Sadly for them, the problem will be buying a future.
And after City, for the second time this season, edged a hard-fought draw against the Scousers, the visitors should start to realise that the past is past.
Forget the arrogance implicit in the "no history" statements of Javier Mascherano and Dirk Kuyt, who seem to think history is only a reflection of the trophies you have won, rather than something which every club in the country has, in rich variety.
City have their own rich history, and if Kuyt and Mascherano don't know that, put it down to ignorance.
But they should all know that in football, the present and the future is all - and on this evidence, City are pressing ahead more boldly than the Anfield side.
If Liverpool truly want to know where history gets you when recession bites, they should ask Wolves or Nottingham Forest.
And if they want to know how much of their kind of "history" money can buy, they need look no further than the top of the table, and Chelsea.
Had it not been for an indifferent display from referee Peter Walton, City could easily have won the game.
The Northants official missed plenty, but his worst error came after an assault by Javier Mascherano which would have warranted a straight red but didn't even bring a free-kick.
The national media have been queuing up to pan this game as a major disappointment, one commentator describing it as the "worst game of the season".
Said commentator clearly didn't make it as far as the Britannia Stadium last Tuesday night!
City tactics
At least, this game was intriguing on a tactical level, and the two sets of fans were absorbed, even if a neutral watcher might have wanted to see more attacking enterprise.
And, while goalmouth action was in short supply, the dullness could largely be laid at Liverpool's door.
They set out to negate and to nullify. At least the Blues, albeit forced into it by the suspension of Patrick Vieira, played with Stevie Ireland advanced, and with two wingers in Shaun Wright-Phillips and Adam Johnson.
City needed a response after a week which had resonated with ill feeling, whether real, imagined or exaggerated.
The poverty of the performance at Stoke needed to be rectified, and the rumours bouncing around about rows between the manager and Craig Bellamy, and training -ground disgruntlement, needed to be put to bed.
There is no better place to dismiss such tittle-tattle than out on the pitch, and City certainly did not look like a team in disarray.
Mancini's response to the dreadful performance at Stoke was to ring the changes, with skipper Kolo Toure and Roque Santa Cruz being demoted to the bench, and Wayne Bridge, Vincent Kompany and Stevie Ireland returning.
It brought an instant result, with City looking far more secure at the back whenever Liverpool - hardly the most adventurous of sides - crept into their half.
Kompany brings extra height to the back four, as well as a degree of composure and certainty.
But most of the first-half action was at the other end, as the Blues tried to slice or bludgeon a way through the packed ranks of the Mersey-siders.
Liverpool defence
Liverpool have now not conceded a first-half goal for nine matches, and theirs is a particularly unappealing brand of football.
Vieira's absence forced the City manager to abandon any plans he may have had to repeat the defensive three-man midfield he employed to such poor effect at Stoke.
The result was that City were immediately on the front foot, and they looked so much the better for it.
If anyone was going to win the game, it was going to be the Blues, but the absence of Carlos Tevez - still in Argentina - was again glaring.
The wing-play of both Johnson and Wright-Phillips failed to unlock, even though Sweepy threatened at times in the first half, and the confident new boy frequently forced Liverpool to double up their markers.
Emmanuel Adebayor also rose to the challenge, isolated as he often was.
This was his best display for some time, even if Pepe Reina beat away his volley which was arrowing inside the near post - and was the best chance of the match. He should also have done better with a header after Kompany - showing he is as subtle and able in the opponents' box as in his own - delicately lifted a cross to him ten minutes from the end.
The Premier League is toying with the idea of introducing play-offs to determine the fourth Champions League spot to go with the automatic top three.
The news for Richard Scudamore and his money-mad bean counters is that we already have them - and this was one.
With vast amounts of money at stake, any projected end-of-season bonanza would, no doubt, end up like this, tight, tactical and a televisual turn-off.
The race for fourth tightened up considerably after this result, especially with Aston Villa and Spurs taking advantage - and with everyone nervously glancing over their shoulders at Everton's rapid progress up the table.
This was billed as the Battle for Fourth Place - and the winner was Spurs, who grabbed that placing with a 3-0 victory over Wigan while Villa, who romped home 5-2 against Burnley at Villa Park, showed they too are very much still in the mix.
What do you think? Have your say.

Err so Torres, Gerrard, Mascerano, Adebayor, etc dont have talent? A premier league team has progressed to the chamipons league final in the last 3 seasons and again I think will this time.
We are all getting spoilt me thinks.

In particular we have Fergie holding court in one of the weekend papers saying City, whatever else they have, "will never have 'Nitid's spirit", Oh yeah, Alex, is that right?, and how the bloody hell do you know?, got a crystal ball, can read the future can we???, that sort of spirit can be genrerated anywhere,it just depends on the chemistry and mix at a Club at a particular time in it's history, it's not unique to you you old fool, it never has, and never will be,...........................just say you don't know, and going off Saturday's performance, you have enough of your own things to worry about.

From the stands, that's the place real fans watch the match, not in front of the telly, this was an absorbing game with limited opportunities from each side, entertaining none the less.

This was far from being the worse game of this season. What we saw were two very evenly matched and very well organised sides contesting a very important game. Any knowledgable supporter if asked before the game would have tipped a tight game with few chances and even fewer goals. A draw or at best a win by the odd goal. So why be surprised when it turns out that way?
Two points dropped, but lots of positives for me, notably the excellence of Kompany and Lescott at the back. Last week I said on here that Toure should be dropped and that Kompany/Lescott would prove to be by far our best pairing from what we have available. A bigger test of that awaits on Wednesday, but I am much more comfortable with this pairing.
I thought the fact that we were so well organised and disciplined throughout was a big step forward, and if we take that same level of prganisation to Stamford Bridge then we have a real chance of coming away with something, hopefully in both league and cup!
Zab excellent and Bridge very good yesterday. No need to say anything about De Jong, just taken as read. Ade had a good game and Johnson had a good first half in particular with just a decent final ball lacking on occasions.
Special word for Shay Given of whom I have being critical of at times. A very quite game, but he did come out and punch one dangerous cross. Well done and duely noted.
Ireland looked lost at times, but I really do think he needs a run of games to get back to where he was last season, but not sure he will get them.
So all in all I am quite happy with what I saw. Liverpool are a very tough nut to crack, especially when they set out for a point and we have to be realistic and acknowledge that. The real missed opportunity was at Anfield when we caught them in the midst of their injury crisis and low on confidence. We had them on the rack but ended up shooting ourselves in the foot. That could not be said of yesterdays game.

Defensively we were very good. The addition of VK with Lescott at CB worked well and we looked far more comfortable at set pieces. Whilst both Bridge and Zaba had one of their better games.
Our midfield once again huffed and puffed but doesn't look to feature any further than the half way line. NDJ fought for everything but his distribution and attacking capability again left me scratching my head. He had a touch like a baby elephant, EVERY pass went either backwards or side ways. Oh and buy some new bloody studs, it'll stop you falling over in critical areas. Barry worked hard but another who hasn't got a scooby when required to attack. As for Ireland, I have been shouting for him to be included for weeks and to be fair he was garbage. Whilst he was played in no mans land and mostly out of position, I didn't see him try to make decent go at what was expected of him. Thought Johnson worked hard but lacked a realistic target or support at times. SWP lacked confidence at his running into brick walls showed it.
Playing Adebayor up front on his own, lumping balls at his head is frankly pointless and if we wanted to see that kind of football, it'd be cheaper to go and watch Darlington or Bury.
The problem lies with the coach / manager. We should NEVER be playing 4- 5 - 1 at home. Playing with one guy up front was criminal, negative and boring. Where was this "tactical " nouse ?? Any half decent tactician would have tried to change it rather than wait for a lucky break like Mancini and Benitez did yesterday. We played two wide men who have nothing cross to apart from Adebayor because Barry and De Jong are too busy standing on the half way line. None of our midfielders will shoot !!
Then to top it all off he brings another holding midfielder on to run around like a headless chicken for 15 minutes when we needed a goal.
Well Mr Manc, your dull, dour tactics have given Spurs, Villa and Everton something to look forward to. If it doesn't change City will be fighting for 7th with the bin dippers. Have a look at our players, the spark and confidence has all but disappeared. Another year of mediocrity. Difference being that now we have the money it'll be the whole of the country laughing at us and not just the rags over the road.
Get a grip Mancini and sort it out before that scarf gets too tight.

Referees et al are by far the worst sort of justice in a football game. Please bring on camera replays like in rugby!

For me, this was a highly entertaining game despite the lack of goal scoring opportunities and what I saw bodes well for City's future.
Kompany and Lescott have to be first choice for centre of defense from now on after that display.

You're probably better off not reporting on the game than using the PA report! A national can get away with it, but the MEN can't.
(The indy used the same PA crap for their match report at http://www.independent.co.uk/sport/football/premier-league/fourth-place-battle-turns-into-bore-draw-at-eastlands-1906408.html)
