Capello defiant over Johnson call

Adam Johnson

England boss Fabio Capello denied he had made a mistake in leaving Manchester City starlet Adam Johnson out of his World Cup squad.

Capello's side were dumped out of the competiton after losing 4-1 to Germany, but Capello has stated he would like to carry on as manager if the FA allow him to.

He said: "When I chose the players I had been following the players for a very long time and I decided on the best players who finished the season.

"If they are fresher I don't know. Adam Johnson played a lot of games."

I honestly believe Johnson would have done been a better choice than some of the chosen England players who played yesterday.... In fact, I couldn't believe how Ozil outpaced Barry!!! Was brewing-up at the time??!!

glad AJ wasnt there to be tainted by what can only be described as a shambles........i must have see that Nike advert with rooney in it (knighted,table tennis with federer etc) about 17 thousand times in the last 3 weeks. and what did his contribution boil down to when all is said and done??? one deflected shot onto the post, some petulant mouthing off at the camera and the usual chav like behaviour with endless swearing, spitting etc..............im sure nike are really pleased with that.

capello got it wrong lennon and wright phillips are like for like players. johnson gives the team something different .for one he can cross the ball.! as for being tired what a joke .shrek looked almost comatosed.!

Just about sums up Capello doesent it?, clueless.
Get Venables in, Retire the numptys such as Lampard, gerrard and Terry and start again with Young players with technical ability and pace.
One thing which has been put to bed once and for all is this Myth about Wayne Rooney being "world class" - he is a joke, he hasnt played well for England since Euro 2004 when he burst onto the scene, it seems his move to Utd moved him to Billy big b***ocks status and he has never been the same since then. I am not even sure if he cares, maybe he is another one that should be jettisoned.

Adam Johnson played too many games and thats why Cappello did not pick him.

So in that case Shrek has chosen because the rags rested him.

just heard a pundit ask wether or not ozil could make it in the prem..........he seemed to do ok against a few of its representatives last night................

ozil or better still david silva for one wing and AJ on the other, now that would be class - plus they could interchange.............

p.s. everyone seems to suddenly be condeming james milner. yes 25 million would be 7-8 million too much but so what. he is a very effective and versatile premiership player and would be a very good addition. he is young and fits with the new stupid homegrown rule so i hope we get him. frank lampard is crap for england cause england are a crap team but he is an invaluable premiership player - we need to remember the difference. think robinho in reverse, is looking the biz on the world stage for a 4 week showpiece but is not made for the prem. only a few players can do both. carlos tevez for instance............we need to remember consistent premiership form not world cup sparkle, so for me thats a yes for milner.

I was sad for AJ at the time but pleased for SWP. Mind you after the last couple of weeks he could have taken the under 21s and not done any worst!!

Bring in the young players I say ! Get Stuart Pearce in as manager!.....Hang on.....didn't they lose 4-0 to Germany in the European Under 21 final last year ? Any chance of getting Carlos Tevez naturalised for the next European Championship ?

I've never understood the nation's obsession with Venables. What's he ever won? Couldn't beat switzerland and spain and struggled against Scotland in Euro 96. Evereyone's glasses were tinted by the Holland result.

Mr C Chorlton - 1) what are you doing on the City page, and 2) what part of Dukinfield Blue's post was inaccurate? Rooney was arguably the worst player at the world cup, a fat pub player whose appalling displays were worsted only by those of Glen Johnson. As for him being responsible for getting us to the world cup, don't make me laugh. I could have played up front against Kazakhstan, Belarus and Andorra and we'd have still qualified. When he came up against decent opposition, he was exposed as the overhyped flat track bully, those more discerning than your average stretford glory hunter have always known him to be! Said from the start he should've gone.

He's naturally left-footed, can play both wings and can cross on a six-pence.

We never played with wingers throughout the World Cup anyway so he wouldn't have got a game.

Gotta blame Capello. Heskey plays and Crouch is on the bench??? Heskey couldn't score in a brothel - unlike Rooney!

I think that England were so poor as a team and so poor as individual players that we have to be very careful not to suggest that AJ could have won us the world cup single handed. We all know he couldn't - there isn't a player so good he could have saved that England campaign, not Maradonna in '86, nor even Pele. Indeed I'm glad his future wasn't prejudiced by association with that world cup. AJ is a very bright young prospect and in fact fits the profile of many of the young players that distinguished themselves so much for Germany yesterday and his time is here NOW. As for the "who was the worst?" competition that seems to be exercising the less alert minds...As a City fan I accept Barry didn't distinguish himself. He isn't the paciest player we've got and he clearly wasn't match fit. I don't know what the problem is with Rooney, I know he's a lot, lot better than we saw in South Africa but I think the rags have got to come clean and admit that, whatever the reason, he too was hopeless. SWP was peripheral and Rio Ferdinand was one of many "sick notes" we ended up with. Manchester didn't show itself to its best advantage in SA, but did Mersyside, London, Birmingham?

I think it was a mistake by Mr Capello before the World Cup began that he didn't include Adam Johnson in the squad, but with England totally outpaced and outclassed by a brilliant young German team of soon-to-be-superstars, I think it was good for Adam that he wasn't in South Africa. He will then not have the painful memory of this defeat and the many more that has plaeuged "the golden generation" for several tournaments (and therefore have made the England team a psychologically weaker
one when they meet squads equally good as or better than themselves).

Adam can instead be one of the pinnacles in a newly moulded team consisting of players that want to play for the shirt, are young (U21), are soon-to-be-[super]stars and are selected by there skills, not because of their "name or status" in EPL. The England team of this World Cup had a resemblance more of a flawed Galácticos Real Madrid team than of an Catalonian one.

Sven, Steven, Capello tried, but failed. When will FA realise that you build a team and not one consisting of the rooney's, lampard's and terry's in England?

As always - proud of the good work Tevez & De Jong does for carrying the Manchester City flag in this World Cup. Been impressed by Yaya and Silva also! The same can be said of an old City hero in Elano, but for Robinho and RSC - am not so sure.
