Craig Bellamy: I could quit football if I don't make City squad

Craig Bellamy, pictured on Manchester City's recent US tour, said he may quit football if he is ditched by the club

Craig Bellamy has not ruled out walking away from football if he is ditched by Manchester City.

The Wales captain faces an uncertain future at Eastlands and is by no means certain to be named in manager Roberto Mancini's squad.

Bellamy, who is set to line up for Wales in tomorrow night's friendly against Luxembourg in Llanelli, revealed he has rejected an offer from German club Wolfsburg, who are managed by former England boss Steve McLaren.

But he is also prepared to fight tooth and nail to be part of Mancini's squad, even though the signs do not look good.

Bellamy is set to win his 59th international cap tomorrow in Wales' final game before starting their Euro 2012 qualifying campaign against Montenegro early next month.

And he is chomping at the bit to make an impression.

"I feel strongly that I can offer something at the club," the 31-year-old said. "But if I don't get in the 25-man squad, I don't know what I will do.

"I might finish, full stop, or look at every option I get.

"This game is as ruthless as any. I sort of feel I am not going to be part of it (at Manchester City). I can see it from a distance.

"I find that very difficult to take because I really enjoy playing for Manchester City. I think I have shown that with my commitment this year.

"I've had a few options. I've turned down Wolfsburg. I don't fancy Germany, it's not somewhere I see myself playing football.

"I have to see what options I have. I am here to play football.

"With this 25-man ruling, it doesn't matter how well I train or how good my attitude is, I might not be registered to play.

"So do I go without playing football until January, or do I find myself a club where I can play football?

"I am committed to stay where I am. I feel I deserve to be part of it, but I don't pick the 25 or the team. I have to wait on their decision."

I would hate to see him go but if he can't produce, week in, weekout, then he either goes or retires. Let's put it this way, he's not short of a few pennies and he would pick up loads of commentator type work, so would never be out of work.
Good luck, in whatever you decide.

I love Bellers and he's in my 25 but boy can he moan!

He could start a new career as a motivational speaker ;-)
Seriously I think he still has a lot to offer. 100% commitment and a never say die attitude could be the glue that sticks the squad together.

would be sorry to see him leave AS A PLAYER.......but he certainly has the ability to unsettle the dressing room so its entirely down to Mancini.....if he's gonna register him then play him, if not then flirt him, as good as he has been for us, we now have players of his calibre to step in.

We just have to trust Bobby Manc

Keep the Blue faith. CTWD

Bellers says in the interview that Mancini hasn't spoken to him since Feb - if true, that seems woeful man management by the Italian?!?!? Bellers also says this is true for a number of other players, all sounds very od to me.... anyway, i'd have Bellers in my 25 every day as long as he wants to be here and is commited.

he's got to stay surely this is a no brainer. one of very few with searing pace which is where we have missed a trick a little so far along with a replacement / deputy ballplayer
as and when silva is injured/rested. I get the feeling he's had the vibe from Bobby that with his injuries he's gonna miss out which would be a real shame but i suppose we cannot afford to be sentimental any more.

On a sepearte note, Shay needs a reality check. Whats all that about ? Whats up with may the best man win on saturday and I will respect the decision and cheer the boys on from the dugout ? Just because either one of them doesnt get picked for game number one from a possible 60 odd? - A very badly timed comment and showing no bond with the club whatsoever which is in contrast to bellamy who is paying saying " Look I knew the score when I was signed and publicy stated that I knew better players would follow as I have been fully breifed on the clubs ambitious intentions but I am a fighter and I want to stay here and be part of what was promised and I have no problem being part of a squad as I understand no-one can play every game" Keep craig and tell Shay Birmingham want him on loan.

I really hope he stays and goes on to prove what an asset he is to the team.

Before he signed I always though he had an attitude problem and was a bit of an idiot, I could not have been more wrong.

He has proved himself repeatedly since he has been here and I hope he does it again, he may not be in the first team all the time but he is a great option to bring on when the oppositions legs are getting tired, If I was a defender I couldn't think of anything worse than a very quick, physical forward running at me and chasing every ball late in the game.

And if he does leave then I will wish him luck in the future both with his football and his off the field stuff in Africa. He will always be welcome back at City my me and I expect by the vast majority of City fans out there.

He also said this was the same with Hughes and he a had a good relationship with him...and says this sort of thing is normal. I am guessing when he says he hasn't spoken to him since feb he means in an offical more formal way, i.e. one to one meeting.

I wouldn't have him in my 25 because, as much as I love him as a player, his knees could go and all of a sudden we're a key player down until January. He'll get plenty of cup games just not Premier League, what's the problem with that?

Truth of the matter is, that *if* Bobby Manc hasn't spoken to him since Feb then he's on his way out.

I think that this whole statement (which for Bellamy was quite constrained and even a little emotional), shows how utterly useless Mancini is at man management. The fact he's had to come out and practically plead in public is an embarrassment to this great club and this great player. Where's the respect? We're not even talking about somebody who was average last season, he was brilliant. And without Tevez's goals he would have been the player of the season, no two ways about it.

We NEED players like this, who want to fight for the club, fight for their right to be in the team, not just discarded because they happen to upset a few people. We need players like this to push the new superstars of the team, to make sure they don't sit back on their laurels. Who else is going to gee up the team to role their sleeves up and graft harder - Toure? I think not.

Tevez said it last year when he said Bellamy was the best player in the team, and quite frankly he put our highly paid world class footballer (robinho) to shame.

I'm disgusted. Disgusted with Mancini, disgusted with the whole idea that we are willing to pay out big money for untested 'superstars' while leaving one of our superstars out in the cold.

A bad day for City.

With a comment like that, you really don't know what bellers is all about. Bellers would make my 25 man squad easy.

Unless we sign somebody who would replace him I really can't see how he would miss the cut looking at the players available on the website. He should be fine.

Seems like players are going down the 'if I scream and shout, I might get picked route'. Can only see a maximum of 2 more good years in Bellers, due to his current knee problems. He would be ideal for squad rotation as it gives him a chance to rest them. Don't like this attitude as a fan, as it is likely to cause unrest in the dressing room. But, can't say I would do it any differently if I was in his shoes.
The truth is we are at the level where a single good player is no longer the be all and end all at the club. If someone doesn't like what is happening then the next guy can step into their position.

Looks like he will be a 3rd rate bit part player. Digressing, that's how we seasoncard holders now feel. Having moved (Shifted) our seats from the south stand to the east stand level 3, we now find that this tier is being closed for the Europa game. We now have to find seats instead of having our normal ones 4 days after other season cards can obtain theirs . What is going on? I understand for the requirement to ensure there is a good atmosphere, but why have we not been allocated similar seats on the 2nd (middle tier) automatically. Why are we treated as 3rd class supporters. Get all of your act together Cooke.

@Rick

Where's the bit about not talking Mancini since Feb?

Report This Reply

I do not think he will be in the 25 man squad, but I feel he has done enough to warrant a place.

In the final matches of last year, when he went to take a corner and the crowd clapped him, he didn't acknowledge, why?

I do feel as though he is an ideal impact player and there is enough dead wood in the squad who should go well before Bellamy is considered surplus to requirements.

I doubt it if he will give up football, he will end up with Sparky if he does leave.

We have to trust Roberto.

We need to keep him at all costs, he is proven quality in the PL and his never say die attitude along with Tevez will bring the best out of the new players. Still not sure if Silva is going to cut the mustard in our league, looks lightweight to me so we need Bellars to show him how it's done and as a replacement if (we are talking about City here!) it all goes wrong.

With the season coming up and the games to be played I am sure he will play lots. We have to share the load now just like other clubs. Craig has admitted himself last season that to play constantly if an effort. It's about the star man taking the stage first now. We have to as a club build now for the future, We have to play the league, F.A Cup, League Cup, European League, Charity Shield ;-). He might as well hang on in there.

This is just strange now. How can he not make the 25; the man who fought against the 32 million Robinho and won his place ? He's not going to be a major player but will be a killer impact sub with his pace and experience. He's not moaning like Given or Hart about wanting to be first choice and I feel that he has worked enough for this club on the pitch to deserve a little bit of respect. Surely someone can take 10 minutes out of their day to reassure him about his future?

This lacks a bit of class and loyalty really

Bellamy and Mancini do not get on, but for me its evident Bellamy wants to stay at CITY. Just because Bellamy and Mancini don't get on, it does not mean they can't work professionally together! Bellamy seems to be prepared to get on with it, and i hope Mancini is too! It would be a really big loss to lose Bellamy, even with the likes of Tevez, Johnson, Silva and Adebayor as attacking options! Bellamy would be in my match day squad at least, every time he was fit and available, never mind the 25! I think he should still be getting in the starting 11 regular as well this coming season (obviously if he is playing well) and he would be in my starting 11 against Tottenham, but i can't see that happening with him not even making the squad against Valencia!

Really hope he stays and has another very good season individually and helps the team have a successful season most importantly!

Totally agree 100% - despicable behaviour doesn't even begin to describe it, but the biggest problem is this stupid 25 man squad rule!!!

I think he will make the cut. Mancini not talking to him probably means in the official sense. I think Bellamy is one player that I would stick my neck out for. I know he has a lot to say and can be moody, but that's just his nature. He's a grafter with a very serious no nonsense attitude and I think his game would be even better around some of these new signings. I just dont get a feel from SWP, he seems to think it's all a big joke, just not professional enough for me. Stephen Ireland with his pimped up Bentley and 50 grand fish tank says it all for me. We want serious professionals now, not Chav's.
Things have certainly changed at City and we have to back the decision of the manager, he knows what he's doing and I dont believe for one minute that Cook or Marwood decide who will be in the 25.
I trust the boss will do what is right for the team.. With Citys money, the team will come first and then they will sell the surplus players or send them out on loan. Good look Bellamy.

He's a passionate player and doesn't suffer slackers on the pitch. What's wrong with that ? He was a pivitol player last season, scoring some of our most vital goals. He's a work horse and often drives the team.

I hope he stays, because he's still alot to offer. But he must accept he's not going to start every week and so have many others in the squad.

Some of you have got seriously short memories. This Lad will give his all, which is still considerable, for the Blue Shirt. As far as causing trouble in the dressing room, he pulled Robinho up for coasting, when no-one else would, and he was the 1st to show solidarity with team-mate Bridge when publicly ripping into Terry on live TV. He'd be one of the 1st names on any team sheet in the Prem. I asked him in the tunnel before the Lisbon Friendly in NY if he was leaving, he laughed and said not as long as City needed him. I think we do.
