Yaya Toure made an impressive debut as Manchester City beat Club America on penalties at the Georgia Dome.
Emmanuel Adebayor netted a first-half penalty after Aquivaldo Mosquera brought down Adam Johnson, but Enrique Esqueda wriggled past an uncertain Joleon Lescott to equalise two minutes after the break.
City's display in the International Soccer Challenge was much more coherent, as they stepped up their game following defeats against Sporting Lisbon and New York Red Bulls on their United States tour.
The match was most notable for a fine 45-minute performance from midfield signing Toure and the return to action of half-time substitute Shay Given, who saved two penalties in the shoot-out as City triumphed.
Toure, brought in for £24million from Barcelona, patrolled the midfield very effectively alongside Gareth Barry as City dominated possession in the first half.
Despite that, Club America had the best chance of the opening half-hour, as Daniel Montenegro’s 25-yard drive hit the post with Joe Hart beaten.
Adebayor’s spot-kick nine minutes before half-time gave City the lead they deserved on the balance of play.
Mancini’s decision to make seven changes at the break did disrupt his side’s rhythm, and Lescott was lucky not to concede a penalty with 60 seconds of the restart as he appeared to haul down Matias Vuoso.
It was the most significant moment of the night for Vuoso, the man who notoriously never made a first-team appearance for the Blues after Kevin Keegan paid Independiente £3.5m for him eight years ago.
But while Vuoso was unfortunate to be denied a spot-kick, Club America did draw level from their next attack as Esqueda coolly slotted the ball past Given.
Pablo Zabaleta impressed in a holding midfield role as America began to look increasingly dangerous.
But it was City who had the best chances to win the game in 90 minutes, as keeper Guillermo Ochoa recovered well to deny Jo after spilling Vladimir Weiss’s shot, and then Adebayor hit the underside of the bar in the closing moments.
Given, making his first appearance for City since dislocating his shoulder against Arsenal in April, pressed his claims for a starting place by saving from Mosquera and Montenegro in the penalty shoot-out.
The Blues scored all four of their penalties to win the game, thanks to Adebayor, Jo, Weiss and Patrick Vieira.
Mancini was pleased to see some of his World Cup men – Toure, Barry, Weiss and Shaun Wright-Phillips – get their first match action of the tour, which concludes against Inter Milan in Baltimore in the early hours of Sunday, UK time.
CITY: Hart (Given 46), Richards (Cunningham 81), Toure Kolo (Lescott 46), Boyata, Bridge, Kompany (Zabaleta 46), Toure Yaya (Ireland 46), Barry (Vieira 46), Wright-Phillips (Weiss 46), A. Johnson (Jo 46), Adebayor.
What is your verdict on the action? Have your say.

I'm glad you apologised as I really can't agree with that pal.
The best goalkeepers in the Prem are the ones who save their teams points at crucial times. Whilst I would've agreed with you before last season, I firmly belive that Joe Hart would now save us as many points in a season as Shay does in a full season (look at how many points he won almost single handedly for Birminghm last year). Bearing this in mind & the age difference between the 2 of them, it's a no brainer for me. Give Joe Hart game time & within a couple of seasons he will be considered a much better keeper than Shay EVER was.
Potentially Joe Hart could become one of our greatest ever keepers.

Ryan Giggs > Manchester City (29/07/2010 at 10:07)
I liked the way they decided to have a penalty shootout so City and pretend they won a game.
Mancini needs to spend another few hundred billion to get this team right.

thought we played very well first half, we were fluid with with some very good possession and passing. jo might finish like a glass of Blue Nun but i though he had a decent, lively game - infact no-one played badly - all pre-season issues considerd.
secong half the team was basically our second string and we looked out of it for the first 15 mins of the second half. after that i thought the lads put in decent shift against a very fit and quiye skillful mexican team............
p.s. that was still minus tevez, de-jong, silva, boateng and kolarov. plus im sure we'll add balotelli to that list as well.
p.p.s - thought yaya settled straight in and looked absolutly brilliant. great range of passing, fantastic presence and really dominated midfield.............

all the media seem to think a steady stream from the rags youth set up holds the club in good stead for the future, who were the last ones to come through ?.
sorry about slagging the rags off but I do enjoy it.

It's pretty obvious you have never been a goalkeeper. He might be better in time but I am not convinced.
