Manchester City

Fowler looks to future

ROBBIE FOWLER is determined to let his boots do his talking for him this season.

And he wants them to shout loudest where they can do him the most good - on the pitch and the Carrington training ground.

The Manchester City striker, who is locked in a four-way battle for a starting berth against Fulham in a fortnight's time, is slowly rediscovering the swagger that is such an essential part of his game.

A wonderfully struck goal combined with patches of sublime interplay at Hull on Wednesday night had manager Kevin Keegan purring and Fowler himself delighted that some of the essential confidence on which his game is based is seeping back.

At first glance 29-year-old Fowler, holder of one of the top three places in the Premiership's all-time top goal-scoring list, and possessor of numerous medals and England caps, is not an obvious candidate for a chronic lack of self-belief.

However, there are precious few players who take their craft more seriously than Fowler and who shrink so quickly at unwarranted criticism from his own supporters.

Determination

There will be no shouting from the rooftops this season from Fowler about what he hopes to achieve but there is a steely determination that, given a decent run in the side, he will turn the heads of the remaining doubters - none of whom have ever questioned his effort.

"The first game was a hard game for us against Bury and I seem to be the muggins who gets all the stick in the papers but at Hull I felt sharper but I don't want to say too much about myself like `this is the season for me' because then it is easy for people to shoot me down," he ventured.

"The game the other night was a definite step up for me. Confidence-wise I felt much better. I think it is clear for people to see that I am a player that thrives on confidence and when things don't go my way, that drops a bit.

"You can refer to my goal scoring record and successes in the past but I think every season is a fresh one and what you have achieved or haven't achieved in the past goes out of the window.

"The way I look at it what I have done in the past is not nearly as important as what is coming in the future and that means scoring goals and making goals for Manchester City.

"Nicolas (Anelka) and Paulo (Wanchope) were in the side at the end of the season and my job is to get myself in there if I can.

"I am sure everyone is starting with a clean sheet as far as the manager is concerned and I doubt that he will pick his side purely on the basis of performances in pre-season games.

"It is important to work hard and show that sharpness in training on a day-to-day basis."

Instincts

Fowler will sit out tonight's trip to Wolves as he hones those natural predator's instincts still further at the Blues Carrington headquarters and will then return for the trip to Reading on Monday night when Anelka is pencilled in to make his first appearance of pre-season following a foot injury.

The Liverpudlian believes that City have approached the build-up to the start of the Premiership in the correct fashion and that the signs are promising both on and off the field.

"The first two games were not as ideal as we would have liked," he observed. "We would have preferred to have won them comfortably but the emphasis is on fitness.

"We weren't up with the pace of it at Bury or Doncaster but at Hull everyone, including the lads who came on, looked as fit as we have for while. Every time we went forward we looked as though we would cause Hull problems.

"It has been a busy pre-season with two sessions of training each day and we are benefiting from that.

"Straight from the word go we have put the emphasis on team building and hard work. At Hull we all worked hard for one another and that is a promising sign going into the season.

"We had the day out white water rafting in Wales together and that was a good exercise.

"We have always mixed well as a squad but it gave a few of the younger lads and the new players a bit more time to gel away from the training ground.

Positive

"It was a positive experience for everyone involved."

Keegan, too, has been upbeat about preparations and was particularly delighted with Fowler's contribution to the 4-0 win at the Kingston Communication Stadium.

"I am pleased with the way Robbie is working," said the manager.

"At Hull on Wednesday night he really put some sweat on his shirt. It was the sort of contest, because we had good possession and because people were on top of their games, that Robbie could get in some good positions and show what he is all about.

"At Doncaster he was never able to do that. He will never lose that quick football brain of his but, like the rest, he has to get fitter and sharper.

"We are not playing him tonight at Wolves and I have told him that we are going to give him three or four days of training to sharpen him up a bit more - not extra training because he has worked as hard as anyone in pre-season.

"Apart from his goal at Hull, Robbie's general play was excellent and we want more of that."

Well the only way for him to prove his doubters wrong is to score goals and 100% in every match. Come on Robbie 20 goals this season is not beyond you

Just looking at the picture of Robbie instills a little bit of confidence in me. He looks like he has lost a few pounds so his movement should be better this year. I'm glad he also states that he has to fight for his place because last season he expected to be in the first 11. I belive this season will be a good sucess and i would go as far as to predict a trophy may be on its way> Keep the faith. CTID

I was at Hull on wednesday night and he looked a different player to last year he has lost the flab and led the line well pity macken couldnt hit the net with 2 sitters laid on by robbie so come on blues give him a chance we always love to knock people down you never know this year he might just prove us all wrong and get 15/20 goals you dont lose skill overnight and last season he took a lot of unfair stick in my opinion Anelka was very lazy in some games his head went down Fowler always ran into spaces anelka just didnt give him the ball and one on ones how many did Anelka miss perhaps if it had been Fowler one on one he might just might have put a couple away .Lets just hope we put some of the chances away this season and i for one hope fowler gets a shed load to prove his doubters wrong .

How many chances does this guy need? As such I only think he should start if he proves himself in the reserves first.

I must say that im surprised by the fact that Kevin Keegan chooses to let him go back to train up is fitness at Carrington. Why doesn't he get the chance tonight to build on the last game and maybe score a few goals. Robbie is all about confidence and people believing in him. Sell Anelka and get a player that plays for the team and not for personal glory. Robbie lacks a partner and som service from the worst midfield in the premier league.

yeah, robbie has tobe given another chance,& more importantly some support from the stands!!! the last thing the team & fowler needs is the Boo boys getting on his back, if he continues to misfire badly,he doenst play or we palm him off on someone else

Whereas I agree that we shouldn't "boo" our own players, I think it's a bit harsh to say that the Growler hasn't had a lot of support from the crowd. I've heard his name chanted even when he's had a shocker. I am prepared to forgive him if he pulls his finger out, but I won't be happy if he's given an extended run in the team if he's obviously not playing well - but then that applies to anyone. If that does happen I won't "boo", I'll just come on here and moan!!!

Fowler is quality, granted last season he didn't do it but this season what i've seen he looks quicker and sharper, he will score goals but maybe Anelka is not the partner for him, last season i heard alot of Fowler is lazy fowler misses too many, but how many 1 on 1's did Anelka miss, how many chances did Anelka miss and when thing aren't working for him how quickly did Anelkas head drop? ome on Robbie i know you are a quality player, show the fans and more importantly the biased media what a good player you are

I believe that children are our future, teach them well and let them lead the way, show them all the beauty they posess inside, give them a helping hand, make it easier, let the childrens laughter, remind us how it used to be, Robbie decided long ago never to walk in anyones shadow if he fails if he succeeds at least he's got his dignity.

let's not confuse cause and effect. fowler is criticised because he underperforms, not vive-versa

i agree with a lot of these comments.Robbie is looking good, i really hope he rams it down those critics throats in the best posible way, GOALS and lots of em. Imagine, him and the elk both getting 20 goals, cant wait!!!!!!!!!!!!

I have slaughtered Fowler on this site because he should have done miles better last season. However, I have never criticised him at the game because he always looks as if he is about to set the world alight even if he flatters to deceive. This season is make or break for him and his career here. Glad to hear he is looking sharp in pre-season and let's hope, seeing as he is staying that he now produces what we all know he is capable of. Personally, I think he should have been sold in the summer along with one or two other under achievers but now it is clear he is staying, we should get behind him and give him the support he needs and hope he achieves the levels of performance and goal scoring that we know he is capable of. I would love it if I was forced to eat my words of a few weeks ago!

im 24 and have supported for 20 years. i never ever got as excited about a signing as wen we signed fowler. as a kid growing up he was my hero. the best finisher i have ever seen. i want to do it so much its untrue and i know hes trying. if he just lose half a stone he would be giving himself a much better chance but isnt it the coaching staff's responsibility to get the players 100 pc` fit? im glad kk has faith in him and im sure robbie will prove it justified.
