The winger, 20, is determined to make it at City – but is aware he may need a temporary move elsewhere to gain more first-team experience.
Sampdoria are taking an interest in Weiss, who spent the second half of last term on loan at Bolton, whose boss Owen Coyle used him mainly as a substitute.
The youngster played in three of Slovakia’s four matches at the World Cup in South Africa, and is looking to build on that experience.
His only competitive start for City so far came in last season’s FA Cup third-round tie at Middlesbrough.
Mancini is a keen admirer of Weiss, and wants to ensure that he does not spend the season kicking his heels on the sidelines.
Weiss said: “I’ve got three years left on my contract. I’m going to try to stay at City if possible.
“But I need to have a chat with the manager and see how pre-season goes.
“I don’t really know what’s going to happen at the moment. I’ve not spoken to the manager yet – I’ve only just got back to training. We will see what happens.”
One factor in Weiss’ favour is that he offers Mancini extra flexibility under new Premier League squad rules to be introduced this coming season.
The rules allow clubs a maximum of 25 players over the age of 21, of which at least eight must be homegrown.
Weiss would not be included in that 25-man quota this season, as he will not turn 21 until November.
And after that, he would be classed as a homegrown player anyway, having spent three years with an English club before reaching that age of 21.
The scheme applies only to the Premier League, not the FA or Carling Cups, while the Europa League has its own restrictions.
Weiss joined up with City’s tour party in the United States earlier in the week following his World Cup adventures with Slovakia.
Even though competition for places is only set to increase as Mancini puts together a squad capable of pushing for the Premier League title, Weiss is excited at the challenge that lies ahead.
“It’s great,” Weiss said. “I’ve just got back from the World Cup and I want to play regularly now.
“We’ll see how the pre-season goes and then we’ll take it from there.”

If we cannot get a midfielder with an eye for a pass and creative ability such has an Ozil, Hamsik, Diego, Sneijder, Kaka etc type to play in the middle for us, alongside a Yaya or with both Yaya and De Jong, then it would be madness to let him leave even on loan.
Without the additional midfielder as above:
Johnson Silva Weiss
de Jong & Yaya
With the additional creative spark:
Silva Creative spark Johnson/SWP
Yaya or Yaya & de Jong
