United landed an early-season blow on their ambitious rivals as they snatched a last-gasp victory in a Wembley thriller.
Yet Kompany, whose mistake led to Nani's injury-time winner, is not concerned about the outcome and expects the FA Cup winners to provide the champions a stern challenge this term.
When asked if the result gave United a psychological edge, the Belgium international said: "No, nothing.
"I'm sure if we would have won United would have said the same. We are very confident.
"We have seen here that even when we do not play our best game we can still be very dangerous. It was really close regardless.
"We have got a lot of potential and much to improve. Come the league, the Champions League and the FA Cup we will be ready. We are a strong team, an organised team.
"We might not have been it today, but we are going to be for the future."
City are expected to build on last season's success to make a strong push for the Barclays Premier League title.
They begin their campaign against promoted Swansea at the Etihad Stadium next Monday.
Kompany added: "It would have been nice to win it but the fact we didn't isn't going to change anything for how we have worked towards the Swansea game.
"It is good we have another important 90 minutes in the legs.
"It wasn't our best performance but when we start next Monday, that is going to be the big one. We are going to be ready."
City took command of the game against United with goals late in the first half from Joleon Lescott and Edin Dzeko.
United responded through Chris Smalling before Nani completed a fine team move to level with a superb equaliser.
With no extra time to be played, a penalty shoot-out loomed until Nani dispossessed Kompany near the halfway line in the fourth minute of injury time and raced clear to score.
It was a rare error from the normally reliable Kompany, who captained the team and is expected to be handed the role full time in place of Carlos Tevez.
"It happens," said Kompany. "You play centre-half, that is a lot of responsibility.
"Sometimes it goes your way and sometimes it doesn't. It's part of what football is about.
"I'll move on now to the next game. That's what I've always done."
The season ahead promises to be an exciting one for City with the club competing in the Champions League for the first time after finishing third last term.
Kompany said: "Every competition we start this season will be a priority for us.
"We are excited because it's a big season ahead we have been working hard.
"Come Monday it will be a big kick-off for us.
"But now is not the time to give big talk. We have to be ready for the Swansea game."

1 mistake in 12 months means nothing. Kompany is a top player and will become a top captain for us. C.T.I.D
Team Spirit 3 Mercenaries 2
Dear Vinnie, remember: the faster you'll forget yesterday's game the sooner you'll become the great Captain of the Invincible Blues! CTWD
Next time Vinny put your foot through the ball instead of trying to be clever.
We cant blame Vinny though, we deserved to get beat thanks to Bobby Mancs tactics.
As soon as the rags got the equaliser, he decides to take off Balotelli for Barry
born captain this boy will not let sundays slip get to him, i would not bet on swansea citys centre forward having much of a site of goal!!!!
Oh Monsieur Kompany.....
Denial ain't just a river in Egypt.
Beware lest you lose the substance by grasping at the shadow.
Yes well it may have meant nothing to the players but it meant a hell of a lot to the fans. To lose to the rags at anytime is depressing, but to lose at Wembley is massive. On top of that the performance was nowhere near satisfying. How these statements can be qualified from a man with Vincent's intelligence is staggering, and I just hope we can see a massive improvement starting next week. Please remember losing to the rags hurts, it really hurts and I'm sure their fans feel the same when they lose to us. About time the players got more in tune with our feelings.
Vinny you can hold your head high because you are a stalwart in the sky blue shirt & we all could see the mistake hurt you, but have no fear pal cos we are behind you all the way you have a fantastic attitude & for me your one of the best defenders in europe, so head up fella we are looking forward to you wearing the armband & leading us out in the new season !!! CTID BELIEVE.
Thes things happen Vinnie. Still got love for ya. Your are the Captain.
If Carlos stays or goes,Vincent HAS to be captain.
CTID
No-City were poor and yet still only lost in the 94th minute from a mistake by our most competent Captain......so if we were good,by definition we would have won.....we lost, get over it,it is not first or last time the Rags will beat us.....Forza Roberto.....
Shut up and concentrate on the game for 95 minutes
It was a fun day out. It won't be long before united are using the shield as a begging plate.
The fun's over and the serious stuff start's soon.
beaten by the better side, and scoreline flattered city, but it was a pre-season friendly, not the cup final, or premiership game.
lets hope we learn by the mistakes. and move on. may be a blessing in disguise...
Look on the brightside Kompany at least there was only a handfull at City fans at the match to see your howler.
Lets hope that the performance yesterday was a one off. Too many of the team didn't turn up. I know someone will say we only lost to a bad mistake from Kompany, but overall we were well beaten.Balotteli should be on the bench on Monday after a woeful performance, Yaya wasn't much better,Clichy did nothing when he came on and De Jong had a bad hair day, did Barry come on at some stage?
But I still think we will come good once the league starts. We must get a comprehencive win over Swansea to kick start us and move from there. Come on CITY.
There is a thing called Cititis. I think you should read Paul Lakes autobiography to understand it.
I used to be a City sharedholder. I attended the AGMs and found most supporters tolerant and good nattured and understanding. So disregarding the bitters this is what I think.
City were the top team in Manchester, although in the 1900s United bought most of City's team, and won things. Then United became so bad they were called the rags, but City were only relatively better. After the war United became a household name thanks to Busby. So City got Mercer to do the same job, which he did.
But City could not leave it at that so they put Allison in charge he bankrupted them, and they have carried on bankrupting themselves ever since, until they have found someone with a bottomless pocket. But the old culture is still there.
Where is the problem. It is not chairmen most of whom worked hard and lost money as did the shareholders Nor the managers they can't all have been bad,nor the players who come and go season after season. Nor the loyal long suffering supporters.
So who created and sustained this culture.?
I knew a young player discarded by City who signed for a lowly club.He was due to play but had a double compound fracture of his leg in training. His manager took him to a private clinic saying the NHS was not good enough for a footballer. Compare that with what happened to Paul Lake.
It could have been worst maybe in a semi ,are well thats the rub of the green.Vinny just make sure it dosent happen again.
Don't get caught up in the rag hype on here. We lost the shield - the most insignificant match of the season. For some reason the team didn't play well - it happens - its football. Remember WBA? Roberto knows what he is doing - keep the faith - the season is long.
The only mistake Vinny made was to not clean everything out. Ball, Nani everything. Even if he`d received a red for it, it was so late it wouldn`t have mattered.
The main error was made by Clichey. Vinny was last man, and Clichey, although starting closer to the dropping ball, backed away from it leaving his skipper with a mountain to climb. Let`s be kind and call it lack of communication for a newcomer.
All that said however, I don`t think I`ve seen Vinny have a worse game in a City shirt. He looked mentally and physically off the pace, and he was far from alone in that.
Outplayed, outclassed, outfought and out thought and still we get the pompous boasts which are never ever backed up.
To quote the Bard "Told by an idiot, full of sound and fury signifying nothing"
Back in your box Berties!
Lets be realistic here... United were overdue a win at Wembly and the last time they played there they were absolutely humiliated.
What really gets to me is that as a City fan over over 50 years standing we get caught in injury time again, again and again.
I watched it in a bar in my village and could have cried.
I wasn't surprised by yesterday's result, which is probably why I had no real enthusiasm for the game - even so I did go.
We knew that the rags would play down it's importance all week - just in case - and we all should know by now that any game they win is the equivalent of the World Championship status. ( Don't think there is a rag where I work that has mentioned getting to the CL final yet never mind what happened in the game)
Thank goodness Vincent has got game out of his system , he wasn't the only one I thought NDJ had a bad day at the office. Yaya had obviously not recovered full fitness (although I'm not sure that term ever really applies to him.) from the knock he got in the states. Just as devil's advocate was the tackle Ballotelli which Mr Dowd ignored as bad as it looked from our distance - if so may explain the substitution, and despite what has been said GB actually steadied the ship and improved the keeping of the ball. Last season we couldn't buy a preseason win this year we have been much better, it that means very little I would prefer to be better from next week onwards. This old chestnut about winning the Community Shield leads to the Premier League has only been for the past 5 or 6 years so lets put that twaddle on the dung heap with all the other 'truisms'.
To be honest getting upset about yesterday would have felt like getting upset about a testimonial result. Let them have their day in the sun, they will be fewer and farther between in the years to come.
Game over, finished, move on lets just look forward to next week real football action.
Just one plea - lets drop the 'Carlos Tevez is a blue song,' as well as 'the Fergie sign him up'. I think he derserves a very cool reception from us, as he made it clear he wants to leave. nothing lost in translation. So if he takes to the pitch lets treat him with the indifference he has shown us all summer. Seems only fair to me.
Lets move on, it's not the first or last team we'll get beaten by Utd, the best team won on the day, no doubt about that.
I sense, at last, United are paying us respect by treating this as a Cup final, their passing and movement on and off the ball was far superior than ours, unless we introduce some speed and creativity into our side apart from Silva, we will not be as dominant as we would like, we cannot just stroll into games and expect to win, we were very fortunate to go two up against the run of play. Our Play was rather too predictable !
This game was played in the manner of a majority of games last season, sitting back, absorbing the pressure, and hoping to hit teams on the break, all very well in theory, but a smart cookie like Ferguson will change the system and introduce speedy and skilful players to counteract our gameplan as proved yesterday, when we spent the whole game chasing the ball.
What I want to see is, rather than worry about what the opposition is going to do , why not let them worry about US by attacking them. You could see in the CL Final, that Utd played the same way as City did yesterday and were slaughtered, thats why Fergie gave instructions to attack at every opportunity instead of parking the bus like when they played us last season.
The only way to beat Utd is to attack them like Barca, teams who sit back and try to avoid defeat will be beaten, hence the reason why they have won so many titles in the Premier league, but not many European Cups, because the foreign teams don't fear them or their reputation !
Most teams have lost against Utd before the match has even started a la Wolves, because they simply do not BELIEVE they can win. If teams change their tactics when they play against Utd this season, by taking the game to Utd and attacking them, instead of just defending, Utd will not gain as many points they have won against teams in the past. Just BELIEVE, ATTACK, ATTACK and ATTACK ! because their defence is suspect and their keeper is rather inexperienced, he will cost Utd quite a few points this season, just wait and see!
Even gary neville said,
"that will be VK's one and only error all season, City will be challenging United for the PL, no two ways about it..."
