No excuses, sought or given. Roberto Mancini has not sought to fudge the issue, not looked for refuge in ifs and buts, not lamely pointed to City’s 34-year recent history of flops and false dawns.
There can be no backward-looking, no mention of inherent structural faults in the club, no dark whispers of gypsy curses or FA conspiracies.
Now is the time for City to deliver.
And, truth be told, the target being set for Mancini and his millionaires is only a fractional improvement on last season’s near-miss.
Three points more would have taken the Blues to the Promised Land of the Champions League. Only a late United goal denied them a place in a major domestic cup final for the first time in 29 years.
And only a series of unfortunate events disrupted the flow, depriving City of key players at important times.
On such small advances are dynasties built. City aim to finish this season at least one place higher than last time, and preferably with a trophy in the cabinet.
Mancini has been planning against mishaps for the coming season, knowing that even the unpredictable - such as Carlos Tevez’s domestic traumas, or Emmanuel Adebayor’s brutal brush with terrorists - cannot be held up as reasons for failure.
He has taken out insurance against the trials and tribulations of a Premier League season. And what a policy he has taken out.
Quality
Seventy six million pounds on David Silva, Yaya Toure, Aleksandar Kolarov and Jerome Boateng.
Another £50million pending on James Milner and Mario Balotelli. The quality of the squad has ratcheted up a notch or two, not least in midfield, where the Blues looked too one-paced and static at times last season.
They had pace out wide through Craig Bellamy, Shaun Wright-Phillips and Adam Johnson.
But with Stevie Ireland off colour, there was no inspiration, no creation and no spark in central areas at important moments. With the purchases of Yaya and Silva, that midfield weakness has transformed into quite a strength, providing the two men make a smooth transition from La Liga to Premier League.
The other glaring weaknesses from last season were in the full back positions, and Mancini has emphatically addressed that issue as well.
Boateng prefers to play as centre back, but it is beginning to look as though he will start the season at right back.
He looked top-quality in that position for Germany as they won the World Cup third place play-off against Uruguay, and he reprised that powerful display in the friendly match with Valencia on Saturday night.
The squad also looks more balanced, and has no problems fulfilling the Premier League quota of eight home-grown players in a 25-man squad.
Meeting the Europa League rules on a 25-man squad are a little tighter, as Uefa insists that four of the eight “home-grown” players are actually produced by the club rather than simply by any clubs within the English or Welsh associations.
History
It might mean they have to register a younger player, such as Dedryck Boyata, to meet the quota, or even submit a 24-man squad list.
But Mancini appears to have achieved his aim of having two high-quality players for every position.
In fact, the Blues now have at least two internationals vying for every place.
That has never happened before in their history, but the Blues are intent on turning the page on a whole new era in that history.
The page-turning begins on Saturday, 12.45, at White Hart Lane.

I still say if Mancini had been with us from the start of the season, we'd have probably got 3rd place but that on my part is maybe a little speculative. I can see how our club is shaping and Mancini is a huge part of that, Our owners will not sack him because they know it takes time and O.k time is money to them but man have they got loads of the stuff. Within 10 years is when these guys will be getting their good return, if all goes to plan and not after 2 seasons. I think this season many will be saying same old City but I doubt that will be the case as we are going to see a great season ahead of us and possibly do better than what anyone expects us to.
Secondly why would it be deemed a failure if say next season they went on to win the treble say.. just because they may not this season doesn't mean anything. I think this squad of players are well equipped and more than capable of winning the title this season. The team will take time and I can see them really starting to peak mid November which if they are in amongst the top group can really believe and push for it. I get the fact we have to tidy up at the back especially on preseasons form but I truly do not think we have to worry about it too much as we'll see a much better display week in week out. All the top clubs have spent, we have just we have done it in a very short space of time and well spent too in some cases. Good luck to you guys and I hope you all play the season of your life.

I would love us to finish higher but think we will finish 3rd. I want the Spuds to again finish in the top 4 as this will, in my opinion signal the end of the dippers as a force in English football.

We City fans are a lot more reserved and patient than our Trafford counter-parts, he is not under pressure to deliver this season at all anything other than good football, and a sign that things are turning for this club into a brighter future......a trophy this soon into his reign will be a bonus.
We have 4 new players, a new coaching staff, new style and 4 players who brilliant though they are, all fresh to England and the Premiership, it will take some longer than others to settle, we also have for this season "Mancini's ideas and plans", last season, I don't think he trusted the people he was asking to carry out the tasks he was giving them, so just persisted with the methods that Hughes was using, and hoped his superior coaching of them to become organised would be the difference between CL and no CL.
This season is really the start of the Mancini reign, Joe Mercer once said it takes a great manager 3 years to build a team capable of winning success, Mancini has had 6 months and now you think he MUST deliver........do me a favour, as long as by May 2012 Manchester City have won a trophy then he would have delivered on the basis that a manage should be given 3 years......I personally think we will get a trophy before then, but for me the Don is not under any pressure to win silverware this season or win 38 games 4-0.
I also don't expect anything other than a defeat this weekend, and a total of 4 points from the 1st 3 games.......IMHO anything more than that would be a bonus and for the season....top 4 means we have improved.

On a different note, does anyone else think this 25 man squad issue is massively overstated. I can't see Mancini struggling at all. Plus we have enough homegrown to be fine.
Also, Bellamy will easily fit into the squad.
It seems a lot of worrying over nothing.

As the squad stands (and assuming Milner and Balotelli join) we would have the following:
Homegrown over-21s:
Shay Given
Joe Hart
Stuart Taylor
Micah Richards
Wayne Bridge
Joleon Lescott
Shaun Wright-Phillips
Adam Johnson
Gareth Barry
Craig Bellamy
Milner *
Foreign over-21s:
Pablo Zabaleta
Jerome Boateng
Kolo Toure
Aleksandar Kolarov
Vincent Kompany
Nigel de Jong
Yaya Toure
Patrick Vieira
David Silva
Emmanuel Adebayor
Carlos Tevez
Under-21s:
Javan Vidal
Vladimir Weiss
Dedryck Boyata
Greg Cunningham
Adi Ibrahim
Alex Nimely
Balotelli *
That makes only 22 players aged over 21. In addition we have:
Michael Johnson
Nedum Onuoha
Kelvin Etuhu
Felipe Caicedo
Shaleum Logan
Onuha would benefit from a season on loan to get a full season under his belt. M Johnson will not be training until September and would then benefit from a loan and regular football to get him match fit. KE, FC & SL will either be sold or go on loan.
That leaves 3 spaces for the following 4 players
Stephen Ireland
Roque Santa Cruz
Robinho
Jo
I hope Robinho will be part of the 25. I watched him captain (Yes, captain) Brazil last night playing as the playmaker in midfield rather than out wide and he ran the show. By the way, Neymar also looked good up front.
Which still leaves places for RSC and either SI or Jo. - I still hope SI will stay, but he needs to fight for his place in the team.
Don't forget, even if M Johnson does not go on loan when fit he is still eligible for cup / European games so will still have opportunities to prove he can become the player we all thought before injuries.
If we are considering letting Weiss (who doesn't count in the 25) go out on loan then we must be keeping SWP and hopefully Bellamy.

I am of the understanding that most good football managers don't spend their days 'talking' to their players. (from what most Rags I know say the players 'talk' to whoever happens to be old bacon face's assistant) Bellers admitted as much when he said that neither Hughes or O'Neill did much talking to him. The telling line was about how ruthless the club has become, sadly still harking back to Hughes' sacking. Time to move on and commit Craig, or time to move on to Fulham if that is what you want. Afterall Bellers was quick to point out when he arrived it wasn't about money but that he acknowledged that this was possibly his last big chance to achieve something.

Off topic a bit but I think it's ridiculous that the club are allowing Wayne Bridge to co-host the one show with Gabby Logan at the moment, only days before the season starts.

In an ideal world EPL squad would be = Hart, Given, Taylor, Zabaleta, Boateng, Richards, Kompany, Kolo, Lescott, Kolarov, Bridge, SWP, A Johnson, Vieira, Barry, de Jong, Yaya, Milner, Silva, M Johnson, Tevez, Adebayor, Bellamy, Robinho, Jo = 25 players (12 Home grown) + many others born on or after 1 Jan 1989.
Euro Lge squad = Hart, Given, Boateng, Richards, Kolarov, Cunningham, Kompany, Boyata, Kolo, Zabaleta, SWP, AJ, Weiss, Silva, Yaya, de Jong, Barry, Milner, M Johnson, Tevez, Adebayor, Bellamy, Robinho, Nimely, Balotelli = 25 players (13 Homegrown & 7 Club grown)
Both look good enough to me.

The real pressure to deliver a trophy this season though rests on the shoulders of Chelsea and United! Can Chelsea defend the title, or are they going to slump it as United did last year? And can the ex-champions hack it this time, or are their financial problems and ageing squad to big a problem for Sir Alex to deliver? Will he be the next managerial victim after the MON resignation?

They'd still keep it with another year added. They would prefer to live in complete denial if any silverware came City's way. Any trophy City won would be branded as 'Micky Mouse', and the media would also weigh in with an assertion that the season was a substandard and unpredictable one. But if the banner is to remain, why not change it to something like £1.1bn debt, and they can keep on adding a few digits with each passing year.
