But Kop legend Ian Rush believes that the error will not cost the Scousers their Champions League spot, as the race for fourth place intensifies.
Bellamy bounced back to spectacular form with two goals in City's 4-2 demolition of Chelsea on Saturday.
And it upped the stakes in the four-team chase for the final Champions League spot, with Rush hoping that Rafa Benitez's decision to release Bellamy to West Ham does not come back to bite him.
"His form was fantastic at the start of the season and he is a matchwinner," said Rush. "I was sorry to see him leave Liverpool because I could see what he had to offer."
Form
The Stamford Bridge brace left City fans with double encouragement. Not only do they now have the prospect of finishing the season with Carlos Tevez and Bellamy in red-hot form, but it was also the perfect antidote to talk that Bellamy is unhappy at the club.
That was fuelled by reports that Bellamy had a row with boss Roberto Mancini about the best way to manage a long-standing knee injury. The only surprise from seasoned Bellamy-watchers was that it had taken the fiery Welshman two months to have a disagreement with the new boss.
Mancini's predecessor Mark Hughes saw the striker's outbursts as a welcome part of everyday life at Carrington, to be treated with a wry grin rather than any outrage.
Bellamy's famous rant at Robinho after last season's defeat at Portsmouth was secretly approved by Hughes and his management team.
Mancini appears to have quickly adopted the same attitude. He believes that a feisty attitude is "normal."
And Rush says that to get the best from his fellow Wales international, you have to accept the full package.
"A lot of people don't like Craig, but not the supporters of the team he plays for because you can see how much he cares," said Rush.
"He is a winner and that fiery side of his character is part of that. If you take that away from him, you would lose part of his game and the edge that makes him such a problem for the opposition.
Pressure
"The thing about Craig is that he's passionate about his football and wants to play. So when he doesn't, he gets frustrated. But is that a fault? Wouldn't you rather have someone who wants to be out there?"
Bellamy has been winding down his international career. He was not named in the Wales squad which faces Sweden tonight, even though manager John Toshack had not spoken to the player.
Earlier in the season, then assistant manager Mark Bowen said the club would not be putting any pressure to Bellamy to end his international career, and Mancini has adopted the same attitude.
Bellamy and Mancini certainly do not appear to carry any baggage from their disagreement last month, although it has launched speculation that Tottenham are lining up a summer bid for the player.
The Italian had no hesitation in putting the 30-year-old back in the starting line-up for what was one of the biggest games of the season, at Chelsea.
And afterwards, Bellamy was full of smiles and looking forward to the run-in to the end of the season.
Rush feels he may end up disappointed, as Liverpool's surge up the table has now been reinforced by the return of Fernando Torres.
"Liverpool have been there, fighting for a Champions League place, and know what it takes. City do not."
With Tevez and Bellamy in harness, City fans will beg to differ. And Tevez has quickly become the Welshman's No 1 fan.
"Craig Bellamy is the best player at City," Tevez said after the win at Chelsea.
"I'm very happy for him that he scored two goals, and I'm happy for the team and the supporters."

If he's in your team, you love him! - If he's not in your team, you hate him....
And he is loved at City at the moment for playing like he is and saying the things that most think but don't say: The boys got a pair!!!

I have to admit though, he has proved all of my doubts in him to be totally unfounded. His enthusiasm, energy and commitment have changed my opinion completely. I now actually admire his frankness of opinion and straight to the point direct approach.
Honesty can hurt just as much as the truth in many respects and there are those that just don't like that.
For me Craig has proved to his critics that he is a fantastic footballer. I hope he can last as long as possible at City and impart some of his winning persona onto the young lads coming through.
If he just teaches those younger lads the meaning of "The harder you work, the harder it is to surrender." then that will be a bonus.
I can understand that Craigs style may not be to everyones liking but I don't think it can really be seen as a fault.
Keep up the good work Craig and long may you prove those doubters like me wrong.

Roque has to be sold in summer, carthorse.
Tevez is class and with bellers on left and get aaron lennon on right side to jostle with Johnson who will need nurturing.
Still think we may just miss out on 4th. Tough run in at home with Villa, Spurs, Utd and Everton 4 of the 5 games.

I am so glad that he has proved me wrong. The more I see of him the more I like, and I mean like very much: his skill, wholeheartedness and honesty - and I mean honesty in the true sense - not the footballspeak. He is forthright in his opinions - no BS - and that is refreshing when there are so many banal pundits, players and commentators out there eg Jamie Redknapp, Alan Shearer, Martin Tyler etc.

At the present time we are in the best position but five games ago we were seven points clear of Liverpool with a game in hand so today it is much more closer and I wonder have some of our players got the mental strength to fight off Liverpool's challenge?
YES LFC have the experience of qualifying for the Champions league most of our squad haven't and this can be vital, moreso sometimes you dont know what City team are going to turn up in some games.
Dont get me wrong LFC are nowhere near what they was in terms of winning a battle such as what could occur betweem themselves,City,Villa and Spurs but their experience could well be their nap hand. When we look back at our dire results against the likes of Hull,Stoke,Wigan,Portsmouth and Everton they are games that should have been won and ones that now could cost us dearly and outsiders looking at those results will argue that we are just not good enough to finish in fourth place.
At the moment it is still in our own hands but has Mancini got the ability to galvernise our team for this one last push? He certainly has little or no PL experience in this situation which does worry me but the bottom line is finishing outside the top four will cost him his job and one he was paid so well to do with a massive transfer fund.

Careful misery guts - there was a very slight degree of positivity in the post - until your closing speech, naturally.
Why how much money did he have at his disposal in the lat transfer window, or are talking about the next window - assuming he is still the manager ?
Presumably the Sheik and Cook use you as their " sounding board" on such matters!
Stull waiting for your retraction of the Chelsea result !!!

They were the most boring team we have had to suffer in a long time at SportCity.
No point worrying about anyone around us:we need to be pushing on and aiming for at least third place.
