The Blues were slow out of the blocks and found themselves two-down before Emmanuel Adebayor gave City hope of snatching a draw.
Mancini admitted his side were second best and says they must improve drastically if they are to beat Liverpool, Aston Villa and Everton to the prized fourth spot and place in the Champions League.
The City chief, who gave Patrick Vieira and Adam Johnson their debuts off the bench, said: "We didn't play very well.
"We know Hull at home is a different proposition, they played well.
"We started the game very, very slowly and there were things I didn't like because the pitch is the same whether we play at home or away.
"If we want to make the top four, we must win away and we must fight. We must be aggressive away, not like the first half."
Mancini also criticised the Hull fans who subjected Wayne Bridge to a series of personal chants at the KC Stadium.
The England left-back, who played his first match after two months out with a knee injury, has found himself in an unwanted media spotlight following the revelations about an alleged affair between former Chelsea team-mate John Terry and his ex-partner, which yesterday resulted in Terry being stripped of the England captaincy by coach Fabio Capello.
Terry was roundly booed during Chelsea's 1-1 draw with Hull at the KC on Tuesday and Bridge was also singled out by the home fans.
Mancini said: "I think sometimes we have to have respect for people. It was not good, in the first half, the people did not respect him."
The City coach, who refused to comment on Terry's demotion, added of Bridge's performance: "It was important he played and I hope in the next week he can improve. Wayne is an important player for us."

Our performance yesterday suggests too many of our team will never meet this important criteria...

Bobby Manc is slowly instilling that mental toughness but we should not assume teams like Hull will be easy games. Yesterday some our players came out the block as if they are strolling in Piccadilly garden. We will still get that 4th spot but more desire and mental toughness are required.

Our wage bill is far higher than almost every other club in world football....sadly most of the players are only here for the cash and are not prepared to put in a 'shift'
We will never be more than a 5th place team......

Agree that we looked a different side when Vieira and Johnson came on. Clearly Barry and Ireland is totally our of form. Boyata looked very nervous, which you could expect from a 19 year I suppose. Drop SI and GB until back in form, Boyota needs confidence and games if he;s to develop so a bit more difficult to drop until Kompany and/or Lescott is back.
Still think we will manage 4th (at least). No need to worry, it's far to much of that going on against us City fans. So relax and keep faith fellas!

1) Robinho's wages are still being paid by the club . Santos only cough up £20,000 a week
2) Benjani wages are being paid by the club 100%.... his knee is so badly damaged that he failed 2 medicals.
Lets have the truth about the other players out on loan - Jo, Caicedo, Bojinov, Hart?

In which case, they'd be stuck out there in the freezing cold in the middle of the night in a blacked-out stadium. It's impossible to give 110%!
But I know what you mean.

So be happy with where we are and realise it can and will be better,if hughes had still been here we would be lower in the league thats for sure.
