Manchester City weigh up options after Carlos Tevez bombshell

Sergio Aguero and Karim Benzema

City will consider swap deals for some of Europe’s top stars if they allow Carlos Tevez to go.

The Blues are remaining calm after Tevez’s announcement on Monday that he wants to leave Eastlands, and say he will only go if another club comes up with their £40million-plus valuation.

They have reminded Tevez that he still has three years to run, and that he will only be allowed to leave if the deal suits the Blues.

Tevez’s price tag is clearly beyond the means of most clubs, with perhaps only Chelsea and Real Madrid able to meet the valuation – and Chelsea would not be acceptable as a destination for Tevez, who wants to play in Spain or Italy.

That opens up several possibilities for City, who are putting feelers out for possible replacements, including Atletico Madrid’s Sergio Aguero.

The Atletico Madrid striker has said he will not decide on his future until after the Copa America, where he is starring alongside Tevez.

But if Real Madrid do put together a cash-only deal for Tevez, Aguero would be a natural replacement – and would no longer be targeted by Real.

Real have been installed as favourites to land Tevez, but they would prefer to include a player in any deal – as Tevez would be likely to displace Gonzalo Higuain and push Karim Benzema further down the pecking order at Bernabeu.

City boss Roberto Mancini revealed at the weekend that a possible swap deal with Inter Milan for Samuel Eto’o recently fell through, but that could be re-examined in light of Tevez’s pronouncement.

Pursuit

There is also the possibility that Dutch midfielder Wesley Sneijder could figure in a deal, as Mancini wants the Inter man to boost the Blues’ Champions League campaign next season.

Barcelona are already on alert for Tevez, and that opens up another intriguing avenue.

The European champions are in hot pursuit of Arsenal’s Cesc Fabregas and long-time City target Alexis Sanchez.

They may be persuaded to ditch their chase for Sanchez as part of a deal for Tevez, leaving City to fight it out with neighbours United for the Udinese winger, currently starring for Chile in the Copa America.

The Blues moved ahead with their latest piece of business yesterday, with Partizan Belgrade defender Stefan Savic passing a medical.

City now need to sort out a work permit for the player but hope to wrap up his £9m transfer in the next 24 hours.

City’s first team returned to training yesterday for three days of medical and fitness tests, plus fitness work, before flying to Los Angeles on Friday.

What do you think? Have your say.

Not really a bombshell, is it, MEN?? I think we've all been expecting this since last December's kerfuffle. Unless, of course, you mean a bombshell in the sense of Richard Hammond being conned out of all his challenge points on Top Gear again.

If we were just to do a straight swap for either Aguero or David Villa, I'd be happy. I'd want some money along with Eto'o or Higuain and Benzema would only knock about £10m off the £50m we rightly want for him so I can't see that happening. I'd still feel slightly ripped off if we got, say, Eto'o, Sneijder and £10m. I can't see anyone wanting to buy him to be honest. Odd that the best striker in the world can't find a club. I just fear he might go on strike like he did when Corinthians tried to stop him going to West Ham

Higuain yes, Benzema no.

Just watching Aguero against Bolivia, only on 3 minutes, what a goal , would definitely be a great asset the way he runs at defences, would be very happy to see him come to city if Teves does go.

Is it £50m or £40m valuation? Should be at least £50m with his goal record! Not Benzema please! I posted yesterday but I dont think it made it through for some reason. If Tevez's family will move to Spain or Italy, pref Spain due to language issues etc, why don't City consider flying him to Spain in a private jet to have 2 days per week living with his family and on FA Cup weekends and Carling Cup midweeks rest him early rounds at least to give him extra time with the family. The journey is only 2 hours ish, no jet lag time diff issues etc. This gives him time with his family in an environment which suits him and them. I know this would make him a special case, but we have already made him a special case with the captaincy. His goal tally also makes him a special case too. As far as cost goes, in this day and age of massive wages it would be a drop in the ocean and would also be cheaper than paying a meassive signing on fee to a new player together with agents fees involved in bringing another player in. If Tevez declined this then we would know for sure that it is about money, not family issues!

carlos tevez has been super for our club !! but lets not turn our pre-season into the carlos tevez show again !!!!!!!!!!!!!! we have all done too much talking about carlos and will he wont he go.

vinny, de jong, silva, yaya, hart, zabb along with the rest of our team won the FA CUP last season and took us into the champions league, not just king carlos tevez !!!

lets move on and not get like the bitter rags who slate carlos !!!!!!! lets say thanks and move on to our next city hero, although we are upset no real blue could slate tevez for the job he did on the pitch ! its just a pity kia is his agent and the need for him too move clubs every 18-14 months.

If we can land Nasri this week and bring in Augero as well then the loss of Tevez would be disappointing however nothing more.

Consider the fact we paid £25M and have paid him an aggregate £15M for 2 years wages so far. If we get £40M or better then he has cost us nothing and gave us plenty not only in Premier League prize money but also the FA Cup win. Couple this together with shirt sales and other merchandise and you can safely say that we have made on the deal.

What we cannot let happen is him to linger on like (Ade, Bellamy, Santa Crutch) others drawing good money whilst the transfer value disappears. If Tevez stayed the remaining 3 years of his deal the he would walk away and we would have paid him in wages around £45M and the transfer fee of £25M. The net cost to City would be a minimum £70M. Yes this could be offset with another 3 years of shirts sales however it could be he would do a no show and not put in the effort or commitment we are used to.

These figures show it's time for Tevez to go, with our blessing I may add, and City for once to financially make on a deal.

Despite everything, there is a very good chance he will still be with us at the start of the season. The new financial fair play rules might see to it that the most any other club (outside England) would be willing to pay him would be nearer 100 to 120k a week, meaning he would have to take a huge pay cut. How much does he want to be nearer his children?

As for the fee, in light of the Torres, Kaka, Ronaldo deals, £50 million doesn't seem unreasonable, especially when you consider that the likes of Sanchez (unproven) will cost over £30 million. However, I would have thought that we would accept nearer £35 million, if we have a suitable replacement.

As for a suitable replacement, I'm not sure there is one available. Aguero? Maybe but I thought he wanted to stay in Spain? Benzema or Higuain? No. Tevez is in the top 10 strikers in the world and how many of them are available? Exactly.

So we may still have him here next season. The most likely destination, if he goes, is Real Madrid or Inter in a deal with Sneijder, if he's available but then we come back to the wages problem with Inter so it only really leaves Madrid. If he stays, will he be any good? Who knows? He certainly began to wane in the second half of last season and could be disruptive. There is an argument that we are a better team without him but he still has the capability to change a game in an instant.

Has anybody got any other suggestions at to who could replace him up front and who would be available?

How I hate the close season. Not because there is no football--It comes as a huge relief when there's wall to wall football for 10 months of the year--but because of all the endless speculation required to fill up the newspapers and cyberspace. Will he go, won't he go, will be he part of a swap deal. There's this player to think of, or there again that player to consider. God, this is all so boring.

Meanwhile City quietly go about their business, Clichy bought, Savic almost in the bag. If Tevez goes it won't be the end of the world. It will be a good thing. The players towards the end of last season began to gel as a team of ten men and Tevez. Without him others will step up to the plate and do the business.

Firstly, comments to that great footballer Carlos Tevez. Carlos, thanks for the goals and all that hard running. But stick your ridiculous smokescreen reasons for wishing to leave up your and your agent's backside - IT DON'T WASH!

Additionally. making Tevez captain was an absolutely ridiculous decision (nodoubt pandering to the player) EVERYONE knows that VINNY captained City to the FA Cup and has carried Tevez in the captain role. Give Vinny the armband immediately.

If he goes will Tevez be missed? On the field "yes" of course, he's top class. But he will be missed only for a small amount of time. Replacement(s) will follow as the Blue Juggernaut slips into third gear.

Manchester City will long live on without Tevez or any player, especially such a selfish money motivated person as Tevez.

Secondly, to rag comment ..................

Perhaps you might reflect on some money grabbing people (and some with rather lax morals too) that are associated with your club.

Let this be a learning curve for all future buys....

Tevez is a one off and there will not be many players of is skill, nature and personallity, who will come from the ghetto of argentina again!, remember this guy was born in poverty with owt a pot to p*ss in.
something most of us cant relate too, hez a nomad who travels the world to earn as much money as possible for him and is family.
think off where hez come from then you might start to understand the mans behavier..

We should thank the football gods that he graced the blue shirt, because there is no doubt we wouldt be where we are now.

CITY LEGEND.... TEVEZ 10

We need to accept that no one is going to offer 50 million in cash - its not gonna happen, a swap is indeed the only way this is gonna go...........Id accept -

Eto'o plus 10 million

Lavezzi plus 10 million

and straight swaps for Sanchez, Rossi, Benzema, Aguerro, Cavani, Villa and Hulk............

Tevez has screwed us with his un-neccisarily public statement, all buying clubs know we have a player itching to leave and this puts them in a position to offer less and that annoys me to be honest. With a litle respect he could have put in his request behind closed doors - why shout it from the roof tops in such a melodramatic fashion. For me thats showing no consideration for his club - despite all the rhetoric.........

After yesterday I am going to make this post politically correct in that Tevez does deserve all he gets in that he brought it upon himself to sign a 5 year deal, play away from his family ties and mess his family about. After months of trying to reconcile with his wife he has been no doubt given an ultimatum in that he leaves England and plays for a team in a country she wishes to live in they can get back together. This is not Tevez's fault and to be honest it's a sacrifice he's willing to make in that he wants to be with his children after no doubt realizing what a fool and a huge mistake he has made. I know a contract is a contract and unless he goes to a club outside of England can his needs be met without being bad mouthed for money grabbing. If he goes to Chelsea which is highly unlikely then this must be his motive if he goes to Spain or Italy maybe there is some truth in what he as a person not a footballer wants. I am not sticking up for him and frankly feel he doesn't deserve it but with respect to Tevez it's not him I am thinking about, it's his children a point everyone seems to have missed.

I can understand the fact he's loaded and he could travel to see them when ever he wants too but again this will affect our club, to play like he does and travel all the way back to Argentina is a huge ask for anyone. Maybe we as a club will be better off without him because on the field he's greedy and totally self ambitious and doesn't assist our other strikers in goals which without him can see our other strikers blossoming. Yesterday I was slated for being sexist, for starting my post being a woman which when i look at again really wasn't a sexist comment but a mere truth in that I am a woman and I do fully understand. I did not speak of any other person/s lack of understanding to his situation and their own opinions to this whole Tevez affair.

In light of all that is happening I truly hope a very good outcome for all concerned with our club, Tevez and more so his Children they are the important factor in all this and with Manchester City holding all the cards a deal that suits the club will only be met by a few clubs so City will win no matter what. I can sympathize with men and women in Afghanistan and other places in the world away from their families and still see Tevez as stupid, but at the end of the day he is only human and many have made the same mistake and many will continue to do so.

Hardly came as a suprise to any City fans,we knew or expected this after Tevez,s carry on in january,if it is to do with his family then so be it.

What bombshell? A bombshell would suggest its a complete surprise but I dont think any City fans are surprised that Tevez and his agent are looking to engineer another lucrative move.

What is more important here is the stand the club are continuing to take on this issue and i trust they will remain as steadfast in putting Tevez and his agent in their deluded places.

wheres the bombshell ? carlos has never been loyal, it was always on the the cards, off you go good luck thanks for your great effort, oh by the way your going nowhere, unless some one pays fifty million. the real mark jones.

Inter refused an outrigth swap but somehow you think you should have Eto Sneijder and 10m for Tevez, plus you think Tevez is the best striker in the world? Eto hits 20+ league goals every season while Tevez has done it just once. Tevez will never get τ̅☺ Etos heights.

Absolutely agree, bombshell, what bombshell??

Could see this coming a country mile off, last December's rumblings were fair warning, he's running to form, simple as that, and his agent is somewhere in all this. I also re-state my feelings of yesterday that City will have anticipated this, and I strongly believe will have specific contingency planning in place, the Club is run far too professionally now for that not to be the case. I also now believe that the Club, and Mancini in particular actually want rid, and despite opinions to the contrary will want it done rapido, they need to get his influence out of the place, get the media attention about him gone, and get everyone firmly focused on the future, and post-Tevez

I cannot see anyway that he will go in a straight cash deal, and I realy do anticipate this being a swap and cash adjustment transaction as and when anything happens, City are firmly in the box seat with this one, no question. My only concern is, given his age (27), and his track record, who are going to take the risk that he signs on for 4-5 years, and then wants to leave his next destination after another 2 years? Given this latest performance, along with his collection of ever-changing lame excuses, surely other Clubs are going to be very wary of getting involved with him and the agent from hell ??

boring.....there are now several threads on the same thing.
any chance of a few stories on the role models within united's ranks ? no, thought not.

This could turn out to be a very good scenario. There are some amazing players out there. We could do a straight swap or a swap plus cashback. Sjneider, Aguero, Villa, Higuain. Any of those would be welcome!

Tevez is probably at the only club in world football who could let his contract run down and take the loss. But saying that who wants an unhappy player at a club and the sooner he now goes the better.
On the day that a MAN who ran through brick walls for his team is laid to rest , it just does not wash when a highly paid player cant see out the three years left on his contract because of the weather and lack of nice restaraunts. And as for missing your family let me put this to you. Men all over the country work away in other countries in order to pay the bills and at best pay off their mortgages early. And they do not have private jets laid on for them

Your a great player Carlos but either extremely childish or worse very very greedy.
