Bayern Munich 2 Manchester City 0: Stuart Brennan's verdict

TOUGH NIGHT: Vincent Kompany challenges Mario Gomez
Manchester City may have lost the biggest match of Roberto Mancini’s tenure... but the Blues’ disastrous performance here in the heart of Bavaria was totally overshadowed by an act of incredible petulance by Carlos Tevez.

He effectively went on strike after being asked to come on early in the second-half in what was an unprecedented act of defiance by the £40m striker.

The flashpoint incident led manager Mancini to later declare that Tevez would never play for the club again if he had his way.

It was an devastating way to round off a night that had begun with such high hopes for City and their 3,000 travelling army of fans.

The Blues had lapped up the legendary Oktoberfest, but it was Mancini and his team who ended up with a monster-sized Champions League hangover.

The Blues were left punch-drunk by some sloppy first-half defending – and some even sloppier refereeing - as Bayern kept their red-hot streak going.

It was a harsh lesson for the Blues, and one they will have to learn quickly if their dreams of a good run in the competition are not to disperse like Autumn mists.

UEFA also need to take a look at last night’s game, because their new-fangled idea of having extra officials behind the goals appears to have hit a snag, not least because all six officials showed an inability to see what was in front of their eyes.

Yet the evening had started so brightly for Mancini’s men.

Faced with a noisy capacity crowd at the Allianz Arena, City made a strong and confident opening, passing the ball and keeping Bayern penned in.

But the good work was undone when David Silva burst into the box and pulled the ball back from the by-line only to have his feet taken away by former team-mate Jerome Boateng.

Hungarian referee Viktor Kassai allowed play to go on as Silva leapt to his feet, but he should have awarded a spot-kick.

City were undaunted and continued to stretch Bayern left and right. Another swift passing move ended with Edin Dzeko playing a one-two with Micah Richards but firing the shot tamely at Manuel Neuer.

Samir Nasri was also causing problems, drifting past defenders with ease, but unable to find a final product.

The Blues deserved something for their enterprising start but were again denied as Micah Richards tested Boateng’s pace and was clipped as he shot past him in the area. Again Mr Kassai bottled the decision.

Decisions

The decisions, or lack of them, took some of the steam out of City’s bold opening, and Bayern gradually exerted control and had them back on their heels, showing the kind of ability which has seen them now win their last ten games without conceding.

City’s defence, so good in the run-in to the end of last season, was found wanting at this level, not least in the basic art of following in opposition shots from distance. At times it looked like they had been out sampling the hospitality at Europe’s biggest drinking festival.

Bayern were beginning to pepper Joe Hart’s goal, and the danger signs were there when the keeper had to beat away shots by Franck Ribery and Bastian Schweinsteiger.

There was another strong warning when Bayern – who boasted six of the Germany team which blew away England in the 2010 World Cup finals – almost staged an embarrassing re-enactment.

Kolo Toure’s ill-advised gallop upfield, followed by him coughing up possession, left Ribery one-on-one against Gareth Barry. The Frenchman skinned his opponent did the same, but this time Muller’s shot deflected over.

City were exposed again as Yaya Toure and Barry fluffed an interchange of passes and in a four-on-three attack Muller crossed for Schweinsteiger, totally unmarked, only for him to sky his shot well over  the bar. City were close to breaking point, and the inevitable goal came in the 38th minute.

Ribery darted inside from the left flank and took a pot-shot which Hart parried. First man to react was Muller, whose follow-up shot was brilliantly kept out by the keeper.

Unfortunately for City, second man to react was Mario Gomez, who defied another brave Hart attempt to save to score.

In added time, the Blues were stung again. This time it was a Toni Kroos free-kick which was glanced goalwards by ex-Blue Daniel van Buyten.Hart’s reaction was exemplary, that of his defence non-existent as Gomez darted in to convert the rebound.

Boateng had said in the build-up that City were a squad in disharmony, something which their performances so far this season might disprove.

But the scenes when Mancini removed striker Edin Dzeko added fuel to Boateng’s fire.

While Dzeko reacted with visible disgust, arguing with Mancini and subs Tevez and Pablo Zabaleta, Tevez himself refused to take to the field.

While City digested the ramifications of that bombshell, Hart first kept out Schweinsteiger  before another great save denied Gomez his hat-trick.

But by then all the attention was focused elsewhere... typical City some might say.

What is your verdict? Have your say.

On all counts this was bad. Too many things were wrong to blame this on any one problem. Hopefully this does not see City spiral out of control.

We played really well for the first 30 minutes and had all the possession and made Bayern run all over the place. However, our finishing wasn't good enough (especially from Dzeko) so when we sloppily let two goals in it knocked our confidence and Bayern then bossed it. Fine - I could live with that.

Roberto tried to improve things by taking the underperfoming Dzeko off, replacing him with De Jong to stiffen midfield and get Ya Ya moving forward in support of Aguero. Good plan. Dzeko was upset but so what - he should have played better.

Roberto then tried to get Tevez on which was the next logical move - but the greedy little Argentinian backstabber decided he wanted to play his childish games and refused. Result? The team quickly sank into disarray and we were lucky to hold on to just a two-goal deficit. In the space of a few minutes the Argentinian child (I can't call him a man) has set us back to where we were a year and a half ago, with the media licking their lips at an assumed 'crisis' City must act quickly - come out and support the manager by dropping the child from any City team, stop paying his wages and make sure he can't play for any other team for the length of his contract. Oh, and also sue him for breach of contract. If I turned up to work and refused to work I'd be sacked straight away - so should he. No excuses. I will NEVER accept seeing him in a City shirt ever again.

If city had been given that 3rd min penalty it would have been a different game. But we should have known we are the new kids on the block & are not going to be given them decisions.

not the end of the world, met a team who are on the crest of a wave and although did not play well we are not out of the competition yet! too many players did not turn up, got beat by the better team on the night, let's recover for weekend and bounce back with a win.
tevez, you are shocking!

Dear Carlos,

We don't want you at Inter, so please don't bother asking to come to our club.
We only like players who respect the shirt.

Ciao.

It wasn't the biggest match of Mancini's reign. It was no bigger than Napoli (H) or Villareal (A) will be. The biggest match was the cup final.

We lost an away game to one of the best sides in Europe and our 4th choice striker proved himself to be a selfish oik. Our best striker Edin, was understandably annoyed at being subbed but he's a good lad and won't go flouncing off to his agent then demand a transfer.

No crisis. We're joint top of the league and qualification to the CL knockout stages is till in our hands.

Roll on Saturday, Rovers will be a lot easier to deal with than Bayern

rnt over with we were shocking in defence except hart, how can both goals come from follow ups the first after 2 tremendous saves and still no marking

stop tevez wages and get him in the juniors till the end of his contract should not pay him another dime because he has broken the contract

i say instead typical uefa referee because the two penalty not given to man city before on silva and then on micah richards are incredible, but i know the mafia uefa and it's too clear that they want push away all english clubs they have always done all the latest years in champions league,vs bayern also the fiorentina took a goal one metre in offside because who know the football knows that the uefa and fifa are checked by germans spanish and france mafia all vs too great premier league clubs the best league in the world so far.then about tevez mancini has all the reasons he's a too poor player about behaviour and so he must not more play absolutely,he brings only problems in the dressing room.anyway we will go in the next stage i'm sure we will win the next 2 matches vs villareal and we will vs naples away or we will win vs bayern at home.came on city!!!!

Putting the Tevez issue to one side and dismissing Dzeko's reaction as sheer frustration at his own poor performance, the fact is that Kolo is not as good as Lescott and RM made an error there.

For me though the big problem is, and I have said this before, in midfield where we don't have a player like Gerrard, Gattuso, Lampard, Iniesta, I know these are all different types of players but they are mega-midfielders who can influence a game and can get from box to box, we don't have that, Barry and Yaya, good though they are are not quite up there for me, Milner might be a better prospect given an chance, i don't know, but for me we need that midfield giant.

Stuart Brennan, many thanks for acknowledging the extremely biased ref decisions made by Viktor Kassai and his band of deaf, dumb & blind (or corrupt) officials for this match! If City had been given the 2 penalties they most clearly should have had, the game might have been a draw. Viktor Kassai has a history of bad ref decisions... I still remember how Kassai altered the final results of the USA vs Ghana match, as well as other clear mistakes he's made in the past. Bad refs like Kassai are just more proof that football desperately needs the impartiality of the digital replay. Questionable ref decisions are ruining many of the matches worldwide. Managers are fined if they complain about the bad ref calls, so it's left to the media and the fans to fight for any changes to the system. Even if all the refs were fair and unbiased, human error will always occur. Instant replays work very well for so many other sports... It's time that every football association should opt for greater fairness through the use of digital technology for contested calls!

Bayern got as far forwards as they could for the goals and our defence were left looking over their shoulders.

Firstly, Bayern are a very good side, especially at home and City aren't the first, and won't be the last, team to go there and get a working over. For the first half hour we were the better team, goals do change games and City should have had a penalty in the third minute. That would really have changed this game. The Bayern central pairing looks very vulnerable to me, but it was our back line which nullified the benefit of a good first half hour. They allowed Schweinsteiger to run in and, thankfully, sky a chance from six yards out. Then they stood and admired Joe Hart's heroics rather than giving him any assistance. Worst of all was the mess they made to concede in stoppage time - again despite splendid goalkeeping from Joe. This meant that Bayern could pass the ball around at leisure in the second half, our midfield was swamped and we just couldn't get the ball. I was one of those who agreed absolutely with Mancini's decision to bring on de Jong - I didn't know who to take off, but for me it couldn't be a midfielder or that would leave us just as short. Edin was NOT playing badly and I understand and sympathise with the frustration of someone not wanting to come off. But by then we simply couldn't get enough ball to bring Edin or Sergio into the game for all the selfless running both were doing David Silva was doing his best to be our ball winner! What I cannot understand, ever, or sympathise with, ever, is a player who refuses to come ON. There were three generations of my family watching the game last night, 3000 in the Allianz and countless thousands elsewhere, who would crawl bare handed and bare footed over broken glass just for the chance to play for City. Carlos Tevez must never be allowed near a City player again. The club must support our manager, whose commitment has never been in doubt. Not a good night and we may not emerge from the group stages, but we have to mark it down to experience and come out with renewed determination and enthusiasm on Saturday.

Your development in the Premier League was, and to a certain degree still is, a work in progress. However, the Champions League is a different matter. You have a lot of players with experience in Europe but not of playing together as a unit at that level. It will come in time and when it does you will find it easier at places like Bayern.

However, at any time, losing away to Bayern Munich is nothing to be ashamed of.

For 30 mins we looked comfortable. Should have had at least one pen, created an opening that Edin should have put his through. Then to be honest we were outmuscled by a better team, probably one of the best in Europe and on their own pitch. 2-0 flattered them at half-time. At 1-0 we were still in it. After that I'd have taken 2-0 at full time because they looked the more likely to score and goal difference could count. On the pitch, nowhere near the disaster it has been portrayed as.

Off the pitch was very disappointing but in the age of media intrusion, all gets seen. Dzeko should be given a dressing down. Had he connected with his first chance things wouuld have been different. As for the situation with Carlos, words fail me. If the relationship is that bad then why was he even on the bench. CT says he was ready to play, RM says he refused. Who knows, but it needs sorting out quickly.

The good news is by the time Bayern come to us in December they should have qualified so should be a dead rubber for them .We must beat Villareal both games then at least a point away at Napoli & at home to Bayern ,should be enough !!Oh and last night could be a blessing in disguise if we learn the lessons for KO phase !!

When the hysteria dies down the simple fact remains City have lost ONE match 2-0. A match they may have lost 9 times out of 10.
Mancini says we need 10 points................so lets go and get them from the 4 remaining games. Do not let our morale sink in this hysterical media frenzie.

Billions are being spent and we shouldn't let a couple of hundred thousand pounds a week get in the way.

wrong to say "disastrous performance" Stuart,

we were very good for 35 minutes and by far the better side

Admittedly we were totally outplayed after that - BUT DISASTROUS IS TOO STRONG A WORD

2-0 away at Munich wasn't even a disastrous result. They are a fantastic side

What was disastrous was all the "OTHER STUFF"

Surely Kolo and Yaya are the new Chuckle Brothers on that performance?

Let's be honest with ourselves we were outclassed in the important areas. The area around the centre of defence, centre backs and holding mid-field, is vital for freedom of front men and attacking instincts of full backs.
Our collection is from;Kompany,Lescott,Barry(paceless,as in South Africa against the Germans),YaYa(interested at times),deJong,Kolo. Can anyone say, honestly, it's possible to pick 4 from them to give us real stength?
In fairness it was widely reported that RM wanted to strengthen this area but was prevented by those abovem Well we are reaping the reward for their intransigence or ignorance.
Sad,we are so close but-------------.
