Roberto Mancini relieved after 'vital' victory over Wigan

Roberto Mancini and Roberto Martinez on the sidelines
Manchester City boss Roberto Mancini saluted a "vital" victory against Wigan after his side went three points clear at the top of the Premier League.

Edin Dzeko's goal gave the Blues a 1-0 win but there were chances at both ends in a tense game.

Mancini said: "It was about the victory not the performance tonight.

"It was really important to win tonight. We knew that was difficult because Wigan this month have played very well and Roberto Martinez is a fantastic manager.

"I was nervous when it was still 1-0 but that's normal, every player and manager is nervous."

Mancini hopes Dzeko can build on the goal.

He added on Sky Sports 1: "I'm very happy for him because he deserved to score a goal. He scored this very important goal for us and I hope he continues it in the next game."

Typical rubbish ref. Handball by wigan player & only a yellow! He was last man!! He should be off. Great win. Now go & beat Spurs & Arsenal beat the Rags...6 points, easy.

Wigan are only a couple of points away of getting out of the bottom three, and I don't see why they can't do it. A bit more gritting the teeth and they will be out of the bottom three. Mr Martinez has the right idea and is a good manager. Good Luck to Wigan.

Looks like Dzeko will play next game. Let's hope Aguero starts playing alongside him. The two just struggle together recently.
1-0 against Spurs will do nicely.

Brilliant result. Great determination. Need to take chances. Solid performances throughout. Special praise for Barry and Dzeko.

Man of the match - Toe!

Would have collected the Champagne but it's (ahem) Tee-Toetal.

I'll get my coat!

I don't agree with our manager waving an imaginary card in tonight's game but I share his frustration at the inconsistencies of our referees.

I will go to my grave arguing that Kompany's tackle on Nani was legal but if all similar challenges were punished in the same way I can get over it, but I have seen three tackles during this weekend games that were worse. two of them injured players who had to be subded.None of them got a red card.

Tonight a Wigan player who was the last man even though he was on the half way line deliberately handled the ball to deny a goal scoring opportunity and should have been red carded but wasn't .The rules of the game are very clear on this one.

It's time for referees to face the post match cameras to explain to the fans these sort of decisions .

Roberto, for all the negativity/lies you have had from pundits, press etc, this season you had started to turn it all around....its been great seeing those people who were slagging you off having to eat humble pie with the style of football we have played and the way you handled the Tevez affair, but you really have let yourself down with waving cards and also complaining about playing every 3 days recently which is what successful teams have to do.

Yes I know we have injuries and people at African nations but so do other teams. We just have to get on with it, and I think all you have done is ramped the pressure up on you and the team.

Thankfully we came through it tonight with a well earned win and a Dzeko goal just before the Spurs game, and as a confidence player you could see the relief that goal gave him and was reflected in his play.

Ps Great to see Nedum back in the shirt

The Two Robertos. I

As I was saying, when I was interrupted, The Two Robertos.
Martinez is a nice fella, so articulate, his English is superb. He is sporting and gives credit where it`s due.
I`m hoping Wigan stay up. Their manager deserves some success.

I don't care what anyone who is a pessimistic prat says or writes about City, the players and the way the game was played? This optimistic prat is saying the defence played terrific, they didn't score! Our attack was fantastic, we did? The team played great, we won! Your miserable and moaning, I'm happy and whistling!
Up and Up, the Blues!

And he [mankini] wanted a WIGAN player to be sent off! why? he cant plan to win against 11? what is the difference between him and that boy who is like his son? i mean the boy who wears No.10 and he plays for the current English CHAMP19NS.

Mankini went mental about Rooney's red card waving, even though he was clearly showing two fingers to the ref to indicate a two footed challenge.

Mankini has now shown his imaginary red card in Ciddy's last three games!!!!

But he apologised after the first one, so that's OK then, he clearly isn't a hipocrite is he?

Can you believe the arrogance of this man and his club?

A lip reading friend of mine translated Mankini's words for me.

"It's not fair, we've got the most money so do as I say and send him off, boo hoo hoo......."

Mankini oooooohhhh
Mankini oooooohhhh
He comes from Italy
and thinks he's a referee

Classless, bitter manager for a classless, bitter club

Wigan are fighting for survival
Dzeko header was very good
Aguero could have scored a hat-trick!
Savic played well and looks good running with the ball out of defence ( again) just a pity that he is told to stop at the half-way line where he played it sidewards and two team mates eventually passed it back to Joe Hart, why??
When we have possession on the edge of the box we pass it wide only for a cross to come in, we need to advance into the area or shoot more often , as how many times have teams done that to us and scored from deflections?
Silva is a lovely player but his passing has not been brilliant lately, wish he could shoot like Modric.
We have missed having a big forward in the last few games, Dzeko and Mario need to give 100% especially as they should hopefully be fighting for their places again soon.
Job done, away win and no conceding any goals, pretty much damn perfect!

Why does Bobby wave an imaginary red card?

Because he's had enough from myopic refs who have given absolutely ridiculous red cards.

Balotelli (2 yellows), Clichy (2 yellows), Barry (2 yellows) and the daddy of them all Vinny (red).

Keep it up gentleman Bobby it is the only way you can put pressure on these useless officials .........................

TO DO THEIR JOB RIGHT !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Players in different positions, a different formation with Barry and Milner as midfield support. We missed the reassurance of Komapny, the drive and ability to change tactics with Yaya. Yet we will still be top of the league going into February whatever happens Sunday. A result against Spurs, players coming back would really set us up for a title tilt mind. Well done Roberto.

Have you seen Mancini's interviews lately? Hi body language and often ‘silence speaks volumes’ response - when asked questions about missing personnel - is screaming out messages to Chairman Khaldoon & Co., “I need at least one more signing...and SOON!

Hope he gets his wish… 8- )

Media Watch.

The big question?

Will Brasil, Irani, Saggers, Quinn, Hansen, Lawrenson, Thomas, et al

Receive their Man City destabilisation bonuses from the Swamp?

Shame!

Not great for the blood pressure but job done, 3pts, gritty and effective, and shuts up all the negative media, despite having the best league record of the top teams over the past 4 games !
Roberto getting lots of stick for his touchline antics, but which manager berates and swears at officials from the touchline more than any other ? Answers on a postcard
please !
By the way is Mr Neville really a closet blue ?!!! Talking sense and gushing about City ? Must be on the hard stuff !!!!!!!

You always know who City have played the week before, How ? it's easy just listen to the chants, they are mostly 'borrowed' from the team they have just played, typical city

Edin is clearly a confidence player, but he seems a genuine and honest player to me, when its not going well he puts the effort in. He's obviously popular with his team mates, so why armchair experts slate him, Yaya, GB I don't know.

Huge game this weekend and the lads will be fired up. Seems the only fan we have amongst the pundits is Gary Neville. That's good because he's the only one with any clue.

It was a win, in the first twenty minutes we only needed one half of the pitch and we could have subbed Hart for another out field player. That seems to be the way of this this season.

But come May all that matters is the three points, there are no points for artist interpretaion in football just wins.

Given who we are missing, to go away to a spirit and let's face it a team that tried hard to play football, this was a result of champions. Mancini has said this would be a hard month, he wasn't wrong!
