Manchester City

Blues run-in prediction

MANCHESTER City boss Kevin Keegan aims to field his strongest team possible for the remainder of this season, despite calls for the City youngsters to be given a chance.

Here, ManchesterOnline considers the Blues' remaining fixtures to predict how many points Keegan's men could end up with.

Norwich City (A) 28/02/05

City only managed a disappointing draw against Norwich at the City of Manchester Stadium and will be eager to register at least one win against the Canaries. However, Nigel Worthington's side will be battling hard for survival and have shown impressive spirit of late.

MOL prediction: Draw

Bolton Wanderers (H) 07/03/05

Wanderers have resurrected their season after severe pre-Christmas blip - during which City beat them - and are once again a force to be reckoned with. City have won their last three home games against Bolton though, hammering them 6-2 last season, so can go into the game with confidence.

MOL Prediction: Win

Tottenham Hotspur (A) 19/03/05

White Hart Lane was the scene of possibly the greatest FA Cup comeback of all time when the Blues beat Tottenham 4-3 last season. Lightning seldom strikes twice though, and the Blues have a tought task down in the capital.

MOL Prediction: Loss

Charlton Athletic (A) 02/04/05

City hammered Charlton 4-0 back in August, and won 3-0 the last time they were at The Valley. Whether they will be able to win so comfortably this time around is doubtful given the Addicks solid campaign, but they should leave with something.

MOL Prediction: Draw

Liverpool (H) 09/04/05

City have only beaten Liverpool once in the last 10 years - when Nicolas Anelka picked the Anfield side's pocket with two late goals in 2003. Rafael Benitez' side have not looked convincing so far this season, but the team contains real quality and Fernando Morientes has added a cutting edge.

MOL Prediction: Loss

Fulham (A) 16/04/05

City have a good record against Fulham, not losing since 1998. Both sides have similar aspirations in the Premiership so this game should be a tight one.

MOL Prediction: Draw

Birmingham City (H) 20/04/05

The Blues lost 1-0 down at St Andrews earlier this season when Emile Heskey's early header decided the contest. It will probably be a close game, but definitely the type City should be looking to pick up maximum points from.

MOL prediction: Win

Blackburn Rovers (A) 23/04/05

Blackburn manager Mark Hughes seems to have settled in at Rovers and they will prove a tough test for City. The last time the Blues visited Ewood Park they snatched a 3-2 win courtesy of Anelka's last-gasp winner.

MOL Prediction: Draw

Portsmouth (H) 30/04/05

Looking back, City's 3-1 victory at Fratton Park earlier this season has been one of their most impressive results. Pompey are a dangerous team, but they do not travel too well and City should be looking to do the double over them.

MOL Prediction: Win

Aston Villa (A) 07/05/05

City dispatched Villa comfortably at the City of Manchester Stadium with a 2-0 win. Villa are a different prospect at home though, having only lost three league games there all season.

MOL Prediction: Loss

Middlesbrough (H) 14/05/05

City have not beaten Boro since December 1997 and Steve McClaren's men have won the last three encounters. The hex has to end some time, and the last day of the season in front of a home crowd should be the perfect place to do it.

MOL Prediction: Win

Projected points total: 49

49 points....you should be working as Tony Blair's press secretary .... I sold my spreadbet at 47 points after the West Brom fiasco last month and I was very glad to get out then. Given the lack of quality in the Keegan constructed squad (we have say 6 Premiership standard players), the fact we have nothing to play for, the fact that kids who would be desperate to impress are being frozen out (this is the manager who scrapped Newcastle's reserve team!), and the fact that the inept KK is going soon, I wouldn't expect many more points than 40. Another season of mid table obscurity. KEEGAN OUT NOW - Wardle, make a positive decision.

WHAT....
were going to win them all and finish 4 for champs league.
come on city you can do it.

Strongest team available, so does that mean macca, Sibs and macken won't be playing.

Report This Reply

get real - we will stay up but not reach 40 points

Get real, this is City we're talking about. Absolutely no point in trying to predict how City will perform. May as well pick a number out of a hat between 40 and 60 and you'll have a better idea.

Given that our strongest team is full of youngsters strongly support this policy as the dross in the shape of Reyna, Macca, Sommeil & other purchases aren't even good enough for the reserves. Would like to see Ian Dowie become our first summer signing.

I agree with earlier comment, strongest team- is Sibierski to be put in the reserves to contribute nothing there??

Would KK allow the text supporter's to pick the best team for one game?.He tells us the game and we'll choose the team.

As usual, MOL predictions are far too optimistic.

The main problem is that, thanks to KK we do not have a decent striker on the books. As was demonstrated against Utd. If we go a goal down usually there is no way back.

If KK persists in playing the same team till the end of the season then my predictions are.

Norwich.(A). Loss. Total Points. 0.
Bolton. (H). Draw. Total Points. 1.
Spurs. (A). Loss. Total Points. 1.
Charlton. (A). Draw. Total Points. 2.
L'pool. (H). Loss. Total Points. 2.

Thus far we have 2 out of 15 points.

Fulham. (A). Draw. Total Points. 3.
Brum. (H). Win!!! Total Points. 6.
Blackburn (A). Loss Total Points. 6.
Portsmouth(H).Win Total Points. 9

We have just passed the 40 point mark, with 2 games in hand.

Villa. (A). Loss. Total Points. 9.
Boro. (H). Draw. Total Points. 10.

This gives us a grand Total of 43 points.

What makes things even worse is that KK is talking as if he is thinking of staying on for a final season.

Get off the backs of KK, in fact he is one of the better, if not the best manager since 1980, bar Kendall/Reid/Royle..KK 's downfall is his high expectation for this club and subsequently our expectations were brought to an artifical high that when results turned against us, we turned our frustration on him...come on City fans, look at the run-in programs and we should be thankful that we are seeing EPL teams and not Championship teams...like us, I can see the hurt on his face when we lost to rags, what KK is trying to build is a class team and not a workaholic team, but ideally he should blend them together...the only problem I am seeing is the forwards are playing too far defensively...this is alright if the forwards are young and fast, but certainly not right for RF....

Report This Reply

Too optimistic... The problem lies in trying to win matches. We need to score more goals than we concede. Our defence is sound but the midfield ... SWP apart ... is predictable and the forwards couldn't burst a paper bag. Take away SWP and we struggle for match winners. Play the kids. They can't be any worse than the other lot ahead of them.

Come off it, how on earth can you predict results when city are involved. We could probably go and beat spurs, then lose at Norwich. I'd put city to finish on about 42 points. Can't see the players being up for it for the remaining eleven games, and can't see Keegan inspiring them.

UI can see one win from now till the end of the season to add to the 1 win in the last 7. We will be on the verge of a win in a couple of the other games and then a comdey own goal or suicidal lack of concentration will cost us the game. I will be stunned if we score more than 5 goals between now and the end of the season - unless Dunne is played upfront.

Why can't some City fans understand the following:
!) Keegan will not resign without a pay off.
2) City can't afford a settlement of at least 1.5 mill to Keegan and his staff.
3) No quality player will come to a club with the manager on
the way out
4) Even our board will not allow
Keegan to sign players on more than a 1 year loan deal and what kind af player will we get on that basis?
5)In our situation we will be unable to sign the two quality
strikers we will need to stay in the Premiership next season.
Sadly, this is the Keegan legacy.

Until the last game of the season, Kevin Keegan is right to try and win as many games as possible, the higher up the table more rewards for the club.
But still think that some youngsters have to be tried or they will want to leave to get first team football, if they fail in their effort we will understand, but to be off without a fair chance thats what concerns me.
The club spent a lot of time and money producing some brilliant youngsters we have to keep the best.

The truth is many of us feel that some bright young stars might not get their chance to play.
But if Kevin Keegan holds good to the "strongest team will be put on the field" it can only motivate players to get into the team, but if youngters are overlooked when they are considered better, then that could be bad for morale.
If K K stays true to his word then it will be for the best.

Come on you BLUES its up to YOU.

Have to agree with the chap who said that you may as well pull a number between forty and sixty out of a hat rather than seriously try to predict City's remaining results. I thought we'd win the opener against Fulham, and we drew, that the derby at Old Trafford would be a heavy defeat, and we drew, and that Portsmouth would put up a real show in Harry's departure game against us, but we hammered them 3-1! The Portsmouth game I watched at home on telly, and we ran them into the ground with a great display, our most complete performance of the season in fact. One of the key players in that victory was Nedum Onuoha, which brings me onto another point that the initial question on this topic posed: Keegan saying that some of the youngsters need to "earn" their place. This is ludicrous. Onuoha was scandalously discarded after that game, and must have been heartbroken. If he didn't "earn" a starting place in the games since, then how the hell could McMananaman have "earned" five starting call ups this season?! He has done NOTHING, yet he continues to "earn" obscene and inordinate amounts of money from a debt ridden club for sitting on the bench most of the time. Until Keegan gives our youth a chance on a regular basis, we'll continue to perform erratically and our results will continue to be unpredictable. This is a great shame, the fans really do deserve better. Pay Keegan off and replace him with Bobby Robson in the summer. I'm fed up with seeing players who patently don't care bleeding the club dry. The only thing I'm going to predict for this season is that we'll get over 47000 for every home game! I just read on BBC-Football that City are in the top 20 world's richest clubs. I'm not so worried about going down as there are atleast 3 clubs worse than City in the Prem. However, with the weakest strike force and a mediocre midfield I wonder just how committed the club is to proving that they are worthy of being in the top 20 list. This club has a lot of potential but still seems to be run by a bunch of amateurs. The only one who has stood out as an ,the last 10 years, at the board level was Bernstein. If we can get his level of professionalism on the board I'm sure it would follow on the pitch - players should be wanting to play for one of the worlds top 20 clubs in the Prem. And no, I'm not going to predict anything about our club management as that's where all the unpredictability stems from !!!!

I can,t see where the goals are going to come from ?therefore I think we will lose against ,spurs, charlton, blackburn and liverpool -win against portsmouth and draw the rest- a total of 9pts gained finishing on 42 pts now for this weeks lottery numbers?

Theory does not win you points and whoever wrote this piece of rubbish hasn't took into consideration the lack of goals in our team. Furthermore Keegans reluctance and adamance not to play the youngsters is tearing most of us apart and quite frankly it will in my opinion destroy the present structure Jim Cassell and his staff have built,it will be a start all over again process when these present crop of potentially great players fade away that Im sure but when it does happen the person who created will have gone. For the rest of the current season Keegans team should be James, Onuoha,Dunne,Distin,Jordan,SWP,Croft,Barton,Bosvelt,Lusampa,BWP & Macken. finally a few weeks ago Karl Bermingham scored 4 goals against Utd in a reserve fixture to add to his impressive tally, his reward? LOANED OUT TO LINCOLN CITY!

ted knott, Our deffence is one of the best in the Prem why change it. Nedum is not a full back anyway, he was all over the place against Arsenal, he will get his chance at centre back in due course and like Flood and BWP must be drip fed into the Prem. We do have a crop young player of high potential coming through but lets see how they develope
over the next 2 or 3 years before getting too exited.

Agree with CSB , EC4 that we will not reach 40 points. I hope that 33 points is enough to stay up. Are Southampton and or Norwich and or Crystal Palace capable of getting 14 points from their remaining 11 games? The answer is yes. My firm belief is that at the absolute best case scenario is the 18th team will finish with 36 points but more than likely closer to 40 so it is touch and go for our survival.

If we persist in picking our 'strongest' team we will beat Bolton , draw with Birmingham , Villa and Portsmouth and finish with 39 points (gulp !)

Knowing City, anything could happen! We could go on to win all our games or lose them all! One thing is that we are almost certainly safe but I suspect that we will struggle to stay in the top half of the table now that Anelka has gone and the teams who were struggling (except from the bottom four who are fighting out the relegation spot) have almost caught up the mid table and we could quite easily end up in the same postion as last season if we don't start scoring. That would pretty much make KK's position untenable.
