The Blues have America in their sights as part of their plans to expand the club's profile on a global level and are mulling over a tour across the Atlantic in July.
They will also target the US as the second stage of their scheme to roll out the successful City academy across the planet, with the first phase already underway in Abu Dhabi.
Chief executive Garry Cook has held preliminary talks with MLS commissioner Don Garber, who was attending this week's Soccerex convention in Manchester.
Garber is keen to get European clubs involved in the MLS, and recently held talks with Barcelona and Real Madrid about investing in one of their franchises as they seek to expand their league.
City, who have scrapped the idea of buying a franchise in Indian Premier League cricket, would have to stump up around £25m, and new teams are being formed in Philadelphia this year, and in Vancouver and Portland next year.
Cook has strong links with Portland - said to be one of the destinations for the summer tour - as he formerly worked as a marketing executive for Nike, based in the Oregon city. The Blues are also considering matches in Philadelphia and New York.
Garber said of the City talks: "Part of the relaunch of that team is for them to think strategically about their business and where international expansion fits into that, and where the US might fit into that.
"We've had very preliminary discussions about that."
The MLS want links with Europe in order to improve the quality of players coming through their system, and that would dovetail neatly with City's international academy plan, which is headed up by former Academy director Jim Cassell.
What do you think? Have your say.

Surely this is the owner just buying another franchise, like he did with our club. I understand the feeder club link etc and academy plans but would it be MCFC buying an MLS side?
What I would say though is that having spent some time living in Canada, there is a huge chasm between the franchises in the US and those in Canada. Canadian NHL teams constantly struggled to get the world class players to cross the border because of tax, weak C$ etc. So whilst Vancouver would be a nice option (lots of ex pats and football is gaining popularity over there despite all kids leaving the womb in skates) it probably wouldn't reap the rewards that Philadelphia would.

This would be a good move and if we can bring our academy skills to the forefront in the US, we are bound to unearth some real talent, with first dabs on any of these players.
Don't mess this one up Cooky!! This could be a very beneficial project for Manchester City...The best team in the land and all the World!

Everyone expands in America.

It is imperative that we truly expand into other countries because thus far the efforts of PL clubs has been very poor indeed. Clubs such as United talk of a large fan base in countries such as Malaysia and that is all it is - a base. What you have to do is yield a revenue stream from that base. How many times have you been to somewhere like Bangkok and people tell you they support United yet they are wearing copy United tops that the clubs makes nothing from? They would never go to a game, pay to watch MUTV, buy DVD's etc. A quick 3 game tour may raise the profile but doesn't raise cash. Raise awareness, raise cash, raise profits.
What I have mooted a few times is that given that we can now afford a large squad of quality players we should field a touring side that is still a very, very strong City side almost on a par with our first team. This side can be deployed in the Cups at home and can tour the world showcasing the club. This is where players like Robinho could fill in. In America, Australia, Brazil, Malaysia etc people would turn out in drives and especially in the US they expect a few tricks, stepovers and spectacular shots on goal. The side would mainly consist of flair players but make no doubt about it, the side would be a serious side that can slot in as and when in order to give our regular first team squad a break.
When they arrive in a city there will be a lot of promotion, meet and greets and space in the centre of town that would be the 'City Experience' where people can meet players, buy merchandise, watch a live game Premier League etc. At this there will be people seeking out fans to join the City Overseas Supporters club taking a nominal monthly direct debit from them. That way they get to keep in touch with what is going on and we have the revenue stream. It may be a nominal fee (£5 pcm) but if you could recruit 500,000 worldwide you then have an extra £30m coming in on top f what they might buy from the store. This £30m would more than finace the side.
So rather than having a tired and uninterested first team squad touring China at the end of a long season you have this flair side. This would bring great benefit to the club on a regular ongoing basis all year round.
There are all manner of ideas on the table and we will drive some of these forward.

Hi, I think you will find that the potential purchase of an IPL Team was to make use of the State of the Art Cricket Stadium in Abu Dhabi. Personally I thought this was a credible idea. There is a huge second and third country national population in the Emirates that would have packed the Stadium for home games. Travel distances for the teams would not be that much more than for normal away games in India.
This would have brought another level of awareness for City to the Emirates, India, and well the World where Cricket (esp 20/20) is watched likeSouth Africa, Australia, NZ, Windies, Pakistan etc. Along with India, all are emerging markets for soccer.
Soccer in India is still in its infancy, but burgeoning. if City were to have got into the IPL market place, their name would have been on billboards everywhere. I don't know if you realise how big cricket is in India.
To tell yo truth, it wouldn't surprise me if City became a Sports Club rather than a Football Club in the near future. The signs are there.

Last time you posted a lame comment along similar lines to that you worded it "...us Bon Jovi fans..." now it's "...us and Bon Jovi".
So suddenly you're not a Bon Jovi fan anymore!?! But we know better. Probably best if you just scuttle off to get on with living on a prayer.
