In the summer of 2004, Kevin Keegan lost out to Hamburg for the signature of central defender Daniel Van Buyten because City could not afford the £2.5m fee.
Six years on, the Blues can claim to have spent more money on players in the Premier League era than any other club bar Chelsea.
Even neighbours United now lag behind City on the spending front when it comes to totting up all the cash laid out on players since 1992.
While the Reds have forked out just short of £420m in transfer fees since the formation of the Premier League, City’s outlay during the same period is one major signing away from breaking the £500m barrier.
Here, Mike Whalley lists City's buys since the start of the Premier League.

Glauber Berti (Nuremburg, free) LEGEND !
My god there's some crap on that list!!!!
didnt corradi cost us 2 millions?
The figure would make more sense if compared with the sum recouped from sales of players.
Also, the figure spent by City only surpasses United's spending due to very recent outlay. In real terms, United have surely spent considerably more over this period than City have.
20 Marlboro Lights cost just under £3 in 1992 - they now cost almost £6.50.
Can you see what economic factor I'm suggesting you factor in to your assertion that we're the Premiership's all time biggest spenders?
Some really bad buys there, but did we really pay that much for Danny Mills (free)
Anyone noticed how Sky have this season seemingly decided to attack us?
they are now working out the percentage profit that the selling club made when we buy a player off them for some reason. they dont seem to do it with anyone else.
Also, in light of Mancini's "other teams are scared" comments, they had a poll of a couple of managers and, of all people, one of the Nevilles on just how "scared" the rest of football actually is.
I noticed it last season also when they had a new post match attack dog to have a go at Mancini.
400K for The Goat..........one of our best buys
I think the signing that were best value for money for You Lot, were, Petrov, Elano and Corluka. I don't see how; Boetang, Silva and Yaya Toure will offer that much more than they could of, especially £60 millon times more.
snide
Not too many of these represent good value for money based on the transfer markets at the time and their contribution to the cause
My good value list (excluding this transfer window):-
Kompany
Adam Johnson
Joe Hart
P Schmeichel
Benarbia
Berkovic
Pearce
Dunne
Morrison
Goater
Weaver
Dickov (Wembley goal repaid his fee on its own)
Walsh
Rosler.
Some left off list weren't necessarily bad signings, but I feel we paid more than we needed to for them.
there is a certain Keith Curle missing off this list.
Where's Dan the man Tiatto?
Phil Neal- go to http://www.transferleague.co.uk/
the figures are all on there cheers
Who cares...
How much do film makers spend on each film?? 30plus million....
It's supply and demand,it's the nature of the entertainment industry
I thought Bosvelt was a free? I remember KK saying at the time he nearly wet himself when he knew he could get him for free?
Chirst there's some dross on there... Alan Kernaghan (Mboro, £1.6m) , Gerry Creaney (P’mouth, £1.5m) and Matias Vuoso (Independiente, £3.5m) are particular favourites!
Looking at out Free's we would have had a hell of a team if we had them in their prime, Peter Schmeichel, Ali B, Tarnat, Andy Cole, Stuart Pearce, George Weah !
Who is the best value for money signing?
The Gaot £400,000?
Carlo Nash £100,000?
Nicky Weaver £200,000?
On a personal note, one of my favourite players was Kakhaber Tskhadadze or Peepo, and I was genuinely gutted when he got his injury.
there is a certain Keith Curle missing off this list.
Keith Curle signed before the Premier league started, hence not being on the list.
I refused to believe until this list came out just how pro rag and anti City the muen is!!!
Where is the rag comparison? Where does it show how much more than anyone else they were spending when we were skint?
And another point, Tony Vaughn, we actually paid over a mill for the worst player to ever wear the shirt!!!
And one more, Keegan was a terrible judge of player.
For a start, the glaring fact about that is that City have not been in the Premier League for all them seasons, for 5 of the seasons we were either in the Championship or League 1 for a single season.............typical really of the calibre of this paper, that the Editor who must be a rag, chose to run with this drivvel, and even had the audacity to claim that we have spent nearly £500m in the Premier League in doing so, which is complete rubbish.
GET THE FACTS RIGHT RAG FANZINE for crying out loud, I am sick of keeping correct your glaring errors, either that or hire me as the City reporter, I have never done any journalism work in my life, but that shouldn't matter, as by the standards of your writers and Editor, neither have they.
1995/96 - City were relegated under the useless Alan Ball
1996/97 - Spent all season in the now Championship (then First Division)
1997/98 - Relegated to League 1 for the first time in the clubs history they slipped into the 3rd tier of English football
1998/99 - Won the Playoff Final vs Gillingham to clinch Promotion to the Championship at that time.
1999/00 - Won Promotion ending 2nd in the Championship, following a great day at Blackburn
2000/01 - Relegated with Joe Royle at the helm, he was sacked not long after
2001/02 - Kevin Keegan blazed a trail in the club, scoring 108 goals, conceeding 52 and amassing 99 points we cruised to the Championship Title to clinch promotion back to the Premier League which is where we have stayed ever since.
So please re-do this pathetic article to dig at City and remove them following years from your accounts, then calculate again and can we also please have the same spending and purchases regarding United on their side of this paper please........or are you not allowed to initiate a bad word about them, or Fergie will ban you?.
Sun Jihai £4m....we were ripped off there !! Just proves we did get some bargains, The Goat, Kinki, Berkovic, Berbarbia to go along with the flops, Jo, Bianchi, RSC.
Same applies to most team though especially the Rags !
Still reckon we let Corluka and Elano go without replacing them with players of same quality (sorry Zab and Barry).
slow-news day journalism and, as the cat rightly says, nothing to factor in the value of time on money nor return on players. don't remember you guys running a similar list throughout United's reign as top spenders.
in the interests of impartialilty, can we have a list of their spending? here's a starter of names for you:
Veron
Hargreaves
Taibi
Forlan
Djemba-Djemba
Kleberson
Berbaflop
Ferdinand
So what they are saying is that even though we have been by far the biggest spenders in the last 2-3 years... we have only now surpassed united spending! LOL
Apart from the fact that transfer fees have increased dramatically over the last 18 years, caused in the main by the club from Trafford inflating the market since football began in 1992, until two bigger boys appeared on the scene, what is the point of this article beyond having another dig at City?
We have paid out for some awful, AWFUL players lol
We bought some rubbish didn't we -
But some gems in there. Ali Benarbia for free! Could you imagine him or Kinky in this squad? Minded by Ya Ya and linking up with Tevez. Be like that 2001/2 season all over again.
