The ex-City winger feels that Roberto Mancini's best chance of securing that priceless place at the end of the season is to attack, attack and attack some more.
That would mean abandoning the cautious use of three unadventurous midfielders which provoked such criticism in recent league games against Liverpool and Stoke, and go for the front-foot approach which blew away Chelsea in the second half of last week's 4-2 win.
"I'd love to see, and I'm sure City fans would agree, a 4-4-2 with Adam Johnson on the left, Shaun Wright-Phillips on the right, and Carlos Tevez and Craig Bellamy together up front," said Barnes.
"The more attacking talent you have out there the better, for me, and those four going at teams with pace and skill is a frightening prospect for any opposition.
"Stick two from Gareth Barry, Nigel de Jong and Stevie Ireland in the centre, and that is your six to try to grab that final Champions League place."
The Blues this week begin the countdown to the final third of the season, beginning with Sunday's trip to Sunderland, followed by a tricky visit to Fulham and a home clash with Wigan.
But Barnes has already eyed up a three-match run near the end of the season which could make or break the Blues' dreams.
"We go to West Ham on the final day, but before that we have United at home, Arsenal away and Aston Villa at home on consecutive weekends," he said.
"Those are three murderous games. Having said that, we have proved ourselves capable of winning those big games, having beaten Chelsea home and away, Arsenal twice at home, and United in the first leg of the Carling Cup semi.
City test
"So the real test may be the games against the likes of Sunderland and Fulham, because some of our performances in that type of game have been woeful."
The Chelsea result has given everyone around the club a lift, says Barnes, but the optimism it sparked needs to be reined in, and the hard work re-doubled.
"All season it has been five paces forward, then six back, and that has to stop," he says.
"But you have to remember that we were a little lucky at Chelsea because we were awful for most of the first half, and their goalkeeper had a stinker."
Barnes' former City and West Brom team-mate Gary Owen focuses on the home clashes with Spurs and Villa as key to the Blues' fortunes.
"The beauty of it is that the whole thing is in our hands, as we have that game in hand," said MEN Sport columnist Owen.
"We play Villa in the next-to-last game, and that could be vital. It would be nice to see Villa and Spurs carry on in the FA Cup, as that could prove a nice little distraction for them.
"Both of those teams also have to come to our stadium, and if we take maximum points from both, it would put a hell of a dent in their chances of hitting that fourth spot.
Blues form
"But the truth is that, with so few games left, every match is a big one. It's Sunderland next, and they have been in a dreadful run of form and won't look forward to playing us.
"We also have one eye on the home Manchester derby, but these days we are looking forward to derbies, whereas we used to dread them not too long ago."
Owen wants to see the defence really come into its own - after a season of mixing and matching the back four has led to some hit-and-miss form.
Mancini is now close to finding a settled back four in Pablo Zabaleta or Micah Richards, Vincent Kompany, Joleon Lescott and Wayne Bridge, and that could make a big difference.
"The defenders have had almost a full season to get used to each other now, albeit the team has chopped and changed," said Owen.
"There is strong competition right throughout the team with just about everyone fit and well, and that defence has enough calibre to make us a difficult team to break down.
"There are players who still need to take a step up, but Shaun Wright-Phillips has a World Cup dangled in front of him, and Emmanuel Adebayor needs to get his form back."
Liverpool are being seen as the main threats to City's chances, certainly by the bookies.
But Owen has mixed feelings: "My head tells me Tottenham, but my heart tells me it will be Liverpool," he said.
"Harry Redknapp has done a remarkable job, but Spurs have one eye on the FA Cup, and you feel that Liverpool have been here before. They also now have Torres and Gerrard back."
How do you think City are shaping up for the run-in? Have your say.

As for his comments about the derby I don't look forward to derbies at all now. We haven't won one for two years since the Benjani shoulder goal at OT and nited treat the derby like a cup final now, it's definately their biggest league fixture.

The reality is that pragmatism will have to come before romantisism
If we finish fourth, do I mind how we play between now and the end of the season? "No, I dont"
If we finish fifth in a blaze of attacking glory, and in so doing, miss out on signing at least two or three world class players in the close season to help us bid for the title next season, will I be happy ? "No, I wont"
This is not the time of the season to throw caution to the wind
It is in our hands - If we win every match that remains by keeping a clean sheet amd snatching a goal, we will finish fourth or even higher - we wont need to worry about goal difference
We have waited a long to get into a position where we could qualify for the Champions League. For one, I dont give a stuff how we do it

Actually George, I think we just need to win - anything more than that is a bonus.

He was a lovely player to watch.
We need to stick with the team who beat Chelsea ( injuries permitting) and just raise the tempo, hopefully by having the same eleven they will improve anyway. Just think Johnson/SWP need to share the role depending on who the opposition is!
Having Tevez back and Barry upping his game with a settled back 4 should hopefully make a huge difference. Like to see Kompany as Captain though.
Its a big ask 4th place, as Villa and Liverpool have a settled team used to playing alongside each other and are looking stronger.
Come on City.

I am sure that we were missing a key player called Tevez, for the first two games and getting Micah back to play from injury has helped in freeing Zab,while RSC ,Petrov and Kolo's injuries do affect choices....why can't we just trust Mancini to do what is right.....by the way Barnes we were not front foot at Chelsea,we were always decidely back foot attacking with speed on the break.....the genius of Mancini...
And the the coup de grace....from Owen...
"My head tells me Tottenham, but my heart tells me it will be Liverpool," he said.
I support City,so I believe that we can win the title and every game, and if we don't then the next one.....that's how it works.....I believe.....you two however, are not even using your brains.....

All for the 4-4-2 and ....wait for it....BRING BACK KEEGAN and have Stuart Pearce as his number 2! Can you imagine it? Keegan with his attacking mentality, our strikers and wingers would buzz off it and our defence, especially the english lads, (a more mature) Richards, Bridge and Lescott having the experience and aggression of Pearce! Am I off my head to even think this? I think not. You all know I'm right and I can sense the whole of Manchester getting excited at the prospect!

erm Peter, 4th place does not get you in to the 'Champions League'.
It gets you into a 2-leg play off with a team from Italy(4th), Spain (4th), Germany (3rd), France (3rd), Holland (2nd).
So no doubt City fans think that (as it stands) Juventus, Sevilla, Lyon, Leverkusen and PSV Eindhoven will be pushovers...

However will Mancini have too much pride to 'ditch' his awful negative approach to our needs and that is getting something out of this season. What hopes we had about our first trophy in 34 years went up in smoke through negative tactics and being far too cautious in games where the tempo is too slow.Mancini has to change his policy now not when all is gone and it will do if his players are to be mandated defending slender leads in the remaining 11 games.YES Peter is spot on when he says RM should adopt a 4-4-2 for the remainder of the season why not we might as well qualify in style and if we fail well our manager and his players have at least had a go instead of boring us all to pieces.
Peter went on to say what exactly I thought regarding the Chelsea game because YES we were awful in the first half and as I've said on a previous post we should have gone 2-0 down before Tevez scored the equaliser.
Thanks for your comments Peter I just hope Mancini and Kidd take them on board and go for it in style because thats what the real fans of City want!

This team needs to focus on defence for 100% of the game or it gets taken apart by the sucker punch of even the poorest teams (ie Hull, Burnley).
I'll be happy with a few painfully dull 1-0 wins.
The club can't move on until the defence is built on sounder foundations and when you are confident of keeping clean sheets, the club can attack with more freedom.
