Adam Johnson now needs to show his strength of character by bouncing back after his England rejection.
But the winger who showed such incredible late-season form to make the provisional World Cup squad in the first place has the armoury to prove himself as the bargain buy of City’s modern big-spending era.
That’s according to Gary Owen, the Blues legend who is a fixture in football folklore after clocking up 22 England under-21 and nine B squad caps . . . but never winning a full international cap for his country.
“Adam’s doing better than me already because he’s got nine minutes against Mexico,” quipped M.E.N. Sport columnist Owen, who was baffled that Fabio Capello opted to make 22-year-old Johnson one of the unlucky seven axed from the final 23-strong squad that has arrived in South Africa.
Midfielder Owen, who reluctantly moved from Maine Road to West Brom in 1979, said: “Adam has shown he can do it at Premier League level after moving from the Championship and that’s an achievement in itself.
“I am surprised Capello didn’t take him to the World Cup as a wild card because he consistently spoke so highly of him.
“Johnson has impressed everyone at City and he did have some international experience in the under-21s which is a stepping stone for some! Everyone who has worked with him be it Gordon Strachan, Gareth Southgate and of course Stuart Pearce have all spoken of his qualities.
“His club manager Roberto Mancini was certainly impressed because he used him so often regularly keeping Shaun Wright-Phillips out of the team.
“What puzzled me most about Capello’s decision was that he can play on either flank and his delivery is probably better than all the other wide players.
“Having caught Capello’s eye he clearly gave it his best shot. All he can do now is build on what he did last season.
“He needs to stay in the City team first and then he’ll continue to improve especially as he’ll be much more in the public eye after actually playing for his country and so narrowly missing out.
“He has only a slight build so will build up his strength. He obviously has great strengths such as an eye for a killer pass, crossing accurately and of course an ability to beat and go past people.
“For me he is the ultimate modern day footballer getting forward but doing his fair share in defence.
“Future City legend? That’s an over-used phrase,” added Owen. “I don’t think he is anything like those other famous City wingers Dennis Tueart, Peter Barnes or Mike Summerbee who made their names in the last third.
“It’s difficult to compare and it is important that Johnson too does it in the last third showing all his energies there as well."
Johnson, who signed from Middlesbrough for just £6m in January has a great advantage over Owen who reckons his chances of full England recognition diminished as he was to an extent out of the national spotlight at WBA.
Owen said: “Bryan Robson had to move from WBA to United before he got noticed and his career took off so well.
“Adam will just have to do what I did and battle on. Its all about strength of character but he will be fine I’m absolutely sure of that as he improves on a season that ended with him going so close to actually going to a World Cup.
“The best advice is to follow what Rio Ferdinand has been saying, for after all he’s had disappointments in his career, and that’s to work hard at your club and get into the next squad.
“In the cold light of day, he can reflect he’s already caught the national coach’s eye so needs to step up and work on what he achieved in the last half of the season."
Owen’s disappointment for Johnson has been tempered by his delight for long-standing City favourite Wright-Phillips who pipped Theo Walcott for a place in the 23.
“It is brilliant for Shaun,” he said. “If he had been discarded it would have been devastating for him after missing out last time.
“Against Japan in 45 minutes he showed that bulldog spirit Capello has been asking for from his England team. He knew one wide player wasn’t going to South Africa and was determined it was not going to be him. He played as if to say ‘I’m on that plane.”
What do you think? Have your say.

I expect him to play a major part in CITY winning the title within two years!

He will get over it & he should now book himself a nice long, hot holiday & come back stronger next season. I hope we won't all be saying 'I told you so!' to Capello... England won't win the WC but they should entertain the masses for the next few weeks!!
Great article by Chris Bailey on City's site today! Basically says that until new signings are announced on mcfc they are just rumours & speculation! Doesn't look like Maicon will be coming, as he wants to go to Real. No matter it's his loss!
Can't say I agree with the way the squad was announced by the way! Should have been done & dusted by lunchtime, with phone calls made & squad announced. The speculation & guesswork by the media was really annoying & totally unnecessary!!
Anyway, bit of a lull now before the WC kicks off... have you noticed how many 'non football' journos are now getting a free holiday to show us 'the other side of South Africa!'... Must be costing a fortune!!

Another thing that confuses is me is the choice to take Carrick instead of Parker??!!!
That could come back to haunt Capello!

The amazing thing is that, despite what he said in the past, Capello has done a complete 180 degree turn on several issues. Firstly, he has picked one or two players who are clearly not in form. Secondly, he has taken at least four players (three of them defenders) who are carrying injuries. And finally, he has ignored everything he has said for two years and taken a player who can't get a start ahead of the player who regularly did start in his place. If Barry fails to make it, that means that we are going to a World Cup which the press are building us up as capable of winning without one single left footed player in the whole squad. I'm really sorry to disappoint you folks, but it ain't gonna happen. If we make the quarters, we'll have done as well as we could expect.
The person who is really disappointed though will be AJ and I think the only two things that prevented him for going was that he didn't quite have enough time at City and, for all his faults, SWP has the international experience. Had AJ spent a whole season with us, he woudld have been a nailed on certainty and I fully expect him to be a permanent fixture in the England team in the build up to 2012. He'll get over it quickly. He is probably still pinching himself about everything that has happened to him in the last six months because his rise has been little short of meteoric. And I'm sure SWP won't let us down. I wouldn't say as much about most of the other 22 though!

aj should take satisfaction he was in the 30 man squad to start with and build from there. still, shame though he is a classic winger, direct and fast and would of put the shakes into any teams defence in group stages.

Once again, I have to latch on to your positve comments. It is exceptional to have an Academy young man come through, join our great club and aim high for top honours and represent his country. Adam has an outstanding opportunity to reach the top and stay there for years.
My advice would always be follow the example of Beckham and Ronney, stay behind after normal training and focus on weaknesses and practice, practice and practice that I know will strengthen skills and make one a better player. Ned and Micah also take note, as you both can become better players and still make the England squad in the future.
At City make it difficult for Roberto not to play you. We read Roberto is happy with his squad of which you are a part of so lets get motivated and get our brains in gear. I look forward to the World Cup for sure but cannot wait for the EPL season to get underway. Adders I am sure you feel the same but in the meantime you Mrs Adders and your family and not least the pets have a great summer.

If we finish second, we are more than likely to be up against Germany in the round of 16 which is not a prospect I would relish knowing our record against them in finals since 1966. Have we beaten them since then? I think not. (And I am not counting qualifiers here - finals only). If we win then the rest group is a bit of a group of death so we could be up against any of Serbia, Ghana or Australia. On paper, Serbia would be the likely candidates and I would just abaout fancy our chances against them and definitely against the other two which is why it is very important to avoid the Germans.

Congratulations to the England U17's for winning the Euro Championship for their age group by beating Spain at the weekend.
