Table-topping Manchester City cut the high-flying Magpies down to size with a clinical performance at the Etihad Stadium.
Newcastle boasted the best defence in the Premier League on their arrival in Manchester, but first-half goals from Mario Balotelli (penalty) and Micah Richards gave the Blues a deserved lead.
Although Newcastle threatened briefly when Hatem Ben Arfa hit the post, Sergio Aguero slotted a second-half spot-kick to ensure City's serene progess at the Premier League summit continued.
Dan Gosling scored a late consolation for Newcastle. City have now played 12, won 11 and drawn one game in the Premier League.
City started strongly - Aguero fizzed a shot over the bar and Tim Krul produced an excellent one-handed save to deny Balotelli's close range header.
But the Blues were still searching for some kind of inspiration when Taylor made his intervention.
He would be correct in claiming he was within close proximity of Yaya Toure's shot five minutes before the break.
However, referee Chris Foy presumably took the view that with his arm outstretched, Taylor was asking for trouble, which duly came in the form of a penalty when the ball hit him inside the box.
Never one to avoid a bit of drama, Balotelli strode slowly to the spot-kick before side-footing neatly into the bottom corner.
It was the Italian's ninth goal of the season and was celebrated with a folding of the arms and a steely stare.
Taylor's afternoon was soon to get worse as on City's next attack he tried to control Samir Nasri's through ball and turn at the same time.
All the full-back succeeded in doing was allow Richards the chance to intervene.
Mystifyingly overlooked by Fabio Capello, the full-back finished smartly and suddenly City were clear.
Chance
To their credit, Newcastle refused to let their heads drop and went close through in form forward Demba Ba.
But the second-half just brought more anguish in their bid to drag themselves back into the game.
First Ben Arfa drove a low shot against a post after he had nipped in to rob Vincent Kompany.
Then Fabricio Coloccini belted a volley wide after being picked out completely unmarked from Yohan Cabaye's corner.
Finally, Hart denied Guthrie, who has sped into the box and gone for the far corner from an acute angle.
Having come through those trials and tribulations unscathed, it seemed harsh that City should grab another themselves after Ben Arfa had sent Richards tumbling in the box.
With Balotelli replaced by David Silva, Aguero took over spot-kick duties and promptly sent Krul the wrong way.
The sight of Aguero and Toure hobbling off before the end would be a worry for manager Roberto Mancini with Tuesday's must-not-lose Champions League trip to Napoli looming.
And the City boss would not be too happy that Gosling's effort two minutes from time denied his side a clean sheet.
What is your verdict on the action? Have your say.
We apologise for the lack of photos from the game. This is due to technical problems.

Great win. Barcodes hard to break down. They had chances but we took ours and comfortable in the end. Stern test to come with dippers, gooners and chelski. Get to xmas still ahead that will be a time to really assess our progress. Tough chimps league matches too. But great times for city fans.
Sign of the times, disappointed with late goal for magpies.
Ok Mr. Pardew, thats what you get for referring to us as 'upstarts". It's better to keep you trap shut concerning City these days, Mancini will make sure it backfires on you. Enjoyed the win, the 3 points and ending their run. Another happy Saturday night, it will be even better if we stay 7 or 8 points clear.
Good performance all around. Now for Napoli !!
Great all round effort, never really left second gear.... saving the energy for Napoli.
Let's hope the Swans wont be sick today in South Wales!!!!
No chips and no photos bad day all round !
Good performance today from the lads, composed and professional, shame concentration and a bad deflection let Newcastle in for a late goal, but 3-1 against the best defence in the premiership is not a bad result at all.
Onwards and upwards!
How long before we get someone moaning about leaky defence?
Another extremely professional performance fellas, especially after all the travelling of our non English internationals.
Forza...everyone connected with our club!
TTFN
Another 3pts today. Well done lads! Great game from Micah, get in there son! MOTD. Let's get ready for Napoli and qualify for last 16 in Champs. Come on City!
Its simple isnt it, for a delicious no nonsense end product just add water. Or, if you apply the same simple recipe for success to football - just add David Silva............Please can the makers of "The Simpsons" green light an advert featuring our Spanish sorcerer showing off his skills before cutting to a City shirt wearing Homer drooling - "mmmmmmmmmmm.......Silva"............basically im picturing a slight twist on that bit with the babysitter and the Gummy Venus di Milo.............Oh, memories.
Anyway, i dont think ive seen a more instant and aesthetically eye catching impact since my old boss turned up at work sporting his debut syrup - a lovely centre parted piece that was only two shades different to the rest of his remaining hair. Wayne Rooney could learn a thing or two from that man..............Point is, Silva took appoximatly 0.5 seconds to show why he is the most watchable player in the League, seriously - where is that new 7 year contract............
Great performance from the lads and also credit to Newcastle who played some really good football and to be honest deserved to get that consolation - I thought Milner and Clichey were fantastic today, lets all hope to the sky blue heavens that Kun Kun just had a touch of cramp at the end there..........
On a side note id like to mention that not ONE pre match report was accurate regarding the availability of Samir Nasri. According to one paper ive definitely left it too late to do my Christmas shopping as apparently the frenchman wasn't going to been seen anywhere near a pitch till December the 18th. Pretty sure he was on a pitch for 90 minutes today so either id better start looking for my girlfriends dream ironing board cover first thing tomorrow or shock horror the pre match research was once again truly pathetic.............
Its amazing to me that this idiot Capello doesnt pick Richards at right back, he would rather pick a big dummy like Smalling ,not even a full back, cos he plays for United and then another centre half, JOnes , who suddnely plucked from a crap Blackburn team, is suddenly a World beater at full back when he is in fact a centre half, just because he plays from ferguson, talk about a red bias? Plus the worse defensive international full back I think I have ever seen in Johnson, wow did Richards say something wrong? He is maturing into one of the best players in the league.
Wow. Reading that report makes it sound like we were lucky to get away without being soundly beaten.
Another outstanding performance from the Blue Warriors, City are storming ahead. Looking ahead: Im going for seven wins out of seven. We can't let anyone get in the way of progress.
Well done Micah! Nuff said!!!
31/33
City blue moon still rising , one of the best performance of the season , controlled play , dominated midfiled , unfotrunately sloppy goal lost , but 3 goals again , we just keep on rising - to all rags what can you sat now - Newcastle was only unbeaten team with City and we shown them .. Still nealry safe 40 points for City in the next 3 weeks .. MOM was Toure
Always difficult after the international break but we did enough to earn the 3 points. We worked very hard when we didn't have the ball and MIlner and de Jong were tireless in closing space down and getting tackles in. Clichy very solid too - excellent display. At times going forward the football was superb and only a mixture of over elaborance and bad luck kept the scoreline respectable. Newcastle were no pushovers and created some good chances and fully deserved their goal. Every City player worked their socks off for the team today.
Hope Aguero hasn't aggravated his injury.
Well done to Mr Spencer and his 3-1 prediction. I'm going for a 2-0 win over Napoli. Napoli will be licking their wounds while we celebrate by licking Napoli ice cream.
Trust me, if you live in and around Manchester, you can't possibly be enjoying this as much as someone like me. For the last 30 years I have been totally outnumbered by rags - about 60 to 1 is close. 30 years of dealing with these smug, arrogant armchairs has been extremely taxing on my mind, constantly trying to think up weaknesses and a new angles of rag-attack in conversation, always outnumbered and always avoiding talking too much about City's current hopeless league position and form, usually deflecting the argument to things like -'its only because you've got the money'.
Recently something very unusual seems to have happened. No longer am I searching for original debating points. Take a few minutes ago. I was listening to the match on the radio when the electric ran out, so at 2-0 I had to walk to the nearest supplier, getting there at 4.55. "Did City win do you know?", I asked the cashier (having the radio on in the background) "Yes unfortunately they did" he replied. "Why do you support Newcastle?" I asked "No United" he said. Well there's no thinking needed and only two words which must to be said to that anewer these days... "6-1".
Thank you my dearest Blues for allowing me yet another post-match evening of sheer pleasure...and not a few Bells and vino.
Not to criticise, just two observations: we can be horribly exposed to high crosses and Joe Hart's distribution still leaves a lot to be desired - possession too often needlessly given away. Both problems could cost us dear in the hard fixtures coming fast.
WELL DONE BLUES & BOBBY !
A great result, but yet a moment of lapsed concentration on conceeding..
MILNER & RICHARDS were AWESOME !!
I must mention Joe Hart - he was outstanding and saved any blushes ...
WELL DONE BLUES
GLAZERS FOREVER
CITY FOR LIFE !!!
Another professional performance by my beloved citizens.... I was watching a dvd of our 2001-2002 season back to the premiership the other evening and have to pinch myself when i look at our squad now, back then we had a defence containing the likes of: gerard wiekens, lauren charvet, richard edgehill, stuart pearce(a legend to be fair but past his best by the time we got him), danny granville, danny tiatto, etc.... It really doesnt compare to our squad now....
I am still on cloud 9 but like most city fans still humble with my feet on the ground.... Bring on Napoli tuesday.... In Roberto we trust....
A brrrrilliant 3 - 1 WIN against the 'barcodes', even if we had two penalties.
Next ........ beat the 'icecreams' and 'the pool', before we get into December
and I will be looking forward to a very merry City Christmas ! ! !
Come ON City !
Damn it the Swans are one nil down.
1-0 from a probably offside Hernandez. Then park the bus for 90 minutes. Bet Guardiola is having sleepless nights!
Silvaware is coming...
Business as usual, onward and upwards, pip pip!
