And with a target of 70 points within reach, City's £200m squad know that now is the time to stand up and be counted.
Just ask Shay Given. "It's a big carrot getting into the Champions League, and we've got to push hard now until the end of the season," said the Blues' keeper.
Given has been one of City's more consistent performers this season - but even he has not escaped criticism during a dramatic campaign.
The 34-year-old occupies one of the safer first-team berths at Eastlands, but knows there is absolutely no room for slacking off.
For if there's one thing the experienced keeper and his team-mates have learned this season, it's that under-achievement will not be tolerated by those running the club.
Mark Hughes lost his job in December after just two defeats in 21 league and cup games, having failed to convince chairman Khaldoon al Mubarak that he could keep the club on track for a top-four finish.
His successor Roberto Mancini has spoken of working 18-hour days as he bids to bring success to Eastlands.
But he knows that failure to qualify for the Champions League could spell the end of his reign as City boss.
So the pressure is on, for manager and players. For some of those players, the next 11 matches offer a chance to cement reputations. For others, it's more a case of salvaging futures. For every Carlos Tevez, there is a Kolo Toure.
Tevez proved against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge last Saturday just why Mancini was so keen to get him back from Argentina.
It was little short of astonishing that Tevez could put in such a performance so soon after stepping off a long flight from Argentina, where he had returned to tend to his seriously-ill new-born daughter.
The striker refused to give Chelsea's defenders a moment's peace, scoring an equaliser when he had no right to, and then coolly converting a pressure penalty as City won 4-2.
There were those who questioned the signing of Tevez at the start of the season, as he battled to regain full fitness following a heel injury.
A record of 17 goals in his last 15 starts proves that he is City's man in form as they prepare for the run-in.
Adebayor form
All the same, City could do with Emmanuel Adebayor taking some of the goal-scoring burden off his shoulders when he has served the final three games of a four-match ban.
An on-song Adebayor is unstoppable, but he has struggled to build momentum since arriving from Arsenal for £25m last summer.
Mancini has made it plain that he sees the striker as a big part of City's future. Once he returns from suspension, Adebayor will get a big chance to make himself an Eastlands hero.
Craig Bellamy's display at Stamford Bridge also showed that he is back on form after injury interrupted his progress.
Mancini has admitted to having at least one disagreement with the Welshman since taking charge at Eastlands in December - a dispute over how best to manage his long-term knee problem.
But Bellamy is only fired by a raging desire for success. His knee didn't stop him from scoring a double at Stamford Bridge, demonstrating that he can still produce on the big occasion.
But producing on the big occasion has not been City's problem this season. They have beaten Chelsea twice, Arsenal twice and United once.
It's the dropping of points to Hull, Burnley, Bolton and Wigan that have checked the Blues' progress.
And while the forward line has produced a steady flow of goals, the defence has wobbled too often.
Confidence
Even the reliable Given has not escaped the flak here. The keeper has proved himself an outstanding shot-stopper - and at £8m from Newcastle, the best signing Hughes made during his 18-month reign.
But he is not the most commanding keeper in the air, and that was highlighted in both FA Cup games against Stoke.
At Eastlands, Given remained rooted to his line as Ricardo Fuller darted in to head an equaliser. And at the Britannia Stadium, he was beaten to the punch as Ryan Shawcross darted in to head Stoke towards a 3-1 victory.
But Given will be helped by the growing confidence of Joleon Lescott, who is now starting to look the real deal after a shaky start in City colours.
Hughes went to great lengths to sign Lescott from Everton last summer, and his assured performance under pressure at Stamford Bridge showed why. If your goalkeeper is not the type to come for lots of crosses, you need a centre-back willing to get his head on balls. Lescott is that man.
He seems to be developing a good understanding with Vincent Kompany, the unassuming utility man who had to be patient after battling back from a toe injury.
Whether Kompany will be the long-term partner for Lescott at centre-back remains to be seen. But the Belgium international's sheer versatility marks him out as a valuable squad player.
Kompany, though, was never the intended first choice to partner Lescott. Toure was supposed to be the main man in central defence, but has been a major disappointment this season.
The club captain's form has wobbled alarmingly, and he has much work to do to convince Mancini that he has a long-term City future. And while the City boss has spoken of his admiration of left-back Wayne Bridge, the right-back slot is a puzzle still to be solved.
Fans
Micah Richards is the man in possession of the role for now, and Mancini will be hoping that the youngster can iron out the inconsistencies in his game.
But it's in midfield where perhaps the biggest question marks lie. Nigel de Jong's willingness to get stuck in dragged him into international controversy this week, but has won him many fans at Eastlands.
Gareth Barry hasn't always hit the heights after a brilliant start to the season - but perhaps a few days' breather after an impressive midweek performance for England against Egypt will recharge his batteries for the run-in.
Stephen Ireland tends to perform best in an attacking midfield position behind a lone striker, a role that generally hasn't been available this season in City's formation.
And while Shaun Wright-Phillips tries to sort out an improved contract, Martin Petrov would just be glad of any contract at all. The Bulgarian winger's deal looks increasingly unlikely to be renewed when it runs out in the summer.
By then, City might just be on the road to Champions League riches. The next 11 games could be as significant as any in the club's history.
Which part of City's squad needs the most attention? Have your say.

I honestly dont think much has improved since the Italian came in and results have shown us all that.Forget about the Chelsea game because in all reality it was Chelsea who lost the game themselves through complacency progressing to downright bad defending. At 1-0 Chelsea should have gone 2-0 up when they missed a glorious chance and we went down to the other end and Tevez plundered a scuffed equaliser, had we gone 2-0 behind at that stage I am pretty sure Chelsea would have gone on to win the game comfortably but as the old cliche says "if you dont take your chances your opponents will make you pay" as it was Chelsea folded like a pack of cards lost their shape, lost their discipline and in truth made it easy for us.
With 11 games to go the crunch has yet to come but when you consider the performances against the likes of Wigan,Hull,Stoke,Everton,Spurs and Burnley at home they are the games that seen our team fail misreably.
It irritates me greatly when like this weekend we have no match because we couldn't beat Stoke at home in the 5th round of the FA Cup when taking the vast ammount of money spent in the Summer into consideration our season now is dependent on us outstaying Liverpool,Spurs and Villa for 4th spot but considering our inconsistency it has to be questioned whether or not our team are capable.Having said that the tactics Mancini is adamant on utilising cost us a place in the Carling Cup final so perhaps most of our team or somewhat restricted being mandated to play formations foreign to their game.
Sorry but Mancini for me has created our season as turning out to be flat and although mathematically finishing 4th is still a possibility the vibes tell me Liverpool have a monmentum similar to the one our manager gave United after they knocked us out of the CC that will win them the last Champions League place and watching this weeks FA Cup quarter finals just makes me furious that City are no longer involved because of poor performances against Stoke and United in both the domestic Cups where more belief may have took us forward but it wasn't to be and I blame Mancini. No doubt I will be castigated for expressing an honest opinion but in truth having followed City all these years witnessing so much adversity, false Dawns, empty dreams and poor management it does make you rather apprehensive but why should we kid ourselves --THIS IS MAN CITY----

Ted Knott
But the results do show a vast improvement in league form Ted. Last 10 PL games under Hughes we won 2, drew 7 and lost 1. First 10 under Mancini and we have won 6, drawn 2 and lost 2. That means 13 points in Hughes last 10 league games and 20 in Mancinin's first 10.
Now that, to me, is an improvement, even if it isn't to you Ted. We can all argue about the merits or otherwise of some of the wins, draws and losses but we have got 20 points under Mancini and maintained a very strong interest in the fourth spot that was quickly disappearing under Hughes

I think if you ask Portsmouth they would rather stay in the Prem and give up going to Wembley. Keep the faith, 4th spot is ours to lose.

Ted, please give it a rest , you are so negative.
You simply are not being castigated for giving your opinion. You are being castigated because you are wrong.
Bornblue has taken the time to point out to you that we are in a better position.
By the way did you explain why you got it so wrong against Chelsea last week ? Because I must have missed that explanation....
City's season is not over and it will go down to the last games for deciding which team gets fourth and Third positions. City have as good a chance as any of the other teams in the race. We could sure do with a couple of games at home though rather than be stuck with the away games. However, as the Chelsea game proved, all of the remaining games are winnable, even the Arsenal game. No, I don't expect City to win the remaining games but I am sure as hell going to enjoy watching the games.

Ted you are one miserable old sod who bores the a*se off me with your constant doom and gloom messages.
If you can't post anything positive - and I'm yet to see any sign of it - then why bother posting your usual miserable drivel ?
Clearly you give City no credit for the win at Chelsea, and that is just pathetic. Having taken sruggled for 40 minutes to contain Chelsea , City pulled themselves back into the game, and in the second half, tooke the game to the opposition and deserved to be in a winning position.
If a "top 4" team like Chelsea can't break down a team for 40 minutes, then the opposing team must be doing something right.
You and other whingers and moaners, and we have too many so-called City fans like that, make me sick of your constant negativity. However Ted, you are way out in front and fully deserve an award for your griping, miserable, negative posting on this site.
For goodness sake, get real or shut up whinging !!
Mancini is doing a decent job, given that he has only been allowed to buy Adam Johnson, and bring in Viera on a free.
Hughes spent a fortune, and the promising kids never got a look in. Mancini has shown that he is not frightened of playing young players who show that they have the right attributes of ability and confidence .
Ted you deserve castigating, not for expressing an opinion, but for constantly being so negative and miserable. If the burden of folowing City is getting you down, there is a very simple answer..........but you would miss the whinging too much.
I will pray for you tomorrow, but there is only so much that HE can do !!!

Thanks for such positive and spot on comments. Our fans need to show positiveness, whilst we accept their comments of concern. I refuse to be gloomy and negative about our chances. The team is progressing and the Manager is working his best with the players. Let's keep the faith City fans!

Its the shambles at Don Valley, where Dale were forced to play on an unfit pitch with glass and debris still in the ground from an earlier concert.... the won but didn't deserve it ..... and the thing that infuriated me most was how they treated Keith Hill with Utter disrespect ...... he was made to look like he was making excuses for the defeat - he wasn't able to say what he thought about the pitch because he knew it would look like he was a sore loser. I am sure that tonight he has finally got sweet revenge..... a real six pointer of a match that puts ale 8 points clear.
I am absolutely delighted....brilliant! Absolutely destroyed a very good league two side.
If we beat Notts Co at Meadow Land (our last big six pointer) we will have one foot in League as CHAMPIONS.

We should be looking at finishing third not worrying about the teams below us.
No cup distractions and several players coming back to full fitness and form.
Home form is excellent and I think we will start winning some more away games 1-0.

Colin Bell's boots -- if you resent my honest opinions ignore them and dont come back on spewing out vitriolic remarks towards me I dont mind honestly Lol.But I'll say this a certain narrow minded bigot from Wimslow wont stop me constructively criticising something that needs addressing. God I suspect he is probably much more misreable than I am if the truth is known not witnessing City EVER winning a trophy hence his low standards and just happy to see City not get relegated and out of sheer bias and cannot accept his beloved team as being average especially under Mancini who lets be right knows little about the English game and the PL simply tells most of us long suffering City fans he is out of his depth.
On knowing City's past and the scripts that are written is Colin Bell's boots confident about beating Sunderland next weekend? Firstly Steve Bruce's team haven't won a single home game since early November so theres a script of its own and add to this we are past masters of the three step dance routine of one step forward and two steps back, the winning mentality is not there yet,our mental strength is weak and complacency kicks in too easily after a win that is the stark reality of it I'm sorry to say where just next week alone anything less than a win wont be good enough and with our inconsistency.
With 33 points left to play for my prediction is we will finish on 67 points whether that will be suffice to finish in the top four only time will tell but considering the squad Mancini had at his disposal it will constitute a major disappointment where expectations were far higher and the telling moments have been when we have played most of the sides in the bottom half of the league plus of course Mancini's appalling tactics.
Please dont get me wrong I will be delighted if we beat Sunderland and go on a run of consequtive victories but the vibes tell me this time next week the site will be full of MISREABLE City fans complaining about our team's inability to beat another team in the also ran Division of the Premier League.
Finally read a few other comments from fellow blues fans Colin Bell's boots you will find they too agree with my concerns and honest opinions but there we are! DONT WORRY BE A HAPPY --

doing the double over chelsea shows we are the only one of the chasing pack that can hurt the big 4 when it comes down to it. as pointed out our problem has been a few of the so called lesser teams, although no game is easy, and that is down to the incocistencies bought on by a new team still gelling at various points in the season.
the key for me is that we have villa, spurs at everton on our patch and i believe, as in the cup, we can beat UTD at home as well - why not. i fancy ade to get us somthing at the emirates as well.
the next 2 away games are crucial - 4 points would set us up nicely, and we still have the game in hand...............
