle gave them a complete going over. In addition they had really bad games against Basle twice and lost at home to Palace in the CC. In contrast we beat Arsenal away and were unlucky to lose in both the cups.

Tottenham were very poor against Wolves at home and Swansea away, plus went out of Europe with poor displays against Salonika home and away. Aside from the thrashing we gave them they also got drilled by 3 at United.

Arsenal and Chelsea are well out of the picture and our two challengers have also had more problems than we have had. We are really seeing how important Ya Ya is to the team now he is away.

Let’s be positive blues, still top with an easier run in than either of the other two.
